Thank you for saying things like “That makes it the only card from the 2020 list to move up.” Those little stat tidbits are really fun.
fun & useful. You can really see what makes cards good or even somewhat powerkreep resistant
I love cards like Corpse Appraiser. It doesn't do anything broken, but it's just great value that helps you win.
It doesn't make you go "Oh shit, I need to deal with this ASAP", but it still easily pulls its weight in a more subtle way.
Ye thats A LOT OF VALUE! load up graveyard, card selection/advantage, and adding to board
"It's beginning, to look a lot, like GRIX-is, 🎶..."
I started playing magic in college when Gatecrash came out, and spent like $700 (from my student loan refund, cus I was a fiscally responsible 19 year old) building what was at the time a dominant, top tier "Junk Rites" Abzan reanimator deck in standard. Had a ton of fun, placed highly in, and even won, a few FNMs, which felt great as a new player. Then my buddy built a much "lower tier" Grixis Control deck.
Every single time I played him he would just go "Uhhh, Slaughter Games your Unburial Rites." *scoop*
I've never stopped hating Grixis Control since.
Nicol Bolas, Dragon-God was such a beast in limited, one of my opponents just scoop up when when he sees the Planeswalker deployed
Crazily enough, he’s actually a beast elsewhere. The control list I run in Modern utilizes Bolas, and it is very rare I lose a game after he hits the board.
One of the absalute funnest channels to watch. I watch all your list just wanted to shout out "great job"
I love the 3 color combination videos but I would love to Abzan next but I know you are doing shards first, wedges got a decent amount of support in Ikoria and March of the machine
"Number 2: Siege Rhino"
"Number 1: The Second Siege Rhino"
@DNGNDriver Siege Rhino is great it does work phenomenally with flicker effects and that 6 point life swing is no joke
Top ten sideboard?
Unironically one of the best suggestions I've ever seen!
I agree great suggestion.
God i love grixis. On another note, i hate grixis!
The duality of grixis
*chuckles*
That's the thing about loving grixis. It's like being a Mets fan.
Grixis is my favorite color combo, kess, dissident mage is my main commander
Theres nothing you can do to a grixis player that they haven't already done to themselves
I find it so amusing that nearly every card in this list is some unfathomable, god-like villain.
But the #1 spot is an unassuming little 3/3 uncommon 😂
Corpse appraiser is just a nice card
Love Grixis I have 3 or more Grixis commander decks. And Grixis is my go to on arena.
Nicol Bolas, Dragon God is such a good card. I got my play set when it was up to $10 a piece (sad I know) because I knew it was going to be broken at some point. Then they brought phyrexia back, and with it the proliferate mechanic. What a mistake that was.
Crosis' design is... interesting. 🤭
Esper used to be my favorite shard but my grixis deck has been so good in standard for the past few years I’ve come around to it
Grixis control: when you want to work twice as hard to be 80% as good as UW control.
On the other hand, you get Thoughtseize to give said UW mages fits.
... But you have triple the fun 😉
@@littlegeek5159At that point just play Esper. Imo the best control colors.
I play Grixis for Snappy/Kolaghan’s Command. Far too enjoyable.
@@SiegfriedDrachentoeterEsper is for people who want it on easy. Grixis challenges you.
Grixis or esper is my favorite shard perhaps my favorite 3 color combo in general.
Rise is like Unsummon plus Animate Dead, and Fall is like Hymm to Tourach. A real throwback
I appreciate this video for showing me my Bolas typal EDH deck won't be too expensive to nab in paper
I remember there was a way to equip Nicol Bolas to a Nicol Bolas, but I don't remember how.
Have a Bolas creature and Bolas planeswalker in play. Turn Bolas planeswalker into an artifact with Liquimetal Torque. Play Bludgeon Brawl. Bolas planeswalker artifact is now also an Equipment. So you can equip him to the Bolas creature.
@@Valerie-nm1grAh, thank you.
Crimm has entered chat
I dont think I've EVER seen a bladecoul serpent on arena
Grixis decks and therefore Appraiser took a big hit with the Fable ban, but it’s possible that the Cavern reprint could make a multicolor vampire deck that wants him for graveyard hate viable somewhere.
Grixis, the best color combo for winning the way your opponent can never predict, through chaos.
Cruel Ultimatum and Dragon-God are the two best. Not really close.
Except for all the cards that beat both. This list is based on objective performance, not opinion.
Sorry to say it, both cards were heavily outperformed, including by an uncommon of all things.
Hey what's the outro song? Most accurate I can find is Lars Günther - Silence, but I don't feel like it's it.
Top 10 shards?
Can you make a BUG (sultai) video? 🙏🏻💯
Ahhh Grixis, this is one of the few 3 colours I've played a lot of, thanks to my Sengir tribal which uses the Partner Sengir and that UR Partner, but mostly for my Nicol Bolas tribal, which, as I'm sure you can tell, is made up of every Nicol Bolas related card.
The best color combination is 5colour Simic!
Man I loved my old Nekusar deck, I had been tweaking it for years but somebody broke into my car and stole it, so that was a few grand down the drain… I might argue Esper is better at pure control but it’s close
Sad :(
seeing universes beyond cards be able to make these list is upsetting. I get there's no getting around empirical data, but WotC is really fucking around with something they shouldn't
expect a lot more of these, IP holders won't want to have their cards to be flops when making deals with WotC. UB being strong is intentional.
@Reluxthelegend the fact we nearly got more UB cards than actual magic cards this past year is the real issue.
Top ten bolas cards
Nicky B God variant won't get more points in pioneer in mono G devotion deck coz Karn bited the dust 😂
Bolas is so goated
Nicol Bolas, Dragon God?
Edit:
Huh, would have never guessed.
Esper is. Grixis has no uncounterable boardwipe and life gain.
I’ll rejoice when they print a Grixis supreme verdict.
Top cards are always mistake vintage cards, or something in the last two years. Power creep taking this game so bad.
Not really. Cruel Ultimatum and Corpse Appraiser make this list. Nizza's method of appraisal skews towards showing what Standard cards are mildly playable in Commander.
The Vintage stuff coming out on top proves that power creep just can't hold back old cards.
If he did two videos for each one video he did, comparing side by side "counting Commander" and "not counting Commander", then for example in this video Nekusar would be #1 and honestly probably Crosis would be very close to the top for being on colors and a Dragon.
But Prince of Thralls, Sedris the Traitor King or Thraximundar would have shown up too, plus, outside of Shards of Alara, not Kess but that other Vampire in Grixis from same year as Nekusar.
And the other Commanders in Grixis like Davros and Saruman.
The power creep would not be the main explanation because the Commander being almost a separate deck would warp the stats outside the 99. You'd just see 10 legendary creatures because they allow the colors to be played.
Oh and various Mishras which would benefit from popularity beyond their power level due to such deep cut on the Lore.
I'm trying to remember what the Grixis deck had the year Lord Windgrace dropped.
Top 10 Lists are never objective from anyone they just highlight focuses on subsets of cards people are ignoring.
To get a feel of where the state of power creep actually is check which cards are banned from the most formats and get banned the quickest.
Which cards were considered safe for Standard or Pioneer or Commander (beginner formats) so they saw print--- but tore up at least 2 eternal formats and were a mistake for the format they were intended to fit in.
Skullclamp is a great example of power creep, more than anything simply because it is colorless instead of requiring commitment to Black which would have been less aggressive vs the previous precedent of years of design associating sac outlets with Black more often than not. (Altar of Dementia was I think a Tempest design, and Phyrexian Altar Invasion, and first set of block. So it was 2 full blocks before Mirrodin and 2/3 of Invasion block, almost 9 sets with no colorless sac outlet. And P Altar was a 3 cast Skullclamp was a 1 cast.)
Corpse Appraiser makes Standard run but is 3 to cast not 2 like the Split card at the beginning of the video, and Crosis Charm is probably better in many situations but isn't legal in Standard for sure and I doubt it's legal in Pioneer or Modern to compete.
So Crosis Charm isn't getting to show its full potential against the field anywhere except Commander.
Cruel Ultimatum hasn't been powercrept by any Bolas Walker permanent--- but the Bolas Walkers started to do different things playing in the space of control of permanents more.
Bolas 1.0 is power crept by now but this isn't an issue bc 1.0 was underpowered on release.
Basically of all the cards in the whole color alignment, a randomly selected player that didn't tell you what they were building except color--- it would be a good guess to assume they may want Cruel Ultimatum.
So it gets lots of reprints. But no bans.
Siege Rhino made the world safe from Cruel Ultimatum.
Thragtusk is Power Creep.
Siege Rhino is Power Creep.
Grixis never gets Power Creep on any of its good stuff without them thinking really hard about it.
They let Cruel Ultimatum blow Crosis the Purger out of the water. That was the last time they were serious about Power Creeping Grixis.
Sauron they wanted to relive Conflux and make a Boss Monster permanent card so they made sure it was format gatekept to places where Celestial Purge and Rest in Peace are almost not even good enough compared to Leyline Binding. Sauron is splashy but only as serious as Bolas 1.0 for the Modern connoisseurs of Dark Lords.
Cruel Ultimatum is basically still where it's at, but Bolas Dragon-God is almost convenient for Planeswalkers.
That's why they won't let Dark Ritual into Modern lol. Among other things. Even if they did Cruel Ultimatum + Ritual probably better than Dragon-God + Ritual.
Cruel Ultimatum should get hall of famed to permanent Mythic Rarity.
The non creature spells in these colors are always better, and usually the 3 Guilds separately play way better than the cards that are 3 colors.
I say this as someone who keeps trying to force Bolas 1.0 and Sauron and I *always* lose to spot removal or counterspell or just about anything that costs 2 mana.
Cavern of Souls is TRUE power creep. But that was 10 years ago. They're not creeping that.
I get Commander isn't a quote tournament format. But you should take it into account more than just mentioning how many Commander decks run said card
The problem is that most of my Top 10s are about the history of competitive Magic. I only provide the number of EDHRec decks as a little piece of extra information, just like the price. It has nothing to do with how this video is measured and it never will, unless it becomes a premier format.
When people bring this up, I often say it is like going to a Chinese food restaurant and ordering lasagna.
Nico Bolas Dragon God is the card that made me quit the game
I honestly dont know why there are even 5 colors anymore. Green and white are soooooo bad compared
