I'm a Vanderbilt fan. Vandy is the only private school in the conference and it's the smallest by number of undergraduate students enrolled. It was founded shortly after the United States civil War. The Vanderbilt family of New York wanted to help rebuild the south after the War and decided to build a university in Nashville with their own funds. The school's sports nickname is The Commodores after Cornelius Vanderbilt who was an American business magnate who made a fortune in railroads and shipping. His nickname was The Commodore.
The other schools in the SEC are all at least three times larger in student population than Vanderbilt and are supported by state, not private funding.Vandy gets no state funding.
Vandy is a founding member of the SEC which is probably why they let us stick around. For the first three decades of the conference Vanderbilt was competitive in football but they have not been consistent for a long time. They have a few seasons where they have made it to bowl games in recent years, but it's not often. We are better known for our men's and women's basketball teams and for our baseball team which has won several national championships.
Admission to Vanderbilt generally requires a higher GPA then most so recruiting athletes draws from a smaller pool of people than most of the schools in the conference.. Vanderbilt is a also known for its post-grad law and medical schools and the huge Vanderbilt Medical center and children's hospital here in Nashville.
We Vandy fans are a tough lot We're used to losing more than we win when it comes to football!
As much as I love our Tennessee Titans NFL team which is based in Nashville, bringing the Titans to town hurt the attendance at Vandy football games. It used to be that people who were football fans in general would come to watch Vanderbilt play in the SEC because the opposing teams usually have many future NFL stars. . But since the Titans came it's just die-hard Vandy fans and of course those who live in Nashville but support the opposing team's, who attend games. Then there's those like me who are just older and it's harder for me to get to the games so they're on television now there's pretty much coverage of every major conferences teams every week.
The football stadium is being renovated and updates are expected to be completed by the 2024 season they will be adding some seats to the open end zone but it will still be the smallest in the conference.

the reason college stadiums are so unique with the seat in the Endzone is due to the history of the stadiums. Most of these stadiums were built 100 years ago and the capacity was less. Therefore they only built seats on the sides in alot of cases because it gave better views. But with time and population growth and more fans they had to add seats and expand the stadiums so they would add seats to one of the endzones, then another tier of seats on the side, then maybe seats in the other endzone etc. This is why there are so many stadiums with weird asymmetrical designs or stadiums where one of the endzones is grass or smaller while the other side is full. Also the introduction of the big screens for replays and stats is pretty recent and created a "arms race" so to speak about 20 years ago where teams would add the new "biggest screen in football" and then a year later another team would add a screen just a little bit bigger and so on as they competed for bragging rights. The same goes for stadium size as University of Michigan (Big 10), Ohio State (Big 10), Tennessee (SEC) and Texas A&M (used to be Big 12, now SEC) compete with each other for the "biggest stadium".

Good comment. I’d just add that a school doesn’t want to overbuild capacity beyond what they can regularly fill, because lots of empty seats create a negative perception on TV, and degrade the game day experience, along with being unnecessarily expensive to build.
For example, the Vanderbilt stadium holds about 40k fans. Their average home game in 2021 was about 23.5k.
Imagine how empty it would look if they built-out their stadium even more with seating in the other end zone.

10:38 Great comment! Also, to answer this particular question, the age of a lot of these stadiums has a lot to do with why they have such a wide bowl shape. In the early-mid 1900s, making massive enclosed stadiums wasn’t really possible, simply because of construction limitations. It’s only been in the last several decades that construction of more vertical open air (or entirely enclosed) stadiums have been a thing. You can see that in a lot these stadiums. The sections nearest the field are the oldest and will be the most bowl like. The steeper, more vertical sections have been added on over the decades, leading to a lot of these stadiums taking on that asymmetrical look.

The interviewer was speaking into the radio, and the crowd noise was so loud, you could barley hear what was being said over the radio, despite the helmet being held up against a boom mic. If it's so loud you can't hear the radio that is 5 yards away, imagine how hard it is on field for the QB to accurately get the play over the radio.

There is no morgue under the field at Neyland stadium lol. However there is an area on the other side of the river called the body farm. The aim is to gain a better understanding of the decomposition process, permitting the development of techniques for extracting information such as the timing and circumstances of death from human remains. Body farm research is of particular interest in forensic anthropology and related disciplines, and has applications in the fields of law enforcement and forensic science. By placing the bodies outside to face the elements, researchers are able to get a better understanding of the decomposition process.

Bleachers: The open seating area in baseball was called the "bleaching boards" as early as 1877. The term "bleachers" used in the sense of benches for spectators can be traced back to at least 1889; named as such because the generally uncovered wooden boards were "bleached by the sun" - wiki.

One thing that explains how many college stadiums look, including the incongruent seating, is typically they’ve been in place for 100 years, and have been revised and expanded over the decades (Unlike modern NFL stadiums that are newly built and will never be expanded, but rather will just be abandoned and replaced within 30 years). My SEC team is Arkansas; as a kid in the 1970s it seated 44,000. Now it’s been substantially modified and seats 76,000 and has a far bigger fancier box section.
The previous lack of seating in one end zone was because there was a training facility there instead. Not sure about now but in the past it had artificial Astroturf on the field, continuing past the end zone into that training facility. This made it the longest stretch of Astroturf in the world.

The University of Tennessee does have a morgue beneath the stadium. The university is known for studying the decay of corpses to help police in homicide investigations. They also have a “cadaver farm” on campus where they study decaying corpses over the course of years to see how many insect generations grow at what stages of decay. It may sound morbid but it’s important to defining time lines in homicides where bodies aren’t found immediately. That’s actually the sort stuff universities should be doing.

The newest ones are architectural marvels, much more high tech and fancy than college stadiums, although seating fewer than the biggest college stadiums. Whereas college stadiums organically grow in stages over the decades and look far different than they did 70 years ago, NFL stadiums are designed from the ground up to be a finished product, will never be expanded, and will be abandoned and replaced in 25 or 30 years. It has views on the shore of Lake Washington and the Cascade Mountain Range all along the east, Puget Sound and the Olympic Mountains toward the west, and the Seattle skyline and the 14,411 ft (4,392 m) volcanic peak of Mt. Rainier to the south. To the north you might catch more volcanic mountains such as Glacier Peak and Mt. Baker. Husky stadium is also 1 of 3 collegiate stadiums where fans can arrive by boat but it is the only one by yacht. It is also the 3rd loudest stadium in the world and has a long tradition to being the loudest in collegiate football. D/N I’d like to see you react to team mascots and team names. We have a lot of weird names like Hoosiers, Cornhuskers, Sooners, Hokies, Aggies, Native American names like the Illini and Seminoles, the Horned Frogs, Commodores, Gamecocks, Tarheels, Nittany Lions, Sun Devils, Ducks, and Volunteers.
We also have some teams with two names like the Auburn Tigers also called the War Eagles, and the Virginia Tech Hokies are also called the Gobblers.
The history of living animal mascots is rich from Mike the Tiger at LSU, to Handsome Dan and Uga the bulldogs at Yale and Georgia, to Albert the Gator at Florida, to Reveille the Collie at Texas A&M, to Ralphie the Buffalo at Colorado University. These mascots are beloved by the fans and are always present at the games. Uga has an air conditioned dog house and only his progeny are allowed to be the mascot at Georgia. He is perhaps the best known and recently he snapped at Bevo the actual Texas Longhorn cow.

The University of Tennessee's Anthropology Department is located in the building that serves as the South end's foundation. Within the department is one of the world's largest collection of bones, with literally thousands of human skeletons. UT's infamous "Body Farm" is not underneath the stadium. That is actually across the river. If you want to read about a true pioneer of an entire academic field of study, you should check out Dr. Bass, founder of the body farm at UT. He basically trained half of the nation's forensic scientists on how to conduct crime scene investigations to determine time and cause of death.

These videos never seems to mention the more interesting part of tiger stadium, how it was built. Tiger stadium (LSU's stadium) took a lot of political effort to build. The only way that H. P. Long was able to secure funding to build it was by building students dorms... dorms that just so happened to have a field between them and seating built on the tops of the buildings. Then they started building more sections from there, hence why all the sections look so different.
You can look up pictures online to see what the dorms look like now underneath the stadium. They were condemned in the early 2000s so students no longer live in them, but at least when I was there students would sneak in all the time to explore.

At Ohio State, I know they used a horseshoe design because there used to be a track around the field and temporary stands would be pulled out for longer straight sections. Since then, they ditched the track, dug out the field and lowered it, brought seating right up to the field and filled in the open end.

The University of Kentucky Wildcats are more known for their basketball program and it's history. In basketball, they are considered one of the "blue bloods"(cream of the crop, historically), just like the "blue bloods" of college football are usually seen as Alabama, Ohio State, Michigan, Oklahoma, Nebraska, Texas, Notre Dame and USC(Southern California). The Kentucky football program is middling at best. You will not see them in a bunch of football highlights videos.

One for the Fans, who pay full ticket prices and get bucket seating, etc. The other is for the students, who usually get a break on the ticket price (possibly not, if the team is #3 in the country, that season...), and get plain bench seating.

Based on videos you reacted too yea Wildcats are basically a fill in school for the conference. They use to be a basketball school. LSU stadium when he says it looks like multiple stadiums were put together. Basically they just kept adding on some original parts still stand and it’s a work of art in person. Originaly it was just a grandstand on the home side and they kept expanding and the stadium had dorms as well. That’s what all those windows are abandoned dorms from decades ago.

When you see some grass for seating in the endzone, it is for student seating. Usually, they can attend a game at no charge by showing their student ID, but their seating is in the grass. They don't care. It's a free celebration and a party on Saturday afternoon, and the rowdiest section of the stadium supports their school. It does upset me that many of these schools are now filling these sections with seats where they will make money, and the student sections are becoming smaller - or students have to pay to attend their school's football game. I don't think it's right.
Also, the stadium's architecture is usually the same as the architecture of the buildings on campus. That is one of the only problems I have with this video you responded to. He states he doesn't like the building style, but it completely matches the historic architecture of each building at each school - which it should. The campus (or grounds in some cases) should be cohesive in its architectural style.
He also takes photos from Google Earth, which doesn't show the stadiums during football season. The perfect example is the University of Tennessee. The first photo he showed was during the off-season when work was probably being renovated, and the field painting wasn't showing. Tennessee is infamous for its checkerboard painting in the endzone. Every field looks different during the off-season than during the actual football season.
All of the stadiums, no matter the conference, are stunning in their own way.

  • @KevinQuinn81
    @KevinQuinn81 Рік тому +3

Kentucky is more famous for its basketball than its football. The football team has produced some memorable upsets and some decent players and coaches but they haven't won much. The basketball team however has won many conference and national championships and produced some of the most famous names in basketball.
Also, Kyle Field at Texas A&M hasn't shown up in many of the videos I've seen you watch but it has an INSANE atmosphere with some cool, quirky traditions. Also, it has a structural history akin to Old Trafford where it started as just a small set of bleachers then they built a 3/4 bowl, then they just kept building up and building up and renovating it to the point it is today.
Bleachers are, in fact, solid benches with no chair backs.
The University of Tennessee has a famous forensic sciences department that uses, yes, a morgue under the stadium, and also a forest near campus to study how human bodies decay in different conditions.
Sometimes, the empty ends is due to these stadiums being inside cramped cities or small campuses (see Georgia's stadium) and they either can't fit more (like in Georgia's case) or they need to use that space for academic or athletic facilities that also need the room. That's why there are often whole buildings in those ends when that is the case.
Find a video on tailgating in the US. That'll be entertaining enough on its own, and explain why crowds can be so nuts (beer, it's beer). But then find a video on Ole Miss tailgating (still beer) but just in the woods with what you might call southern charm.
Those South Carolina things are just flood light gantries.
Pro stadiums, while many have AMAZING architecture, are often a little more soulless for atmosphere because it costs more to go to games and they draw fans from all over the world. It's like how the fans of some bigger Premier League teams have complained about the atmospheres of their stadiums lacking in recent years (The Emirates, Stamford Bridge, Old Trafford).

I went to most of the home games for the last few years at the University of Texas and it’s a great atmosphere. Pre-game, there are lots of booths and carnival games around the stadium. Attendance is anywhere from about 90,000-100,000. The rough thing is those 11am games where you’re out there for 4 hours in the Texas heat. And the thing is, as much as I love the longhorns, there’s plenty of other schools out there that have game day atmospheres that are even better.
