Some gentle 'banter' about potatoes there lol no wonder Cocker didnt explain himself. Even for 1994 its just not good even parody lol! They would never have aired that these days. I remember this very clearly. Recently ive read Cairns talking about other times in the industry when sterotyping or alluding to being Irish was more than obvious and directed in a negative way (Also the new emergance of hate due to Brexit and what its like for someone who comes to live in Britain). Being so young myself at the time of this album i didnt really think much of them being irish or what they might be still encountering as a consequence. I also didnt know until relistening to troublegum and hearing the dahmer line on 'trigger inside' that it occured to me he wasnt straight. A fellow Bi. Wow, It certainly makes me understand the isolation and struggles on troublegum in a whole new light, but then i am 30 years older and at the time it was a primal attraction rather than conscious connecting to the themes. Still a great album, revisiting it in 2024 is like having new eyes!
