When they're live they set up a looper and set in extra sounds where needed. Everything is done in front of the audience. Home Free always up front nothing hidden no cheating

They record the sounds on a loop, Adam does a demonstration of this at the concerts.

I don't mind when the guys add another layer or extras in post production. And you don't necessarily miss anything when you see them live since they started incorporating the looper into their shows. The guys will sing some vocals, record them and loop them when they sing the main vocals. It's still them singing every part. Just my humble opinion. Thanks Chris - always a great reaction. 🖤🍟

You don't miss all the parts live, because they you use a looper-right in front of the whole audience- to record those extra parts. 😊 Hopefully you'll get the chance to see them live when they do it!

I don’t consider it cheating if it’s still their own voices they’re filling in. They do use loopers more in live shows so the audience can enjoy more of the vocal elements (where they deem necessary. Not all songs use the looper). This is definitely playlist worthy! A definite new favorite classic from Home Free! Austin was doing the bell tones. It was a little more obvious on the first run of those. I think you think it sounds slightly country because of Austin’s Southern accent. ☺️The man is from South Georgia. His high tenor voice will be missed as he’s departing Home Free some time in the Fall this year to spend more time at home working on his solo projects and be with his wife and start a family in the future. He’ll still record/collaborate with Home Free from time to time. He and the rest of the guys are a brotherhood and really enjoyed hanging out.

I don’t mind the extra layering for the recorded version, hearing them live dispels any concerns it’s all them and it’s amazing - the best vocals and so entertaining. This is definitely in my Top 5 #HomeFree songs. Loved it!!! Thx Larry! They’ve got lots of new(ish) music in the past few months that you’ve got to catch up on! 😊

The doorbell sound is called bell tones, and they sound so good. This was done in the studio where they put in their parts separately and the production happens, but together In concert when a lot is going on in some of the songs, the repetitive parts they do use a looper for, but they put the vocals into it in front of the audience at the beginning of the song or during the performance of the song. Adam the beatboxer controls it. So it can be done on stage, and many acapella groups do this now. It is still all vocals, and they do not do this in most of their songs, but they need to be able to loop onstage because it frees them up to be able to do other parts in tandem. This is the progression of acapella now, groups have to advance to keep up with the competition and stay relevant. The history of acapella started out like a barbershop quartet, 4 guys, (and many people still think of this when they hear the words acapella group) then a group added a beatboxer into the mix and changed it up right? It's a progression over the years. I've been to many of their concerts and The live versions on stage sound exactly like the song video. They sing so tight-knit and clean, it's incredible really and yes it's still acapella.

Love this great classic song from Ben E. King back in 1961. The Home Free guys did an awesome version as always. Love their arrangement on this cover. Great vocal leads by Austin & Rob. Tim's bass really stands out for me in this one. And Adam's tasteful vocal percussion is on point.

As others have said, they use a looper during their concerts to lay down some of the repetitive parts. They are very open about it and create the looping sounds in the “here and now.” The guys are phenomenal live and they do everything with vocals (except finger snaps, clapping, foot stomping, etc.).

Look again more carefully and you will see Austin making those dodo sounds 🙂 BUT. When they do use a looper for some sounds, it is not cheating because it is their own voices. The show I went to, they actually sat there making the sounds with Adam adding them to the looper before they sang the whole song.

Home Free loves having the best of two worlds. Live vs studio recorded, and why shouldn't they? They are two different things, two different experiences, two different intentions. There is nothing lacking in their live concerts, they sound amazing, and as many has mentioned, in the recent years they are using a live looper for a few songs. Why? Because they want to, because Adam loves playing with it, and because they can. But only in a few songs. Studio recordings is a different playground, where they don't have to have the timing in the exact same way, where they can stretch their talents to other places, where they can layer and mix and adjust to create a unique sound, just like any other artist does. They are open about it. There is no cheating. It's all still their voices doing all the sounds, even though they are occassionally enhanced or somewhat tweaked sometimes. It's still all them. It takes absolutely nothing away from their live shows. In fact. Personally it's why I love their studio recorded music. If I want the live sound I wait until I go to a live show, which is not too often living in Europe but then I catch several on the same tour. They've said that they love getting to play around with it for the studio recordings, and I think that it's one of the reasons why they constantly evolve live too. I've been to 20 concerts so far and have no plan to quit now, even though I will miss Austin enourmasly, and there is a reason why so many of us go to so many concerts. It's because the live experience is amazing. Some people just have to learn to separate the intentions of live vs studio recorded.

Adam (beatboxer) was doing the water droplet sound. He’s inventive like that and will use a looper live to do sounds like that. When they do Man of Constant Sorrow in concert they let Chance do the mouth harp sound (sounds like a didgeridoo) into the looper as it hurts his voice to do it too long. Still his voice. Just so you know how it’s done. Love this and loved the bell tones (the do, do, do sounds). Love those harmonies.

I see most of the comments are talking about using the looper - that is a relatively new item in the Home Free concert arsenal. Home Free has been doing live shows since 2001 without a looper. But it limited what songs that they had recorded that they could do on stage. I think the popularity of Man of Constant Sorrow and a couple other many-track songs finally pushed them to bring it on.
Home Free has been layering on their recorded offerings since the the Sing Off. You usually don't notice it because it blends in so well, and it is sort of rare, but if you really listen to some songs you can tell that there are more than 4 (or 5) voices at times. In fact, you don't really need to listen hard - Understand has at least 5 vocal lines in places in addition to Adam; and people with better ears than I have said that O Holy Night has 'extra' voices. It is one reason that they never did some of their recorded songs live - it wouldn't work. We are quite used to Adam layering various sound tracks - his 'drums' and other effects. But Darren has never been afraid to use extra layers of the guys voices to beef up the sound. It isn't necessary in a live show, but adding the looper has allowed them to do some songs that really DO need the extra parts - like Man of Constant Sorrow. But if it doesn't need the extra layers, they don't use it. Personally, I prefer the songs that don't need the looper, but that is the songs themselves, not the fact of the looper.

Always here for your HF reactions, Chris. Appreciate your observations. Can't help but sway and sing along with this one. The guys switch things up, layer in their unique way, to keep the basic melody and lyrics from what could be rather uninteresting.
BTW, Austin (tenor, in the middle) is leaving the group later this year. He posted, and did a live chat, explaining his decision after it was announced. (In general, the 'nesting' thing...he got married last year, wants to be home, start a family). Beatboxer Adam grows his hair out for kids' wigs. He just posted, within the last day or so, to say he'd just donated for the third time. ❤

One of the songs I have been listening to for as long as I can remember. First the LP, later I always had it on one of my cassette tapes, then I got the CD and in recent years I usually have it on one of my playlists. Although many versions had been released in the meantime, it was usually the version by Ben E. King or Otis Redding. But from now on it is the version of Home Free that is on my playlist and no other.😊💖 Alternating the lead between Austin's powerful voice and Rob's silky soulful voice just sounds so beautiful and fantastic. Then the unparalleled vocal percussion, truly phenomenal. The great bass and beautiful harmony are the finishing touch.❤

Actually you are asking the wrong question. The question isn't "Is it still a capella?", it is "it is still a quintet?" And the answer is "yes" and "no". Yes, it is still the same 5 guys making all the sounds (so definitely a capella), but there may be more than 5 voices, so 'no'. Is adding ad libs or extra bass lines, or doubling Rob/Chance/Austin for harmony while singing the lead mean they are cheating? No, it means they are giving their fans a wonderfully full musical experience. We know they can knock your sox off on stag, so what is the big deal if they pad their recordings?

I saw these guys last December. Rupp is a master at using a looper and blending multiple layers (all recorded at the time) into their mix of their live performances. Though they didn't perform this particular song during that concert, I would imagine Adam would record his drum beat and loop it so that he could sing the top end bg part when it was time (which is a typical part that he sings when he does sing). Regardless, outstanding work by these guys, whether layered in post, or looped live! I resist calling it "cheating" hahaha Thanks, Larry!!
