The strategy with loot boxes is to have them at the launch of a game, when interest in the title is at it's highest, make plenty of money from the early adopters, then as soon as profits taper off, remove loot boxes with a fancy PR announcement that quickly sweeps it under the rug to help avoid negative press until enough time has passed that they can reintroduce loot boxes with a new title

The fact that they’re removing gacha is inherently good, for sure. But I’m very curious how this new “Spotlight Shop” is gonna work. A couple points for reference: 1) There’s already a Mii Racing Suit shop, where the standard cost per outfit (each one treated as a separate driver) is 100 rubies, approximately $50 USD if buying entirely with cash. 2) With the current pipe system, the usual 6 “Spotlight” items are guaranteed to be earned in the worst case scenario of spending 450 rubies to clear the pipe. That technically makes each item cost a maximum of 75 rubies in that worst case. If this new shop follows a similar pricing model, then it’ll likely be “cheaper” for people who only want 1-2 items, but more expensive for those who want everything. And that’s not even addressing how you need dupes to level things up (excluding premium tickets), so that’s even more people might buy. TL;DR This new shop format could be better for casual players, but end up milking *even more* out of the whales. I dunno. Just a thought.
A lot of people probably won't remember or care about it, but this reminded me of the time when Nintendo (supposedly) interceded to make Cygames' Dragalia Lost's gacha less predatory by lowering the price, giving out more currency in daily logins and events and taking out some of the most useless stuff that could drop in the gacha
I doubt the reason they're getting rid of lootboxes has anything to do with morality. I think it has more to do with the fact that regulators in various countries around the world are starting to crack down on lootboxes and regulating them as gambling
Hello! Mario Kart Tour player here. This move, along with the addition of battle mode and the indication that "Lots of other things are in the works too" and the apparent retention of free pipes (which act more as random gift boxes earned only by free gameplay than pay loot boxes) shows that Nintendo values longevity in their product and IP. It shows that they do not want to just throw away their mobile game and would rather adapt to mutually benefit the player and themselves by providing a much less volatile and much more stable mechanic.
@@JuneTheDude92 likely poor amount of revenue was coming from it, miitomo was actually more successful before it was announced to be closing, but that one has a dedicated server still going thankfully
A less-than-ideal explanation is that ratings boards are starting to be more aggressive with their ratings on games with "surprise mechanics". It was just revealed that the new Assassin's Creed Mirage will come with an Adults-Only rating, and the reason is due to "gambling". So perhaps they are moving away from them because of that. But hopefully it's because they don't like how predatory they are.
Tbh I hope they change for Fire Emblem Heroes too. There is like some characters that share the same color in a banner and it's so frustrating to get who you want because of that
I think the worst thing about lootboxes is how it affects kids. Kids don't know how much a dollar is worth and they're never happy until they get what they want, and they'll keep buying boxes with their parents money.
This gives me the idea that Mario Kart Tour isn't *on* the way out yet, but it's getting there. My guess is that Tour will be supported for the next year or two, and once it reaches EoS, or at least when it receives it's last update, Nintendo's gonna get the Mario Kart dev team working on the next Mario Kart (Whatever that may be called.) pretty much immediately after, about in time for the final product to release on the next console. Additionally, Tour's EoS would coincide with the completion of the booster course pass in this timeline, which could be another reason why they decided to add DLC to 8DX now of all times; to immortalize Mario Kart Tour in a Mario Kart with great reception, an large player base, and above all, good sales. Tour's city tracks (and original tracks) aren't lost to time, and Nintendo makes a better profit then adding them to Tour alone.
That's exactly what I'm thinking, they'll slowly stop supporting the game, making everything available in a shop that occasionally rotates. I have heard that quite a bit more content is planned for Mario Kart Tour, but I think that's to help flesh the game out a bit for when new tours stop being released. They'll probably automate tours in some way, and then let the game run until it stops being profitable
EA's Battlefront 2 was one of those necessary evils in its initial launch. The consumer anger showed gaming corporations that we were tired of microtransactions, and it even got to the point where some states had court cases on whether loot boxes qualified as gambling or not. It's nice to see more companies stepping away from loot boxes, even in free-to-play content.
I would also consider the idea that this change is due to legislation that limits loot boxes in some countries. Don’t know the specifics but it could make implementing this stuff difficult
I'd imagine it's a combination of legislation, and them moving away from the mobile games market in general. Making mobile games seemed to be mostly an Iwata thing, the new guy doesn't seem to be interested in the medium.
The fortune cookies are really not a big part of Pocket Camp. I think most players do not spend their leaf tickets on the random items, but either spend leaf tickets on the items they need to buy from the scavenger hunt events or they really buy the nice items exclusive to leaf tickets. You do not need the fortune cookies at all and you get some every now and then for the game currency.
Fall Guys is doing that now with the new free to play model where if you want the special costumes you either have to play regularly to get the showbucks for what you want or purchase them on their own. Makes it easier to spend money on a game when you know you are at least getting what you want with what you pay for rather than paying for a chance to get what you want instead.
Well, this game doesn't have Loot Boxes per say, but Pikmin Bloom, a game I love and play a lot, is also getting rid of money-required upgrades. If you wanted to hold more Pikmin, seeds, nectar, flowers, or postcards, you needed to pay real money. They released a notice that an update will get rid of the money requirement, and it will be able to be done with coins, which you can pay real money to get, OR plant flowers. So you CAN continue to pay money, but it technically won't be necessary anymore, and only needed for the people who want it sooner.
This is where I have a problem with the update: They're getting rid of the spotlight boosts. Below is all the happiness that I'm gonna miss. 1. My level 5 Rosalina Swimwear will no longer get to be top shelf on Koopa Cape T. 2. My level 5 Volendam Rosalina will no longer get to be top shelf on RMX Rainbow Road 2T, Amsterdam Drift 2T or Paris Promenade 2R/T. 3. this is really oversimplification of what’s happening. The EU is outlawing games with lootboxes which is great however no one knows how much the items in the shop in mario kart tour will cost. they could cost a few rubies or hundreds which is why this is very worrying. before, with the chance element, you had a small chance of getting the item you wanted rather quickly out of the pipe if you were lucky. now you’re guaranteed the item you want but you need to have enough in game currency for it and if you don’t, you have to spend actual money to buy more which is troubling. i’d get items all the time without spending money but there’s a chance you might have to now if the price for each item is outrageous and knowing the game and the economy, i fear it will be.
Even in that worst case it is still better on odds vs price ratio. Getting all the random junk items in the world doesn't matter unless you use them. Most of the items you got were nothings.
Also this increases the dependency on coins to get characters since now you wouldn’t be able to get most commons/supers without coins. (Unless the daily challenge pipe stays which it probably won’t)
@@Buglin_Burger7878 I wasn't talking about the 94 nothings. The only things that are worth anything are the 6 or so high end items that are in a pipe, and you're able to get all 6 for 450 rubies. If the cost of each high end becomes 150 rubies each or something, that's an overall worse deal. Then you're paying 900 rubies for 6 high ends.
Xenoblade 2 did the weirdest thing with their lootboxes. They were lootboxes, all right. With each good pull it was harder to get another good pull and no doubles were ever looted. But they were also free for some reason. Not that we mind that.
I think XB2 used RNG rolls for unique Blades because during the game's development they didn't have the time or resources to implement proper in-game events/quests for acquiring them all, a la Vess/Praxis/Herald. That's just my Theory. (Or some of the younger employees were just obsessed with gacha lol)
This makes me so happy. I play Mario kart tour a lot I don’t spend any money but I’ve grinded hours and hours in the game just to get shafted and now I can buy what I want and get it Guaranteed. I can’t wait to tell my dad this as he also plays it
I think the gacha elements in the mobile games were always just an experiment to see if the model was actually viable long term and thus the removal in Mario Kart was Nintendo concluding that it wasn’t. That was why the gacha were exclusive to the mobile games, Nintendo didn’t want to risk tarnishing a proper console game with gacha as other companies had done. Others had mentioned the EU’s regulations cracking down on loot boxes as gambling and that is absolutely a possible reason for why Nintendo came to the conclusion it did.

In short yeah depending on how you look at them they seem both greedily anti-consumer, AND stubborn in their ways enough to appear the opposite of greedy. And I hate that weird contradiction because I otherwise *love* them. Or rather I want to love them because I do enjoy their products a lot, all gripes aside.
@@deraile Reminder, this is a company that saw the internet as a fad until towards the end of Iwata’s life and still sees games as toys. These two facts alone should actually explain a good half of those decisions.
@@rezahydra True, a good part of the 'puzzle' so to speak is that they don't act like a modern company. Or at least don't do things you'd expect they would in their position. ...At least from a western point of view. In short they very much do things 'their own way' and that should be enough as an explainer for it all, as much as it annoys me.
I dunno if it's that, or they just see all the legal issues which are fast approaching when it comes to lootboxes

Either way, good to know the problem is finally being cracked down on and Nintendo is being smart about it.
I'm imagining they're trying to get ahead of regulations in certain countries. I'm guessing their new marketplace will rely primarily on FOMO instead of randomness + FOMO.
I mean, don't all marketplaces rely on FOMO? Especially when it's a want For a want?

ARLO'S GOING TO FREAK OUT
And now we wait…
Arlo Pikmin 4 annoucment where is the video?
Desperately waiting for the Pikmin 4 reaction.

I can only assume the reason why there has not been a PIKMIN 4 video yet is because Arlo died upon seeing the announcement.

ARLO WAKE UP PIKMIN 4 JUST DROPPED.
The fact that they’re removing gacha is inherently good, for sure. But I’m very curious how this new “Spotlight Shop” is gonna work. A couple points for reference:
1) There’s already a Mii Racing Suit shop, where the standard cost per outfit (each one treated as a separate driver) is 100 rubies, approximately $50 USD if buying entirely with cash.
It is worse for casuals since earning the normal/super drivers will all depend on daily selects
It is exactly this
A lot of people probably won't remember or care about it, but this reminded me of the time when Nintendo (supposedly) interceded to make Cygames' Dragalia Lost's gacha less predatory by lowering the price, giving out more currency in daily logins and events and taking out some of the most useless stuff that could drop in the gacha
I'll believe that they're actually taking a stance against these things when they remove them from Fire Emblem Heroes.
Agreed
Yup, as well as tell TPC to stop too...
I doubt the reason they're getting rid of lootboxes has anything to do with morality. I think it has more to do with the fact that regulators in various countries around the world are starting to crack down on lootboxes and regulating them as gambling
I agree. But its not just Nintendo. Everyone is abandoning loot boxes so they dont get obliterated by their fanbases
@@Wienerdog5 can't expect kids to by your product when it's classified as gambling. Which to be fair, it is.

Good luck eventually getting Kamek, this should help a lot!
I play MKT as well
They threw away dr. mario world tho
Still this is a good sign
@@DonutTPOTer Do we know the reason why Nintendo removed Dr. Mario World?
@@JuneTheDude92 likely poor amount of revenue was coming from it, miitomo was actually more successful before it was announced to be closing, but that one has a dedicated server still going thankfully

PIKMIN 4!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Arlo are you well? Are you safe right now?
WHERES ARLO!!!
Watch this slowly turn into a Mario Kart Tour channel
The bit at the beginning makes me really want a behind the scenes video for the puppet work
Congrats Arlo! All your waiting has paid off!
Tbh I hope they change for Fire Emblem Heroes too. There is like some characters that share the same color in a banner and it's so frustrating to get who you want because of that
Arlo is so dedicated to playing that puppet he’ll run over to fix something still in-character. Respect
The simple idea of Arlo meeting Caddicarus make me wanna see a video where both of them interect with each other !
honestly arlo watching the remote control car drive off the table was... weirdly charming to watch.
I think the worst thing about lootboxes is how it affects kids. Kids don't know how much a dollar is worth and they're never happy until they get what they want, and they'll keep buying boxes with their parents money.
come on Arlo, I already need your reaction to the latest E3 direct
PIKMIN 4 WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
ARLO WAKE UP!!!! ARLO
The people at pax must have been surprised to see a dark blue cookie monster walking around there.
Pikmin 4???!!

Arlo: Washington is beautiful.
Me: *in Washington and out for a walk* Damn right we are.
Can't wait for the Pikmin 4 video!
So you CAN continue to pay money, but it technically won't be necessary anymore, and only needed for the people who want it sooner.
i think your going to like this september nintendo direct 👀 🌸
my stand on loot boxes is if they are only free, then they are ok. such as the loot boxes in splatoon 3 and kirby and the forgotten land.
ARLO WHERE ARE YOU?!
Anything with lootboxes should be rated 18+ by the ESRB. This won't help everyone, but at least minors won't be gambling.

PIKMIN 4 IS REAL
0:06 the way the screen shook lmao
I wish you could guest star on Sesame Street with Elmo and have a Nintendo theme for that episode that would be cool
this is really oversimplification of what’s happening.
Yeah people are worried each high end will cost 200 rubies as opposed to the current system, where you can get 6 high ends if you save 450 rubies.
It was gacha without the predatory elements.
I can’t wait to tell my dad this as he also plays it
PIKMIN 4 GOT ANNOUNCED ARLO
I think the gacha elements in the mobile games were always just an experiment to see if the model was actually viable long term and thus the removal in Mario Kart was Nintendo concluding that it wasn’t.
That was why the gacha were exclusive to the mobile games, Nintendo didn’t want to risk tarnishing a proper console game with gacha as other companies had done.
Others had mentioned the EU’s regulations cracking down on loot boxes as gambling and that is absolutely a possible reason for why Nintendo came to the conclusion it did.
