Mike and Jake host defense industry legend Norm Augustine in a rare interview!
He started as an aeronautical engineer in the 1950s and rose to become the first CEO of Lockheed Martin, before leaving it all.
He lived through the 1980s defense industry heyday, wrote a hilarious book called ‘Augustine’s Laws ’ and led the industry through a massive consolidation in the early 1990s after the infamous ‘Last Supper.’ This is a first-hand account of how it all went down-he was in the room when it happened.
Norm shares his professional experiences and some amazing personal stories-like how he almost bought Northrop Grumman. This is an interview you don’t want to miss.
If you need any more reasons to listen, his resume and achievements are so incredible they sound made up:
    - Co-founded In-Q-Tel, the venture capital arm of the CIA
    - Chairman of the Red Cross
    - President of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics
    - President of the Boy Scouts of America
    - Chairman of the Aerospace Industries Association
    - President and Chairman of the Association of the United States Army
    - Chairman of the National Academy of Engineering
    - Served 16 years on the President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology
    - traveled to 130 countries
    - holds 34 honorary degrees
    - and received dozens of accolades, including the Pentagon’s highest civilian decoration, the Distinguished Civilian Service Award---FIVE TIMES.

No. We need to get better about realizing who the smart people are in the room today rather than having an epiphany about the things they said decades ago after history proved them right. We need to get our shit together now.

Great interview. I found the story of the Last Supper very interesting having spent 37 years in in a small job shop / machine shop from 1979 to 2016. We did a lot of aerospace work for several of those smaller companies that eventually merged into what we have today.

Mr Augustine signed my copy of Augustine’s Laws. Lately I’ve had an urge to update his charts to see where we stand now. Thanks for having him on - always enjoy your podcast.

Great conversation, tons of interesting stories. Also, my condolences on missing out on a Moochie. May the force be with you in 2024 Pako. Either Justin gets his hat trick or you get your much deserved Moochie and we finally get our much deserved F-16's here and our flyboys kick some ruzzian butt! One thing with the "Defence dividend" (Peace dividend in Europe, same thing) Mr Augustine mentioned, the reverberations of that folly are with us to this day and are felt especially harshly here because even with some moderate ramping up of artillery shell production in the US, it's nowhere near enough. I also took great note of the mention of "31 Abrams tanks in 11 months", those 31 tanks would not even be enough to guard my home town in Donbas (pop 65,000), let alone a 1,000 km front line, and we get hassled for the counter not getting the results everyone expected!!!

I need to try harder for that Moochie, but that's nothing compared to what you guys are doing, especially with what equipment you have. Keep fighting the good fight!

Great work gentlemen! You obviously did your homework, as usual, and that was instrumental in keeping Mr. Augustine engaged throughout the interview. I work closely with LM here in Ft. Worth and Norm is a legend there.
