Sociopath vs Psychopath - What's The Difference?
Вставка

- What's the difference between a sociopath and a psychopath? How does a psychopath compare to a sociopath?
Do you have an exalted sense of self? Are you a compulsive liar? Would you do just about anything to get you want? If you answered “yes” to all of these questions, you might want to consult a professional who can determine if you are a sociopath or a psychopath. Both sociopaths and psychopaths share three common traits suggested by the questions above - conceitedness, deceitfulness, and manipulation largely unchecked by moral conscience. Some experts think sociopathy and psychopathy are the same and group them together under the diagnostic term antisocial personality disorder or APD, while others argue that there are significant differences between the two mental disorders. We will examine some of these differences in this episode of The Infographics Show, “Sociopath vs. Psychopath.”

The Barnum effect is a phenomenon that triggers false positives when individuals give high accuracy ratings to descriptions of their personality that supposedly are tailored specifically to them, but are in fact vague and general enough to apply to a wide range of people (common when reading horoscopes, aura reading, fortune telling and even some personality tests). Have you experienced it yourselves after watching this video? Let me know...

I am a sociopath, and honesyly little of what was listed was actually told to me at the psychologists office, we rarely pose a threat to people and a lot of sociopaths dont move around steal, lie. They are just people having a hard time understanding and sometimes identifying emotions. Though there are few that give sociopaths a bad name. Ive met a psychopath before and he was arrested in the end but when i had met him he was nothing like a sociopath, and he was outwardly violent but alone he was menacing acted harshly and would kinda throw people under the bus (metaphorically) he was arrested for attempted murder and well the day after that everyone was talking about how they couldnt believe he was this, or that he could do that

I'm diagnosed with ASPD (sociopathy), I do hop from job to job a lot and travel a lot without setting up a home. I have emotions and bonds but I experience them differently than others. I also only have very few meaningful connections with people. I am not violent though but this video was somewhat accurate, it kind of focused on the most extreme cases of ASPD
can I ask you a question to better understand my situation... If you found an easy job with the government that allowed you to slack off often because you worked from home. like what if you only really worked like half the time but got paid super well and because of that you had the freedom to get what you wanted with ease. Basically the money allowed you to have the life you wanted, with very minimal effort. Would you keep that job?
@@ecstatica23 also have ASPD, 100% yes. That’d give you so many opportunities to do more of what you want while still having the job and a source of income, that’s exactly what I’m looking for right now.
Was literally gonna comment that same thing but slightly different. Am also sociopath, and I can relate.
I'm not a sociopath, I have autism and ADHD. Feelings for me towards the slightest thing can crush me sometimes. I wish I could tone it down just a little. But I can't. However I'm really really curious about other people and how they live with their struggles. I want to know everything there is to know about many people. Because 1, it's a hyperfocus. And 2 like making realistic characters. Don't like stereotypes as much as I can avoid them.
Is there any stereotypes people have that I should avoid? I hope this isn't a rude request. Haha.
I was diagnosed with ASPD to I’m a sociopath I don’t really feel much besides anger but If someone makes me mad enough I’ll snap and I don’t feel sorry for what I did while I was angry I lie a lot I have lack of empathy but I can feel it but that doesn’t mean I’ll stop what I’m doing I have a big ego I like to watch people to see how their emotional is.

I’m diagnosed as a sociopath. It’s very hard to maintain emotional connections with friends and family. I’m constantly having to put effort in those connections but I’d do anything for them. It’s not an easy thing to learn to cope with. Most encounters with new relationships, co workers or otherwise leaves you wondering if they’re going to hurt you. I show respect but have a feeling of distrust from the very beginning. You know that you should feel happier than you are. You know you have no reason to suspect distrust from people you’ve hardly met or said more than a few words to. That’s just a few minor examples. Hope that helps people understand just a little bit better.

@@myriamguns2162 They have no clue. It's not like they are taking brain pet-scans to test brain activity on newborns and children and be like "ahah here's a psychopath".

Psychopath: Born this way
Sociopath: Born normal, but later developed sociopathy due to extreme trauma/abuse as a child.
Psychopath: Not impulsive in the slightest. They think and calculate before every action. They let logic and reason run their actions.
Sociopath: Highly impulsive and careless. They let emotion and anger run their actions.
Psychopath: Unable to feel certain emotions. Most psychopaths are unable to feel embarrassment, anxiety, anger, love, empathy, sympathy, regret, guilt, etc.
Sociopath: Have a wider range of emotions. They’re able to feel most emotions, but they have a harder time forming bonds with people and thinking clearly. They have less empathy and sympathy for people. They _can_ feel anger and rage, unlike psychopaths.
Psychopath: Typically smarter than sociopaths.
Sociopath: Sometimes less smart than psychopaths are, and much more reckless.
Psychopath: Unlikely to be violent or ever have violent tendencies (contrary to what you see in movies, it’s rare for psychopaths to have violent urges, let alone act on them or murder people. They usually see no point in it)
Sociopath: Likely to be violent. Sociopaths are likely to break things and harm people or animals in a fit of rage.
Psychopath: Highly successful. These people typically have high status in society and are great at mimicking the emotions that they can’t feel. They hold their composure and calmness. They never freak out or become stressed. They work great under pressure. They seem surprisingly normal and average.
Sociopath: Unlikely to become successful. Sociopaths often turn to drugs and crime. They end up in prison and they are terrible at composing themselves and functioning in society. They have little control on their emotions and impulses.
Of course, every sociopath and psychopath is different, but this is typically what is seen in these disorders.
The disorders are hard to diagnose. The diagnoses can only be made once the patient enters adulthood. Sociopaths are often misdiagnosed as bipolar or as having borderline personality disorder.
An example of a psychopathic murderer: Ted Bundy.
An example of a sociopathic murderer: Nikolas Cruz.
A homicidal psychopath is more likely to commit serial murders on separate occasions and in a more careful and calculated way than homicidal sociopaths.
A homicidal sociopath is more likely to murder someone out of anger, like in an argument or road rage. They’re more likely to commit mass murders than homicidal psychopaths.
I hope this helps all of you!

@@jarednewitt484 those are googles wikedia bullet points.
Main difference is sociopaths repress emotions/empathy, while psychopaths just don't have the emotion. Neither is irredeemably evil, but they lack the sort of emotional empathy that might help them behave "normally". One thing to keep in mind is psychopathy is studied mainly in prisons even though the majority of psychopaths are not violent or criminal and that skews the perception of their more negative behaviors. There's just not much motivation to study high functioning psychopaths.
The detachment does mean, when they go bad, they can be extreme with it, but they are still capable of making moral decisions.
The majority of psychopaths are not in prison, probably don't know that the reason they have always been different from others is psychopathy, and they wouldn't just put themselves up as study subjects if they were to come to this realization on their own. Knowing for a fact whether or not you have a psychopathic brain does nothing good for you in practice. I suspect that would be little success even if there were a strong financial incentive to participate in the study. All neurotypicals trying to make a buck, no psychopaths because they wouldn't want to be tagged and released back into the wild like an animal.
Psychopaths who are in prison usually have a long history of violence and make up for the overwhelming majority of the inmate violence.
Just some high thoughts. I'm probably off base.
@@brosephbroheim6428 For me, it helped put a name on why/how I'm different. I hope to eventually write a sort of self-help book for psychopaths. I've had several people suggest I might have Asperger's (I know they're getting away from that term) or higher functioning Autism. But I know people with that diagnosis (along with doing general research) and there are some distinct differences.
Understanding what you're dealing with can be helpful. Learning terms like "intrusive thoughts" can be helpful.
@@minimumwagesink5956 Cool, I'm curious if you want to say more about it.
Right now I'm enjoying the research videos that come from Prof. Sam Vaknin for more in depth information. This man made me seriously challenge everything that I thought I knew about psychopathy, narcissism, BPD, and autism that manifests in a way that appears to be these things.
@@brosephbroheim6428 I'm still in a research phase. I have thoughts about how I want the book to go. But since I'd like it to be more general than just my personal experience, I want to get my terminology right, and hopefully work with professional psychologists on some level...even if just consulting.
On the autism/psychopathy difference. The autistic people I know have told me they have very strong emotions, they just have trouble expressing them. For me on the other hand, there's many occasions where the emotions just aren't there when normal people would have strong emotional reactions. I was lucky to mostly have this interpreted as calm and maturity, but a close friend of mine said she found me scary sometimes even though I never really did/said anything scary. So having more open discussion about why that was and why I missed some cues other people would pick up on was helpful. Funnily both of my best friends are highly empathic people, so for them it explained why I seemed a little off to them in my responses. But the upside of that is I'm kind of a quiet place for them.
@@brosephbroheim6428 You know Sam is a narcissist/sociopath right?

I've never had any true friends just people I see to use to my benefit and once I get what I want they're of no more use to me. I've never been in love, lusted? Yes, but never in love. I'm pretty sure I know a sociopath, but I'm not sure. He definitely shows emotion but it's only big emotion when it's to do with himself. He does things that make it clear he doesn't care about those he says he does when those things are beneficial to himself and only "feels bad" when he's found out by those he is hiding it from. When it comes to face his repercussions, he hides and acts completely afraid.

I was also in an extremely low place in my life. I learned quickly she was very cruel but it was like an addiction for me. I was desperate to make her happy, which never works with sociopaths. They will never be healthy for anyone ever! I would leave her and a few weeks later she was texting me and laying on the charm so I’d come back. This happened so many times I’m feel embarrassed to say. She actually took about $200,000 from me and more. I tried to take her to court but it didn’t go as planned (a strange story). He graduated from the top college in the world, had 2 successful companies, was always invited to TV shows, and was overall a super smart and successful individual. The whole evening he was manipulating me, was also making me feel guilty, and was lying the entire time. The worst thing is that you don't even know how to act because what he says sounds right, but you feel very unsafe and have to protect yourself. I was lucky it ended after the 1st date because I moved, but I can guarantee that most people who see sociopaths/psychopaths will get into relationships with them as it's super hard to resist if you don't know what you are dealing with.

It’s true that looking at things without emotion can be very helpful. But emotional ties can also be good.
I would argue that would be impossible for many humans to actually overcome because thats basically what makes us human and have made the foundation of society and how we evolve as people if human were to "overcome"our ties we would crumble as a species and die off we would have no reason to push forward no passion to do anything or reason to

I've met plenty of sociopaths/narcissists and only a handful of psychopaths. Sociopaths tend to come from ghetto-like neighbourhoods from my experience, basically like this video said, they're a direct product of their upbringing/environment, but they can also come from seemingly normal households. Narcissists always give away red flags, but people who are not familiar with psychology can't see them that easily. One of the few psychopaths I know is in my family and another one is a former neighbour. They come across as asskissers but they're absolutely ruthless and will have no remorse if they want to harm you and/or your reputation.
After watching this...I'm pretty sure I dated a psychopath for 7 years.. yikes. He was very controlling, a boss at his job, insisted on being a boss at home, did not care about others at all. Many times when I would try to explain the concept of emotions to him he would seem astounded that anyone could experience anything. After years of nitpicking my every move, I left. And he didn't care for a second.
Thank you for letting me understand the difference between these two kinds of people. It's important to understand while trying to heal

That's legit where I just came from lol
My ex-groupmate in college was a psychopath. He enjoyed hurting others, selling it as a "joke". And he tried to manipulate us into doing the hard part of the job, however, he was the one who had the capability to be a persuasive spokesman. He offended basically all of us, but he always got away with it with his exceptional communication skills. My teachers and groupmates fell for him, they enjoyed his company, because he was so "loose", "stylish" and "never worrying". Then, when we talked about social things on one course, he himself admitted that he is not able to relate to people's problems. That made my suspicions firm about him. Today he is in a leader position, and he bragged with it in the group chat, but added "how hard task it is going to be for him"... Of course not, he just wanted sympathy and attention, and also did let us know "who is the boss"... Because psychopaths love receiving compliments that polish their egos, that is maybe the only emotion they feel. I can recognize a psychopath any day, and I would say that 1% is a very underestimated number. Every fifth person I know have these traits, most of them are blend into society...even better than me, who doesn't have APD!
Probably you’re dealing with a grandiose narcissist
@@kennymondesir188 That could be the case.

I agree with you in that the numbers are way off, because most never get diagnosed (they don't stay in therapy long enough). It's probably 10-15% NPD in the population. I looked at myself extensively because of the abuse I dealt with growing up, but also the environment around my family growing up. 50% of my classmates had divorced parents. I listened to friends dads growing up, how they behaved/thought/talked and our society is way more diseased "upstairs" than anyone wants to truly acknowledge! Look at the way society is cracking down with things like censorship etc, it's because things are so out of control top to bottom. But as the digital age progresses, more and more information is available, and mental health is declining from unforeseen consequences . Never before have kids been so detached by distractions, neglect, a lack of parenting or toxic parenting. Everybody seems to know someone like your friend (regardless of what end of the spectrum they could actually be diagnosed as).
@@crookedzebrarecordsthe bumper sprightly should be lower just because someone is toxic doesn't make them gave this disorder its a lot more to how they think and view the world and you will never know that. 10 % is Also definitely not narcissists, my therapist made me realize that when I wanted to be tested for the disorder.
Ok one thing, I'm a psychopath and I've done a lot of research studying my mental disorder and own thing you said that was completely wrong is psychopaths having amazing self control, very wrong, what we're good it is manipulating people into thinking we feel a certain way or basically just hiding psychopathy. Psychopaths struggle mentally because of this lack of self control knowing that what they do hurts people and they can't control it, not in an empathic way but in a more "I won't get anything out of this" way

I heard a psychoanalyst say, psychopaths are born , sociopaths are made
Psychologist* But it is true. Psychopathy is caused by genetics, while sociopathy is caused by abuse and/or harsh environment during childhood. A lot of sociopaths suffered from a brain injury or have high function autism. I really wish they would include more information in their videos like this.
You can easily tell a psycopath from brain scans as its found there is a given part of 'less activity' in the brain compared to a healthy person. This is predominantly genetic, however can be caused by any brain trauma affecting a given area of the brain (frontal lobe I believe). Sociopaths however can develop or adapt the same given traits through abuse, stress etc. But in saying that sociopaths are known to still feel emotions from time to time, as they are compressed rather than the latter of being non-existent. So yes sociopaths are an adaptive like indused disorder while psychopaths are inevitable if their brain patterns comply?
That is very true I am living proof I am not sociopath I am a psychopath.
@@joreinertson3839 don't get me wrong, but a psycopath would never out themselves or confess to being a psycopath, they'd hide in plain sight trying to fit in. one notable issue with your description of psychopaths' is that they are charming and can mold themselves to fit into certain relationships. this infers that this is a discernable trait of this disposition. being phsycopathic doesn't guarantee or even create a high likelihood of having charisma and objectivity. those would depend on the individuals character.
This gives a good insight into the nature vs nurture kind of debate. There are some evils that are not given to someone right off the bat such as a sociopath and then there are those who simply have a defect where they are simply what they are born as like a psychopath.
The conclusion? Not all evil is born with a person. Most times, evil is developed. But there is always the 1 in a million that simply are not capable to be any other way.
Why can people in the debate not just accept that it can be both and not one or the other?

Nish wayz I would definitely agree with what you said, I Personally find it fun to manipulate people not in a way to hurt them or for benefit for myself but to just see how I can change and control what they do. The reason I would say what I do is not really bad because I often point this out to them, not to mention I point out to my friends when others are trying to manipulate then! Here is a way manipulation can be good. I just got my first ever girlfriend but the thing Is before we got together she was very suicidal and depressed all the time and so I made it my goal to make her happy over the period of a few days now I have actively been using her own words against her to show her why she is wrong about being worthless and other things along those lines. Even though it might be a smaller form of manipulation I would still say its a way it could be used for good rather then self gain or benefit.
Yep that sums it up pretty well

I feel like some people need to remember that even though it seems like most serial killers have ASPD, most people with ASPD are not serial killers. Serial killers show pyschopathic traits, but most of them wouldn't meet the criteria for an official diagnosis. Though potentially very dangerous, the "evil" of these people is over hyped. A lot of times it has minimal effects on people around them. The whole psychopath=murderer is like depression=emo kid who writes sad poetry. In reality looking into the minds of psychopaths/sociopaths is quite boring unless you're looking at extreme ends
For people more interested in this sort of idea check out the show Dexter!!!! The entire show explores the idea how he's trying to act feelings that he knows a normal person would have. It goes in depth what that might be like and how it affects his personal life.
I knew a girl in high school who seemed to only interact with people if it meant she could hurt them somehow. She would develop emotional relationships with depressed boys in her grade, than pressure them to commit suicide. Only one kid ever tried it, and thankfully he was unsuccessful.
