  • Hamilton is a legendary Broadway Musical. Leslie Odom Jr and Lin-Manuel Miranda outdid himself with these songs and as Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr! In my ""Cabinet Battle 2" & "Washington On Your Side" (From "Hamilton)" reaction I listen to MORE of possibly my new FAVORITE Broadway musical!
I'm a Hamilton noob reacting to ""Cabinet Battle 2" & "Washington On Your Side" (From "Hamilton)"! Listen to ""Cabinet Battle 2" & "Washington On Your Side" on UA-cam here:

Hamilton: An American Musical is a sung-and-rapped-through musical by Lin-Manuel Miranda. It tells the story of American Founding Father Alexander Hamilton. Miranda said he was inspired to write the musical after reading the 2004 biography Alexander Hamilton by Ron Chernow.
The show draws heavily from hip hop, as well as R&B, pop, soul, and traditional-style show tunes. It casts non-white actors as the Founding Fathers and other historical figures. Miranda described Hamilton as about "America then, as told by America now."
It's my first time listening to Hamilton and my first time listening to ""Cabinet Battle 2" & "Washington On Your Side".

So in cabinet battle 2, Hamilton says "Lafayette's a smart man he'll be fine." NO HE WAS NOT. He was mostly in a jail cell, I laugh at that line every single time I hear it. Jefferson and Madison are the people who irritate Hamilton to be who he is in act 2. And Lafayette and Mulligan are also the people who make sure that Hamilton is who he is in act 1. Odd parallel.

The thing about Hamilton was that he was brilliant man but as Burr says he couldn't just shut his mouth. He would talk for hours which annoyed everyone cause when Hamilton had an idea he just said it without thinking it through first. The man literally suggested that positions of Goverment should be handed down in the family. Like if the father died then his son would automatically be appointed the position.
Imagine saying that to a group of people who just fought a war to break away from a king? That's insane!
Everyone knew Hamilton was smart but didn't like him because he couldn't see his own flaws.

As someone who grew up between VA and SC (the most influential southern states during the time), saying someone is “New Money” was one of the biggest disses you could say to them. Basically calling him an outsider who can’t be trusted.

    • @IONATVS
      @IONATVS 2 роки тому +2

The difference is Jefferson comes from an OLD money background, and Old Money/Patrician and New Money/Bourgeois have a long history of distrust. Basically New Money sees Old Money as Classist layabouts who did nothing to earn their wealth and just want to keep them down, while Old Money sees New Money as tryhard scammers constantly trying to impress everyone with tacky wallet-measuring contests. And to be fair, they’re both right.

Jefferson is in a more understated brown version of the costume in the off-broadway production. It was changed to Magenta because Diggs' Jefferson was reminding people of Prince so they put him in purple. Magenta just happened to be opposite to green on the color wheel so it worked. Also while Jefferson presented himself in a 'look at me I don't care what people think so I'll answer the front door of the White House in pajamas and slippers way', he loved everything he considered high class in foods, French fashion, wines, books, architectural, design etc. There is always two sides to Jefferson.

Hamilton doesn't have to back down because he knows that Washington's mind was already made up to stay out of France. The meeting here is perfunctory so that Jefferson can't claim that his concerns were unheard. But he can complain later (which he did, but not in the play) that he was kinda railroaded.

Alexander Hamilton in real life was a bit on the shorter size for men of the time (aprox 5’7”) with apparently a lighter build especially in his prime years. He was considered very attractive with a handsome face with blue eyes, he also had reddish-brown hair. He was said to be very enthusiastic and rather social when around people with a jolly personality. Though I don’t doubt he would be a fierce man at times when needed.

I can see the parallels between Burr and Madison. There is also the fact that both of them were at one point people who Hamilton seemed to consider to be allies. All of act 1, he seems to be at least friendly with Burr between his wedding and even the section of Non-Stop where he tries to get Burr to help with defending the constitution. When that fails, he presumably goes to Madison for help with the Federalist Papers as Madison is known to have written 29 of them. By this point both of them don’t like Hamilton because of his policies/jealousy on Burr’s part which will come to even more of a head between now and the end of the show.

The coolest part about the hardest bar in Washington on your side is that it’s one of the last lines written! Coincidentally I just watched an old interview where Daveed Diggs said Lin realized there wasn’t a show off moment for him in act 2 like he had during Guns and ships. So Lin added the line when the show was already in previews. Also, Daveed said it was his favorite bar to perform every night. It’s really fun to get right

LMM has said in interviews that the most glorious 16 bars he every wrote was actually for Hamilton which he cut during workshops so everyone would know that if he cut his own verses that it any of theirs were cut for the betterment on the show. However, I agree that "Washington on your Side" does have some of the best stand out writing/lyrics of the show. The bars cut were during the Adams Administration but don't give away anything (other than the fact that Hamilton doesn't respect John Adams even though they are in the same party):

I'm just gonna point out that when they're debating giving France aid, the French rebels seemed pretty intent on having Lafayette's head in a basket too. He had outright fled France, and tried to return to the US, only to get imprisoned and shuffled around Europe. The Americans tried to help as best they could, but they hadn't set up diplomatic relations with much of Europe yet, so it took a while for progress to be made.

    • @emilylewis5373

And as its pointed out, its hard to give aid when you don't know who is leading the country and the people are rioting in the streets. The cabinet meeting this song refers to took place in janurary of 1793, a few months earlier in September of 1992, a mob killed around 1,200 prisoners (most of whom were priests in five days).

A bit of Back History on Lafayette, he was for freedom but he actually didn't want to completely overthrow the monarchy, he was hoping to change the government to be one of a constitutional monarchy like what they have in Great Britain and for the first few years of the French revolution he was one of the most powerful men in France, but things went south when the people decided to overthrow the monarchy all together and labeled him a monarchist . He ended up getting captured in what is Present day Belgium and his wife and daughters joined him in prison, but his oldest Son made his way to the Americas and stayed with the Hamilton's for a while. Sadly Hamilton and Lafayette never met again in person but Hamilton had said in a letter to Lafayette that their friendship would “survive all revolutions and all vicissitudes.”

With Peggy, it is her sisters trying to get her to break the rules and her restrictions as a Schuyler sister which the other two talk about a lot. Although her sisters mean well, she is being dragged around and dismissed. With Mariah, she is being used by her abusive husband for money and Hamilton for company. Hamilton's dismissal, that Lafayette is a smart man and he'll be fine, makes me smirk every time. As a French Revolution and Napoleonic Era fangirl, I can tell you flat out, the one thing that unites everyone in 1790s France is that _none_ of them have anything nice to say about Lafayette; he almost got the chop multiple times for being too moderate and loyal to the Crown, and the rest of the aristocracy saw him as a traitor for siding too much with the revolutionaries. I consider it sheer good luck on his part that he didn't die during the Terror. His grave in France is guarded by US Marines, because his adoped country loves him more than the country of his birth ever will.
(Fun fact though, he holds not just dual citizenship in France and the US, but double US citizenship, because he became a naturalized citizen while he was alive and then was granted a second honourary citizenship by Congress in 2002. He's 100% French and 200% American.
Additional fun fact: he named his son after Washington. The poor kid was stuck with the handle Georges Washington Louis Gilbert du Motier de Lafayette.)

Oh man! I’ve been watching your videos and had no idea where you were from….until my sister went to a minor league baseball game today and posted videos of my nephew on the field with a blow up guitar in some contest. AND WHAT DO YOU KNOW…there you are with your Mohawk. Crazy small world.

"He's really accumulating a lot of enemies at this point, and it's kind of surprising." This is a man who got himself shot that you're talking about. I'm honestly shocked he had anybody that called him a friend before his death, as he seems to be the type of person that views people as disposable, only keeping them until they do something for themselves for once instead of only focusing on him. I mean, in Act Two, "Cabinet Battle 2" is the only time where Lafayette's name is brought up, and there's no mention of Hercules Mulligan. I exclude John Laurens solely because he was more than a friend.

My only criticism of the musical is its portrayal of Wasington and Jefferson as angels and good men when they both owned huge amounts of slaves and tortured them, other than that the musical is so so good

    • @StoryMing

Jefferson is not shown here as an angel, maybe not as flawed as he was in reality, but he's one of the main antagonists.

    ⚠️!!!!SPOILER!!!!⚠️
I have no idea if your up to some of this, so I'm putting a spoiler warning!
The bullet was the first to die. She was killed for suspected espionage right after you'll be back. She then becomes the omen of death. At the beginning of 'Stay Alive' she carries the bullet that narrowly misses Hamilton. In YorkTown she is the one that helps Laurens kill the redcoat, shakes his hand, then (spoiler, idk if you're up to this) he is next to die.
!!!!DEFINITE NOT UP TOO THIS, CONTINUE AT OWN COST!!!!
During 'Blow Us All Away' (Are we up to this song yet? I can't remember)she is the one to tell Philip (have we met Philip yet?) where to find George Eacker, (And flirts with him! Philip is literally flirting with death!) and then Philip is next to go bye. During the final battle, she again catches a bullet (fired by Burr), and if you watch her, she gets closer and closer to Hamilton while he is doing his soliloquy until Eliza gets on stage. At this point the Bullet is stopped by other members of the ensemble, the time freeze is abandoned, and we all know what happens next.
    Sorry for the spoiler :)

As a non native speaker, this line is also ond of the hardest, even harder than guns and ships as a whole. The whole musical was hard to learn, but goddamn I had so much trouble trying to keep up with Daveed Diggs. I love it and always will.

Very late comment, but that Jefferson line in Washington On Your Side. That section was written AFTER the musical was done. Lin last second realized he didn't have a standout moment for Jefferson so he added those 4 bars and rearranged who sang which part then officially finalized the product

I'm gona combine two of my comments from your previous videos here, just in hopes it might catch your eyes :3
It's only a tiny bit away, but their is a cut song between the songs "Rainolds Pamphlet" and "Burn". It's called "Congratulations" and is REALLY good. It's sung by Angelica.
Just thought I'd pitch that to you, in case you want to include it in the reaction or use it for a Hamilton Bonus Day! (Also, the animatics for "Congratulations" are awesome.)
There is also an alternate version of "Schuylor Defeated" that got cut, as well as another cut song called "Dear Theodosia: reprise".
The original version of Schuylor Defeated has some more lines between Eliza and Philip, as well as an extra interaction between Eliza and Burr. It also gives information that leads into the other cut song, Dear Theodosia: reprise, which itselfe gives context for a verry important line and Burrs actions close to the end of the musical. (There is a great animatic of the original "Schuylot Defeated" that got made by MushiiR, and uploaded by Hamilton Trash. There are also great animatics for "Dear Theodosia: Reprise".) Those two might be something nice for a Hamilton Bonus Day! ^^

I always find it funny, that in Cabinet Battle 1, where the topic is financial stuff, Hamilton´s secretary subject, he loses. And now in Cabinet Battle 2, which is about State affairs, so Jefferson´s field, he loses. WHY ARE THEY FAILING IN THEIR OWN TOPICS xD

Awesome videos so far, One of my favourite things about this song, is have you noticed that Jefferson won't turn his back to Burr unless Madison is around? Then starts manipulating Burr, you can tell because he does the Marionette Dance behind Burr, similar to what Burr is doing in the "Room Where it Happens", he points Burr to Madison to "make sure he knows the plan, so Jefferson isn't involved." Burr got played by Jefferson in this song, I think.
