INTRUDER ALERT! Our Boat Was Broken Into!!! (PSA: Reaching 911 When You're Not Local)

  • Last week, our boat was broken into while in storage.
We're currently nearly a 1000 miles away from the boat, traveling by van and staying with family in the St. Louis area when we got motion alerts on our Blink cameras we left behind.
We were startled to find it wasn't the yard cat that frequently pops on camera, or the wind - we had an ACTUAL intruder looking to break in!
But what we weren't prepared for was how difficult it would be to reach the police department local to our boat late at night.
In this video, we share what learned - and how YOU can be better prepared to reach authorities where you might have loved ones or property you're monitoring.

Cherie and Chris, I am so sorry that this happened to you. I am glad this guy was apprehended. More importantly, we do travel quite a bit with our van, and we leave my 86 year mom alone at our home. We have cameras around the house just for this reason, but I never thought about 911 not working just as I expect. I will now look into it. THANK YOU for this good info.- Your fan

TFS Wow That was not expected for sure. Bet your glad you installed the remote monitoring cameras and security system on Y-not. Glad they caught the guy. And, hope the boat wasn't damaged very bad. That's not something I would have thought about either. I hope the yard will take care of securing the boat and you don't have to head back.

Ring is closely related to the Blink we have - they are both owned by Amazon. Blink does not have a monthly fee, and overall gives me a better privacy vibe from my preliminary research.

First, my condolences for being burglarized. :-( Thank goodness you weren't inside the boat as it could have gotten ugly, and thank goodness the burglar left with just some opened liquor and perhaps minor camera damage.
Second, thanks for caring enough to use this as an opportunity to educate your followers on some important security considerations at this troubling time. - Thinking of your audience at a time like this is just one of the reasons your channel is so great.
Third, I'm glad the perp was caught. Hopefully he will learn his lesson and change his ways.

We also received an intruder alert our problem wound up being that I called the city and our RV was in the county and therefore the county law enforcement handled the call. I know now and no matter where we are I find out the agency that handles these calls. Since our alert came in the afternoon I had not thought about after hours being handled differently. All 911 calls can be routed to any other 911 location. Just know the name and location of the Agency you are trying to reach. When your local 911 answers, simply state “I need a 911 transfer to (Agency and location) for Burglary in process in that jurisdiction (or whatever the need).” Most of the time the operator will transfer you without too much difficulty.

Great tips!! From one old dispatcher. Calling 9-11 where you are can help you get to the location you might need, but it could take them some time to find it also. There isn't a "magic" directory for the country. Better to do your homework and be prepared ahead of time.

This topic triggers me, I hate thieves. We had our boat broken into while out on a mooring ball, we were ashore eating dinner out in public and when we returned our door was cut open around the lock and they stole some stuff, but thankfully most of our valuables are not left out in the opening and stored in difficult to get to areas on the boat. They stole my laptop, some jewelry, our pride. They did cut up some of the wirings under the control panel attempting to bypass the ignition to attempt to steal the boat, but thankfully I had the fuel line manually shut off and they couldn't keep the engine running.

Think hierarchal...local police...county police...state police. You should find a live body with intimate knowledge at one of those numbers on how to contact dispatch for the responsible organization. Ran into this for much the same reason a couple of years ago. I ended up calling the state police number, and within 10 seconds of telling the operator, I had local dispatch on the line.

Another option for people who have something in storage (either an RV or just those storage spaces), see if your storage space has a security company. If they do, then get that number. Private security will frequently get there faster, or if they call 911, the police will arrive faster.

Unfortunately I gave your video a thumbs down anytime you call 911 and tell them the town of the issue they automatically connect you to that town I never heard of a 911 operator not knowing where to direct your emergency never when I was up north someone broke into my boat my phone went off I called 911 in New York they immediately connected me to Indialantic Police Department so I don’t know why you wasted your time going on the Internet when all you had to do is get the proper 911 operator to direct you to what town your boat was being robbed.

Actually.. that's not true across the country, especially since things changed to e911. We've been talking with a lot people 'in the know' since this incidence and video came out - and very few departments subscribe to the PSAP directory to be able to have that information at the ready. Be prepared for when you're not in such an area when something happens.

And now we know the Achilles heel of the 911 system, and voice mail for police departments. As far as I know every phone number, 911, 800 numbers, etc. ring to a 10 digit local phone number. Seems to me that every ten digit number that a 911 number rings to should be published, just for situations like yours. But of course the government won't do this "for our protection"!
