Darryl is actually my favorite Charmed character. When I watched the show for the first time as a kid I thought he will end up becoming a whitelighter because he is so kind and caring and always helps sisters. I was convinced the show will at some point reveal that Darryl is a future angel and the reason he is so attached to sisters is because it's his destiny to become magical too. I was so shocked when that didn't happen. I think Darryl deserved to become whitelighter more than Brody did
Darryl is one of my favourite characters and it is still possible for him to become a whitelighter as he hasn't died yet when he does he will be a prime candidate to become one. Darryl has been touched by magic and magic will always find him. Also I always consider the true end of Charmed is "something wicca this way goes" as the show first episode was "something wicca this way comes" Darryl starts and ends the show.
@@BetterWithBob It is a pretty good theory about Darryl he should I become a white lighter or an avatar or he should’ve compete against Leo if he was her one of the magical person in the TV series he would’ve done good in the world it was too bad they not give him more storyline more than a cop 👮🏾♂️ I watch the time when I was a kid back then and I know for a fact I had some attachment to the sisters the three of them but if the writers would have gave him a great story line he would’ve done more like saving the world if he had supernatural powers if he was a white lighter and an avatar he would have change the world and do good and helped the Holliwels I wish Darryl Would’ve done more everyone would have been a fan of him but he did not get better storyline and lot of scenes was cut and it was a disappointment I feel like Charmed was never inclusive enough when it’s about black character I remember there was a black cat he had a mistress and he lived with a black woman and then when he turned into a human he killed the witch that was black of course she was a black woman a woman of colour “ and you also had the Seer I feel like there was a difference between her and the other Seer so I feel like black characters are misleading in charmed like the chief police officer from Francisco Darryl
Darryl he is my favourite character also but he hasn’t had enough credit if they gave him a good storyline to become a white lighter or an avatar he would have been in the same position as Leo but there was another Officer in charmed name Kyle the elders Made him a white lighter so he was the only police officer that got turned into a white lighter so this is interesting why Darryl she never got enough credit and why the scenes were cut with his wife Sheila and his kids he had two boys And I heard that he always knew the girls the three of them were witches so this is strange I feel like his character was very misguided and mislead it
I actually had the fortunate opportunity to meet most of the cast at 90scon recently. I shook Dorians hand gave him a huge hug, and let him know he was just as an important part of our childhoods as the rest of them.
He seems to have a lot of affection for the show, and said it's the one role of his that he's ever rewatched, and that he's usually super critical of his own work but he ended up just loving it
@@BetterWithBob his line wasn’t as to capacity as the others, and you can tell he was extremely touched by the sentiment. I let him know we missed him in s8 but loved his ending and are still upset Cole turned him into a water cooler.
I actually have a problem watching season 8 on rewatches because it doesn't feel like Charmed without him. I have a much easier time just pretending that the show ended with season 7. Is that bad? Sure. But 🤷♀️
@@SoLongStarFallI feel the same about the entire arc with Kaley Cuoco. I am not being mean, and she seems like a lovely human (who just happened to have a baby and is likely married or about to be married to one of my favorite actors of all time), but I HATE her on Charmed. I hate the character, the delivery, the arc- ALL OF IT.
Yes, that would have been awesome. I was literally thinking this while watching the video. Daryl is a great character but as someone who is been on the show as so long, it would have been nice to delve more into him and from his perspective.
Eh Charmed wouldn't have killed him off I don't think. It wasn't the type of show to just kill a main character for shock value unless it served the story
@@BetterWithBobPrue, kidding 😂 It added a definite shock us all but I'm come to realize her removal kept the show fresh, rather I or others liked it not. The show probably would have been a bit shorter than 8 seasons.
I always appreciated the Prue and Darryl relationship after Andy’s gone. Something I missed after Prue was gone. And season seven was a good season for Darryl. I liked his ending even though I would’ve liked to see him come back or mentioned in the series finale. Thanks for doing this video!
@@BetterWithBob One of the things I very much like and one of the things Prue and Paige have in common is that they have a certain friendship towards Darryl.
Ironic that Darryl was no longer in season 8 and here comes Henry, Paige’s boyfriend who turned to be her husband was the new cop. But Darryl’s character was so good knowing that there was a human / mortal who knew about their secret.
The 2 did always have great chemistry in their solo scenes esp with her background as a social worker. But I still don't like the idea for some reason. Feels incestuous lol
It's not ironic at all. Hollywood had (and still has) a serious taboo about non white men (especially black men) getting with white women. The Charmed Ones either dated or married damn near all of their major male characters. Even one offs tended to be one of the sister's flings. But that wasn't about to happen with Daryl, which is why we got an offscreen wife for the first few seasons. So, Daryl became more of a Token Black Guy than an actual character, in spite of what the creator says. It's really easy to figure out once learn Hollywood's dirty little secret.
It always bugged me how Sheila seemed to do a complete 180 on how she felt about the sisters and him helping her. I understand that it put him in danger a lot of times, and that was likely how she got to that point. But as you said, they never SHOW it happen, so it just seems jarring when she changes her viewpoint
Lol I actually don't remember noticing the jarring difference at the time. There was so much space btw the 2 episodes. Plus I try to memory hole most things about S6 anyway so... 🤷🏾♂️
I dont undertand Sheila's chracter at all. She seems supportive at first but one particular thing that happens. Shliela should have been gotten Darryl back on track with the sisters. Also where did this character came from?
The way they downgraded him to Morris after he refused to help them tells you everything about Darryl’s place in their life. I mean they even took his soul without his permission, selfish brats lol
The soul episode was my biggest "they don't even respect him or what he's already done" moment. I just don't see, even with no development of him to the same length or scale, them doing that to Andy had he survived. It suggests turmoil with writers and maybe their views of him. Then Chris to still go. It was like "fine, we'll write you in... but you won't like it".
@@SabrinaRina my favorite one was Phoebe saying “and you think if she exposes us she‘s not gonna bust you to?“ to him while Sheridan was like 5 ft away 💀
@That Charmed Lover Yeah, like maybe the actor was a great presence, but some writers were really aggrevated of what even his point was or that he could stay a good loyal guy all those years. Or maybe (full joke, but hard to not think about now), someone was ACAB. 😅
@@SabrinaRina Possibly it might have been meant to show that Chris was a bad influence on them but I really don't know what they were smoking in that writers' room that year
I never took too much notice of not seeing behind closed doors in Darryl's life but now you mention it, I did much prefer it once Sheila came along. It gave his character some much needed fleshing out. And yes, I'd like to have seen more of it over the course of the series. Darryl was always a favourite of mine and I hated what the sisters did to him in S6. One of the many reasons that season was one of my least favourites. But to see his character come full circle in S7 was rewarding.
Too bad they didnt even let him guest star in season 8 or like sent greetings or any apoligia that is myseriusly worded to the funeral. Or talk about darlys amazing speech before he had to go fast and offered his apologies. He could have een written in without being opresent you know.
@@marocat4749 With Murphy skulking around in the beginning it would even have made sense for him to make a guest appearance. Personally would’ve had him back in Episodes 1 & 22 at least.
All the girls had selfish moments include Prue she was cable take someone for granted like sisters did to Morris but I think Prue had affect on them that ground them bit and balance them if one of the sisters treat treat Morris like later did later season and rest wouldn't go along with it after Prue die the sisters became more selfish and use magic for personal gain When Prue was around even Prue herself misbave she had effect on trem to behave better The sisters lost bit mini mother figure when Prue die And it affect their behaviour
I think it's more a combination of Prue dying and what she went through with Cole making Phoebe develop a lot of bitterness and entitlement, and it's when she loses her powers that she gets knocked down to earth and becomes more like how she used to be
@@BetterWithBob please breakdown the bitterness and entitlement Phoebe has? Cause I don't see it. Phoebe emotionally went through more than anyone on the show. There's no entitlement or bitterness. She never stops helping the innocent, she does try and find a balance which is difficult which is something each sister has done. I am genuinely curious though where you find Phoebe entitled & bitter.
@@BlackGirlMarvel I think anytime a hero that's been painted as "selfless" for the better part of a series starts to chose themselves, they will always be labeled as selfish because choosing yourself is inherently a selfish act, but at some point you DO have to put yourself first and thats what happens with Phoebe
I feel as though it's ignored or glossed over how much the sisters did for him as well. They tried to protect him from the supernatural world but he wanted to be involved, Phoebe had to talk him out of taking the fall for Cortez to let him know he was their problem, Leo went to prison for him so that he could look good and get his promotion, Prue and Phoebe saved him from Emilio and the guardians, Phoebe helped him find Sheridan even though her disappearance benefitted them, they risked their lives to save his, Piper tried to break him out of jail, they saved him from evil universe Leo and Chris, and the many times they helped him catch a suspect or solve a case.
@@BetterWithBob While I agree with a lot of your takes and thoroughly enjoy your charmed videos I will slight disagree here , Most if the situation the charmed ones help Darryl is to help fix or cover up a previous situation or mistake . For example Leo allowing himself to be arrested only happened because of the amount of supernatural cases and you explained why Darryl didn’t want to leave prison and they did a pretty crap job at protecting from the supernatural world at times .
@@ThatCharmedLover93 it's funny because the words I used are an exact quote of Phoebe's from that episode, and people still think it's about personal gain lol. I was watching MegaReacts watch it, and the episode that follows is when she casts the smart spell, and he was talking about that
I loved Darryl. One of my favourite scenes is him asking Piper if she froze a crime scene and that she should not do that! Also, when finding out they are witches, he just does not want to know the intricasies, he only wants to know what is needed - a character development as he was sceptical each time Andy mentioned magic and witches in the first episode. I hated what they did to his character after the whole Barbarus trial and Inspector Sheridan. It also fascinated me that he told his wife about the sisters and she just accepted the fact that magic is real. It was nice seeing him again in the comics with powers and all, but I missed the real Darryl from season 6 onwards.
Now I have a neat little spin off in my head where Darryl figures out the local magic situation in his new East Coast town but he's wise and keeps his insight a secret and it takes the witches he's helping a whole season to realize it's not coincidence, he knows something and then season two starting with stress of is this actually a bad thing and definitely one of Darryl and Sheila's kids gets involved in magic....
Honestly, maybe the amount of screen time he got was perfect. Though I would have loved to see more of him, he was so good in the supporting role. I think that when he said something or we saw him on screen, it was special.
Can we also talk about the Inspector Sheridan problem? Imagine if they'd given us an episode exploring who she is, why she does what she does, maybe even have her as an innocent the girls need to protect, even if they didn't want to. We may have actually felt something for the character, but as written she's a cardboard cutout
I think Darryl suffers from the change in direction of the show. Early on, it was much more grounded in terms of storytelling and largely keeping keeping the supernatural world speculative. As they leaned more into this, it felt more and more that he wasn’t required week in week out. I think if they had given him just a touch more of an arc early on then it would have been harder for them to leave him behind. It’s a real shame because Dorian Gregory is a brilliant actor and deserved a more meat like we got later on. (And the lower decks idea is a fantastic concept and I am now angry they didn’t do it - so thanks for that haha!)
I wanted to throw double shade to that and The Craft sequel/reboot, because the other one is particularly amusing since the original technically had better representation than the 'woker' version.
What's most appalling is how casually dismissive the Sisters themselves are of Darryl. There's a quiet, implicit consensus that he's solely there just to help them. There's no gratitude. His outside life, that's another excellent point regarding the writing, but on daily rewatching, it's awful seeing how they just sort of use him, talk shortly to him, or talk down to him without appreciating his presence. I'm not saying Darryl should be praised -- not at all, but given his identity as the sole Black character playing a crucial role in their lives, it doesn't looking very charming.
Sometimes it felt that way but others it just seemed like "okay there's a job to do". When Phoebe tells Sheila about what happened, she's very understanding and empathic towards Darryl, and she had also insisted on taking the fall for what happened to Cortez so he wouldn't have to. In A Paige From the Past, Piper is more about trying to stop the ghosts as quick as possible before they hurt someone and ruin Phoebe and Cole's lives, and Prue tries to keep him out of danger all the time and he insists on going in anyway
@@BetterWithBob There’s always “a job to do” with them and it’s unfortunately not his responsibility to assist - it’s their own to execute their own purposes, with little regard to how this affects him as their sole connection to the mundane world. These singular examples provided are all well and good, but as a whole, in the fullest scope, it leaves much to be desired. It’s another example of how perspective and diversity needs to extend beyond just the actors to behind the scenes.
Charmed is not a soap opera. Giving everyone character too much attention will ruin the narrative and format of the show. The show worked because the fans are not the writers.
Darryl not being given more screen time & development is actually very significant to how the audience perceives him & his importance to the sisters. It's a pretty common short-hand in tv series that side characters of importance are given dedicated scenes even if it doesn't move the main plot along or entirely relevant to the main characters. This short-hand is even used in reality tv (think "randomly" focussing on contestants only for them to be eliminated or winning). The audience is forced to form a personal relationship by making that character appear as the main character for the moment & showing the world from their perspective. We never get to see the world of Charmed from Darryl's perspective. This makes it hard to believe that Darryl is all that important to the sisters even when they say he is. IMO any sympathy we have for Darryl is thanks to Dorian Gregory's talent. We're given these scenes with every other re-occuring side character so it's hard to not see this as racist. Audiences are not given the chance to empathise with the one black character.
I would have loved to have seen the slow decline of what Sheila started feeling about the sisters. Or the aftermath of him almost dying and how the whole family had to deal with a dark cloud over them. I also would’ve been happy with at least a picture at the end of Daryl and his family with them. they got this whole he’s family narrative but never actually treat him like family.
I know the picture thing was because the budget for the finale was so tight they couldn't use any of people not already appearing in the episode - they'd need a royalty to use their likeness. They technically couldn't afford Leo either, but a bunch of the cast and crew took paycuts to allow Brian Krause to appear
@@BetterWithBob I didn’t even think about that but you are right, I know that’s why we never saw Prue again so that makes sense. I just think there was a better way to incorporate him into the finale for a show that had a strong fanbase
@@AprilRose77 He could have been name checked at least for sure. I did read something re: Prue where Brad Kern says he was told they couldn't use pictures because they'd have to pay Shannen's per episode fee for them but later realised the network could have been lying and they just didn't want to still be promoting her.
I remember being so upset when he didn’t return for season 8 but his ending was in-tune with his character outside of the sisters. Darrell had every right to say no to the sisters about using his soul and other times. I wish there was an episode where the sisters took accountability for their actions and how it’s hurts other namely Darrell. As much as I love Charmed and series like it they definitely forget to hold the “heroes” accountable most times. Darrell is one my favorite characters in the show. I wish that we could have seen a lot more of that inner conflict and family conflict. Great video!!!
I mean, Phoebe does say that she felt horrible about what Darryl went through and doesn't demonise him for his choice. She also gets punished by being de-powered. The show is always holding them accountable, except for the Cole stuff
I loved this character. Personally, this was probably due to the fact that I could not keep my eyes off the actor when’re he appeared. Like. Every. Time. What a hunk - and those episodes where he wore tight sleeveless muscles shirts, *swoon*. Having got this off my chest, I enjoyed Darryl’s character development-what little there was- over the series. I wish we could have seen so much more of this actor(pun intended). Great video - I always enjoy your discussion! ❤
He is really handsome, I agree. But what I like more is that caring brotherly attitude and desire to help and save lives, that's what makes him the coolest character to me. Sisters have powers, he doesn't, yet he saved just as many lives as they did. He saved magical and non-magical beings (on his duty as a cop in non-magical cases) while being 100% mortal with 0 powers. In my oppinion that makes him more badass than any other character
Now taking about Darryl I actually wished that Prue and Darryl were a couple it would be perfect representation for mixed race couple out there specially for a white and black couples
I can see it between them but I do like there being a long running platonic friendship, showing men and women can just be friends without involving romance 🤔
Yeah I know but for me it just feels like it maybe the actors chemistry we to much for me and as well thinking about it I kinda wish it happen with Phoebe and Darryl or Paige and Darryl that would be cool
Right about the time he almost died for them, is when I lost respect for the sisters. Their entitlement behavior and ignoring his fears really pissed me off. Especially Paige. When she stole his soul after he said "NO" when they wanted to get into Valhalla and then when she got an attitude because he wasn't waiting by the phone at the station when she called and she couldn't find him because of the woman who she was helping got beat up by her ex..I was done. Phoebe telling him to get over the ordeal that happened to him after she confronts him outside at her friend's wedding, when he served her a warrant for Chris's arrest. Piper hanging up on him when he called needing answers of what was going on... Darryl wasn't being selfish. It's bad enough that his wife has to worry as a cop's wife, but then double that with worrying about the supernatural world killing him too. The audacity of the sisters getting mad at him for putting the needs to his family first, when they were willing to go above and beyond to protect each other...and especially when Chris was in danger. The man had to uproot his family to the East Coast just to get away from their demanding reach. After the Cleaners trial they should have decided to back off from using him anymore because of how much more dangerous things were getting and they wanted his wife and kids also out of harm's way and to make sure they didn't bring on Darryl's death and have to look his wife and kids in the eyes ever again...
Every single love interest Paige had was irritating, especially Kyle, whatever that Norman married guy was named and Richard. She was weirdly obsessed with Richard and for her to give up using magic to make him comfortable instead of pushing him towards getting it together and then dumping him when he does.
@@BetterWithBob I suppose it's possible that the writers had been setting up the idea that the charmed ones were becoming complacent and selfish over time but that could be me overthinking bad writing.
I wonder if it was to hint at how Wyatt was put on the path to turning evil in the future since at that point Gideon wasn't planned as the arc villain.
Darryl is my fourth favorite Character in Charmed he is probably the best honesty character in Charmed and that's why I feel like he deserves to be in the top 5 characters of the show for me
For me as a little Black boy who looooved Charmed, Darryl was SO important to see on screen. I very much loved his relationship/friendship with Prue after Andy died and the writers missed the opportunity to really get into their dynamic, but to be honest it seemed like the other sisters couldn't care less about him and how much he put his job at risk to help them and I never liked that! They really should've given him better character development and focused more on keeping the continuity of the show instead of throwing random new characters at us!
I regret to say I don't think I've seen Dorian Gregory in anything else, just Charmed. He really is an awesome actor, the variety that he brings to the role really kept Darryl fresh for the audience for all those years and all the rewatches. Fair dues.
I always enjoyed Darryl's character in this show. And I like your point at 17:50 "Darryl learns about the magic and then continues to do what he's always done - helping people."
One of the reasons I think why African American characters specifically seem "too perfect" occasionally, I think is done on purpose so the audience (whether racist, or not) can't having negative to say, or at least that's what they're aiming for. While this is Charmed and not an analysis on Guess Who's Coming to Dinner, in that film there were other reasons to question the relationship, such as how quick and sudden it is, where as their focus and shock was his race. The same can even apply to his parents meeting his white girlfriend. They're both adults and highly successful. Most parents number one dream back in the day was their daughter to marry a lawyer, or a doctor, and that is exactly what her parents got, but yet they were taken back by the announcement at first. I bring this up, because I always felt like Daryl was something similar, only as you stated was merely a "token" in this story, not a main character, and done simply to have more inclusion in the cast of characters and to use at their disposal. To be honest, I'm surprised they even introduced the concept of his wife, considering it seemed as if they only bring him on the show to use him only in reference to the sisters and nothing more, especially since Andy was out of the picture. If it weren't for Andy's inclusion in the beginning Daryl would have less scenes, or perhaps none at all and wouldn't have existed like he originally was. I kind of wonder what really inspired them to create this character (since he wasn't in the pilot) and if they intended him to really be this way, or it just unintentionally went in that direction. If Andy stuck around longer I wonder how the direction of Daryl would have went. I feel Daryl would have been kicked out of the last season regardless, since even Leo was not in a lot of the last season due to budget cuts. Another great video!
Dorian did say in an interview last year that they wanted a Mel Gibson-Danny Glover dynamic for Darryl and Andy, and then TW King just left for whatever reason - stories ranged from wanting to do soap operas instead, asking for more screen time and the writers not knowing what to do with him, or him and Shannen not getting on
@@BetterWithBob Thanks for letting me know a little more about what they were going with the cop duo. I didn't read that yet, but I've heard all kinds of mixed stories about TW King "leaving" the show and why, but didn't know about the origin of Daryl not existing, then existing suddenly and why. It's good to know they at least had an idea and it just fell through rather than this being their intention all along. Do you know if they ever thought about a spin-off initially if they were really popular? Kind of like, how Angel on BTVS eventually had his own show? I also felt like Daryl randomly coming in and giving information did seem like his had his "own show off screen" like you said, especially since some of his scenes just felt like a different vibe from a supernatural type of show. And it reminded me of when Angel would randomly show up on BTVS and because I didn't watch Angel at the same time I would be like, "What is he doing here?"
@@ThatCharmedLover93 Referring to the unaired pilot. Daryl wasn't in the unaired version of the pilot when the show was first created. The Andy we see in the show with Daryl also wasn't the original Andy in the unaired pilot either.
@@ThatCharmedLover93 I only brought it up, cause I was curious and asking the video maker if they knew why they didn't have him in the unaired pilot, but then suddenly he was added at the last minute in the official pilot. The person who made the video then answered my question as to what inspired them to create Daryl and what dynamic they were going for when it came to Andy and Daryl initially. It was simply a question of origin, which I think should be a topic be allowed to discuss. The OP of the video even talked and referenced the unaired pilot themselves (1:10) in this video, hence why I was even inspired to ask the question in the first place. I like Daryl as a character, was simply asking a question.
@@Rachel-xu4br From what I know, the unaired pilot was more of a proof of concept to pitch to the network and it wouldn't have aired anyway since it was only 25 minutes long. When the show was picked up, they reshot scenes to pad it out to 40 minutes and also accommodate recasting Andy and Phoebe's actors. I can only assume adding Darryl in was to provide a new source of conflict since Andy could find out about Prue and have another cop to hide things from, and likely to add some diversity since the WB was the hip young network at the time
Another great charmed video, it was really good in highlighting the high and low points for the character. Darryl never did feel like he was there for representation purposes purely which is great in retrospect. The attempt of a diverse charmed reboot really enraged me because to make the characters Afro Latina and not cast afro latinas was just a joke especially with how little speaking roles Latin people especially Afro Latin people have in film and television
It's also objectively sexist, treating the original Halliwells as interchangeable and too old to be the protagonists anymore, since ageism is a big industry problem too and that's something the original at least handled better (letting the mothers and grandmother be the heroes). The Craft sequel/reboot also sold itself on a more diverse cast, but none of the two WOC got much of anything, when Rochelle of the original was beloved because she had her own story and we knew exactly who she was (the issue was that there wasn't enough of her)
Darryl was very unerrared and underappreciated, but he was the glue that held the sisters together. However, his chemistry with Andy was really good and very brotherly. Any chance of an Andy review?
Now I really wanna see your perspective on Chris considering season 6 is such a strange season and, on a more personal level, Chris was always a favourite of mine
You give me a new retroactive appreciation. I got so unbelievably bothered by attitudes by the end of the series. BUT you point out some good complexities and remind me how hard even these depictions of characters were and how we don’t get them today much outside premium cable/streaming (not network primetime thats back to young and PG melodrama in neon filters).
I think the main problem with Chris' character (who I love, to be clear) is that the storyline they ended up going for with him is pretty clearly not what was originally planned. If they'd had a plan from the beginning he could have been written more consistently in terms of motivations, character, etc.
So in the midsts of the George Floyd protests in 2020, I randomly remembered there was an entire episode dedicated to the premise of a cop getting sentenced to execution for killing an unarmed civilian and spent the next several months trying to unpack that in tandem with the fact that the condemned cop was also the only regular black character. I still havent quite managed it haha
The only regular cop in the show was black 🙄. It has nothing to do with race. It was an episode to give Darryl more importance. If a random cop had been framed then it wouldn't have the same impact. The episode had an impact because it was Darryl, a regular character. Anyway, people will always make drama where it doesn't exist. 1) Darryl doesn't appear frequently? It's racism. 2) Darryl is given an entire chapter dedicated to him? It's racism. 🙄🙄🙄🙄
2nd hand plot show don't tell. Perfectly sums up the Darryl problem. Too much of his arc happens off screen. We didn't get to see why he and Sheila changed their minds about the sisters. It makes them seem all over the place.
First of all, I love this video, I love this character, and I’m so glad you did Justice towards Darryl Morris! It’s what he deserves! Second of all, at some point in the future, I would love to see video analyses of Piper, Phoebe, and Paige. You’ve done such an excellent job of examining the complexities of each character you’ve covered and I would love to see that for these characters whom I love and feel are overly criticized at times yet feel frustrated with their characterizations at certain points(Seasons 5 & 6 in particular)
You know I appreciate you examining the show as a fan and when I mentioned in another comment that I was skeptical about clicking on your videos is because I am obviously a super fan of the series and I get mad when someone trashes it. There's another channel on UA-cam which seems to have the opposite objective of yours, it exists solely to make fun of "charmed" the writing the characters etc. So when I watched a video of that channel I got angry and started attacking the creator. But then I took a deep breath and apologized. I just wanted to share that story 😅. But you are doing a great job.
@@BetterWithBob You immediately figured out 😉. I mean create a channel talking about your favourite shows and films, not just to bash things that other people like.
Is that these " Manic episodes in Charmed season..." videos? They sometimes show up in my "recommended"-videos, but I never wanted to watch these, since I would get angry, like you did, and probably would write a nasty comment 😂!
The newer cast members would be contracted as recurring rather than regulars, so they would be paid less. Kaley Cuoco was also younger and less famous so they could give her a lower salary too
The witches treated Darryl as one of those magical beings they conjured up. He put his life and career in danger for him, and they took him for granted constantly. Leo had more empathy for him than the sisters.
You know, that would actually be a great reboot idea, to have 3 series running simultaneously, in the same world: a magic school teen drama, charmed, and a demon/human buddy cop series in a supernatural world (darryl with cole)... And the mains from one having constant side kick appearances every once in a while
Darryl played off really well off his male counterparts. I loved his chemistry with Andy (even if he made fun of Andy's belief in the supernatural, he defended his buddy and partner against Internal Affairs and Rodriguez). He also played really well off Leo in All Halliwell's Eve, which had a funny reference to the succubus and a fun buddy adventure figuring out how to vanquish the grimlocks.
And I remember when he appeared with his wife Sheila when I saw this part as a kid and I was thinking who is she where did she come from so there wasn’t enough exclamation to these two couples backstory so something tells me Sheila character was not told because they were to focus on the main characters in the TV series so there was a issue with the script I think the writers and the producers and directors were lazy not to give Darryl and Sheila a story line and how did they met these couples But anyway the importance was the storyline and the main characters but it turns out the black cop 👮🏾♂️ Darryl He was just a psychic I need to help out this is it this is how they saw him so this is how I feel he was just like those superhero psychics only there to help out this is it we call you when you need help so this is what I feel like what they were doing the charmed ones but anyway he deserved better Dorian Gregory
Darryl was there to have a reason that the charmed ones had access where police would have stopped them in real life. He was thrown a bone every so often when they needed plot twists
I loved Darryl - he deserved to have gotten powers or something - his wife should’ve turned out to have been a witch too - that would’ve been a great add on
Something Wicca This Way *Comes* is the first episode. His last episode is Something Wicca This Way *Goes*. It was named similarly to the first episode in case it was the finale
Darryl was such a weird character to me. I didn’t mind him at all when he was on screen, in fact I did like him a lot, but I never questioned him or what his life was. I was actually very surprised when Sheila came along because I felt it was out of the blue. We didn’t get a first meeting, she just popped up like she had always been there. As for Darryl, I didn’t question when he was in the episode or when he wasn’t, I actually didn’t even notice that he wasn’t in season eight the first time I watched it, I really don’t know how I could not take notice. I guess Charmed has always been pure entertainment to me so I never questioned anything they gave me.
I checked the episode when she first appears. Paige says "Darryl's wife...she's cute", so I assume that's the first time the sisters are meeting her. It's just that the scene opens with Michelle Branch finishing her song, so they would have obviously been introduced earlier in the night
@@BetterWithBob they skimmed over it so much I didn’t even notice lol but there were a lot of characters that appeared out of nowhere, mostly the sisters’ friends, sometimes it looked like they had lots of friends but they never seemed to hang out with them. I guess a lot happened between episodes.
5:05 I've never once heard a criticism of Anita Sarkeesian that convinced me she was acting in "bad faith". I've heard some points she made that are highly debatable, but when creators dismiss her in the way you just did, it kind of makes me want to dismiss them.
To be honest the treatment of Daryl is up there with my least favorite part about the show (alongside the decline of Phoebe who became my least favorite character) for me I always saw their relationship with Daryl as one sided, Daryl cared more about the sisters than they did in comparison, at the very least he sacrificed more and didn't really get anything in return. What Season 6 did was highlight it, and tbh all of the sisters were pretty bad toward him, Prue less so. There are MOMENTS I do lke between Daryl and the Charmed Ones, such as Daryl and Prue talking about Andy together after his death, a few lines he has that shows his dedication to the sisters, like defending them against Inspector Cortez because of Prue dying. In fact it shocked me watching on reruns how little the sisters gave back. Daryl would be put in situations where tbh he should have lost his job, but none of that really comes into play until Sheridan tells Shelia. Now this isn't to say they don't care about him, they do obviously. But I feel like it paints a bad picture when 95% of the time his moments with them are ONLY when they need him to bail them out legally. Why by comparison Daryl constantly states how risky it is for his job and how his character was the resident "I don't wanna know" guy. It never felt like Daryl was apart of the group UNLESS he had to specifically be involved helping the Halliwell's with law related situations. Mostly to cover for them, and to not tell or inform Sheila is honestly bad on everyone's part, especially when Daryl was in situations that could have gotten him killed or at risk of losing his job, as unprofessional as Sheridan was, she did have a point iin regards to that conflict. though I will admit it really feels like a 180 for Sheila to suddenly be against the sisters, but I think it has to do with the fact that like Daryl her perspective was rarely explored on anything (even less so) The worst thing they ever did was when Phoebe and Paige stole his soul just to use him as pawn to fight Leo in Valhalla, completely dismissing Daryl's consent. In general, they just wasted Daryl's role as being the mortal friend, usually when superhero/supernatural shows have a character like this its to project a sense of normalcy or being the normal one by comparison, but we didn't get many scenes like that. For me, outside of a few brief moments in Season 7 I wish Daryl would've gotten more moments like All Halliwell's Eve where he's directly involved with the plot and actually felt part of the gang, he even spends the entire episode in the manor helping Leo fend off a Demon. It also feels like they just had him as a regular just to have a person of color!
Actually I found myself thinking "Darryl wtf is wrong with you" when rewatching A Paige From the Past. He was AOK to let Phoebe and Cole take the fall for crimes committed by ghosts possessing them, knowing there would be no way to exonerate them, and Piper is the one thinking of the bigger picture in that they have to stop Frankie and Lulu ASAP before someone actually gets killed
@@BetterWithBob That is a good point, perhaps this is worth considering upon rewatch, I will take a look at it. Regardless I DO like how there is a conflict where you can choose either side, I just believe Daryl's lack of involvement and the fact it felt more like he gave up more for them, made me feel bad for him.
Yeaaaah..... the whole black cop thing and the tokenism thing sucked. But I did like a lot of what they did with Darryl's character. And the ending for him was a good one. Even if, like you said, it would have been nice if he'd had more of his own storylines that we got to see.
@@BetterWithBob yes! Thank you. And the video is just perfect. It captures exactly what I thought about Darryl. I really, really missed him in season 8.
What baffles my beautiful blackness most of these white shows have a formula one black friend in the entire cast his wife doesn’t count she was barely seem she could of played in as a friend to piper who was also married with kids .
Charmed is one of those shows for me where I really enjoy the first season and the potential, but by season 5 I'm completely checked out. I think that's the best way I can describe everything with charmed. Great potential. Every character. Every plot. It's brimming with ideas and promise but always seems to miss the mark
I'm in the camp where I think the first two seasons are 'fine', where the concepts are good if the execution is lacking, then it hits its stride by the 3rd and 4th, which are just near flawless. Season 5 sees a slip but there's still an enjoyable fun aspect. 6 is tiresome for me but picks up steam towards the finale. 7 and 8 feel like damage control and injecting new life into the show to me.
@BetterWithBob your passion for the show really shines through in your videos and that's why I like watching them. Hoping to gain a new appreciation through your thoughts for the series as a whole
That'll be interesting to explore, since I actually quite like the direction he evolves in Seasons 6 and 7 but I'm starting to see that it's not too popular among some fans
@@BetterWithBob it was not my favorite, Leo and Piper are my OTP and teen me was not happy to see them apart every week, also would love your thoughts about Leo representing the male nurturing side, this is probably the origin of my favorites thrope of having the main couple represent 2 aspects of the divine masculine and the divine feminine P&L as mother earth and Heavenly father "shiva and parvati" not sure if it's culturally accurate or culturally appropriate but it's my trash, I Love it ❤️ 🦝 🗑️🦝 ❤️
@@CarmenJonnes06 I only copped to how interesting it was to have Leo be the healer, caregiver and 'heart' - the most traditionally feminine role - and still be shown as powerful and important. Overall, the show was great at showing both sides and how a strong couple needs to have both their perspectives validated before they can come together to solve things (like in Siren Song). A good chunk of 2000s shows just went with the rather backhandedly insulting 'the woman is always right' message whenever a couple had an argument
I loved Darryl! But he did often feel plucked out of a different show with how they handled his character. I thought he played off the sisters and their men very well. It’s a shame they didn’t write him more coherently.
I think Darryl deserved to become whitelighter more than Brody did
Ooh I like that theory
Darryl is one of my favourite characters and it is still possible for him to become a whitelighter as he hasn't died yet when he does he will be a prime candidate to become one. Darryl has been touched by magic and magic will always find him. Also I always consider the true end of Charmed is "something wicca this way goes" as the show first episode was "something wicca this way comes" Darryl starts and ends the show.
@@legendofold101 you are right. It can still happen
@@BetterWithBob It is a pretty good theory about Darryl he should I become a white lighter or an avatar or he should’ve compete against Leo if he was her one of the magical person in the TV series he would’ve done good in the world it was too bad they not give him more storyline more than a cop 👮🏾♂️ I watch the time when I was a kid back then and I know for a fact I had some attachment to the sisters the three of them but if the writers would have gave him a great story line he would’ve done more like saving the world if he had supernatural powers if he was a white lighter and an avatar he would have change the world and do good and helped the Holliwels
I wish Darryl Would’ve done more everyone would have been a fan of him but he did not get better storyline and lot of scenes was cut and it was a disappointment I feel like Charmed was never inclusive enough when it’s about black character I remember there was a black cat he had a mistress and he lived with a black woman and then when he turned into a human he killed the witch that was black of course she was a black woman a woman of colour “ and you also had the Seer I feel like there was a difference between her and the other Seer so I feel like black characters are misleading in charmed like the chief police officer from Francisco Darryl
Darryl he is my favourite character also but he hasn’t had enough credit if they gave him a good storyline to become a white lighter or an avatar he would have been in the same position as Leo but there was another Officer in charmed name Kyle the elders Made him a white lighter so he was the only police officer that got turned into a white lighter so this is interesting why Darryl she never got enough credit and why the scenes were cut with his wife Sheila and his kids he had two boys
And I heard that he always knew the girls the three of them were witches so this is strange I feel like his character was very misguided and mislead it
We were denied the opportunity to see what a buddy cop show with Dorian Gregory and Julian McMahon would have been like.
They had great chemistry in that episode and bounced off each other very well in those two scenes. It could have been comedy gold lol
It wished they had a spinoff
Exactly that would have been interesting… I liked Daryl and Andy.❤
@@gillysummerss I love Cole and I'm upset with that. He was cool enough as is 😎
I actually have a problem watching season 8 on rewatches because it doesn't feel like Charmed without him.
Would've been cool if there was a Daryl episode where the girls do their usual but it's from his pov. Great video ❤
Thank you!
Holy shit I’ve never been more mad to not get an episode of TV in my life now that I know it could’ve been real.
Yes, that would have been awesome. I was literally thinking this while watching the video. Daryl is a great character but as someone who is been on the show as so long, it would have been nice to delve more into him and from his perspective.
I'm just happy he and his family made it out alive
Eh Charmed wouldn't have killed him off I don't think. It wasn't the type of show to just kill a main character for shock value unless it served the story
@@BetterWithBobPrue, kidding 😂
It added a definite shock us all but I'm come to realize her removal kept the show fresh, rather I or others liked it not.
Yeah I love prue and darryl relationship
Yeah the scenes between them were nice
Mentions in the show's finale are all about the Halliwell-Bennett family.
Lol if S8 had more of a budget Sheila coulda been like "takin the kids, bye" and Paige could help pick up the pieces
I hated that darryl was written out of the show after season 7
Henry was a version of andy done right. Why was he that bad at his job
It always bugged me how Sheila seemed to do a complete 180 on how she felt about the sisters and him helping her. I understand that it put him in danger a lot of times, and that was likely how she got to that point. But as you said, they never SHOW it happen, so it just seems jarring when she changes her viewpoint
I understand Sheridan probably intimidated her but it was so jarring
Lol I actually don't remember noticing the jarring difference at the time. There was so much space btw the 2 episodes.
Plus I try to memory hole most things about S6 anyway so... 🤷🏾♂️
They were constantly putting Darryl in jams though. Family or not, it gets old after a while.
I dont undertand Sheila's chracter at all. She seems supportive at first but one particular thing that happens. Shliela should have been gotten Darryl back on track with the sisters. Also where did this character came from?
@@TCt83067695 it is more noticable now when binge watching as opposed to before when there would be a week between episodes
The way they downgraded him to Morris after he refused to help them tells you everything about Darryl’s place in their life.
I mean they even took his soul without his permission, selfish brats lol
Always thought it was odd how they referred to him alternately as Darryl or Morris even when they knew him for years
The soul episode was my biggest "they don't even respect him or what he's already done" moment.
I didn't even take notice of it myself until I started researching for this video
Prue would've never let those girls treat him like that in the later seasons!!
Not sure about that. She was very selfish at points as well and had an ends justify the means attitude if an innocent was involved
All the girls had selfish moments include Prue she was cable take someone for granted like sisters did to Morris but I think Prue had affect on them that ground them bit and balance them if one of the sisters treat treat Morris like later did later season and rest wouldn't go along with it
after Prue die the sisters became more selfish and use magic for personal gain
When Prue was around even Prue herself misbave she had effect on trem to behave better
The sisters lost bit mini mother figure when Prue die
And it affect their behaviour
Darryl deserved better then what he got . Especially since he helped the charmed one so many time .
I'd love to see a video on Phoebe's empathy and how unnecessary it was.
Oh there will be a Phoebe problem video eventually lol
and annoying. and very ironic concidering how unempathetic Pheobe became in later seasons

@BetterWithBob I know!!! It gives me a good laugh everytime. 🤣
@@BetterWithBobOh, really 😂! That's funny! Do you happen to know who did this, I would love to watch it 😅!

Dorian Gregory says he felt that Darryl always knew and was just waiting for the sisters to tell him
The main Darryl problem is there is not enough Darryl
You speak no lies
Now I have a neat little spin off in my head where Darryl figures out the local magic situation in his new East Coast town but he's wise and keeps his insight a secret and it takes the witches he's helping a whole season to realize it's not coincidence, he knows something and then season two starting with stress of is this actually a bad thing and definitely one of Darryl and Sheila's kids gets involved in magic....
I think the comics have Billie watching over him and his family too
@@BetterWithBob sorta random as she doesn't know him...but okay
"Write good characters." Yes.
Tis the way lol
Honestly, maybe the amount of screen time he got was perfect. Though I would have loved to see more of him, he was so good in the supporting role. I think that when he said something or we saw him on screen, it was special.
Ooh that's an interesting perspective
Can we also talk about the Inspector Sheridan problem? Imagine if they'd given us an episode exploring who she is, why she does what she does, maybe even have her as an innocent the girls need to protect, even if they didn't want to. We may have actually felt something for the character, but as written she's a cardboard cutout
I kinda like her as is. There to be disliked and get killed because of it
It's never really explained why she dislikes them, I get they are linked to a lot of cases but she had pure hatred
Can't wait for this episode. Love Charmed and love all your videos!!
😊😊😊
Yeah it was definitely designed for the procedural format early on and then they kinda drifted away from that in Season 2
The shade to the reboot is what I subscribed for 🤣
I wanted to throw double shade to that and The Craft sequel/reboot, because the other one is particularly amusing since the original technically had better representation than the 'woker' version.
I agree it definitely was an issue for me watching the show as a black kid
The show is always holding them accountable, except for the Cole stuff
the actor is very good and the character was ok for most of the season and had some great moments.
15:44 I just noticed how comedic Dorian's walk was at that moment. :D
@@bojanabujosevic7849 Very well said :)
Now taking about Darryl I actually wished that Prue and
Darryl were a couple it would be perfect representation for mixed race couple out there specially for a white and black couples
This seems like such a weird pairing lol him and any of the sisters. I never saw that kind of chemistry between them.
I always in my head thought of Darryl as older, even though he was probably the same age as Prue
Respectfully disagree. That was his bro girl. Trust that writing has the potential for all kinds of stereotypes and racist strikes.
Honestly, I really liked episode with him because they feel like cop dramas... but with magic!
Yeah it seems as though that's what Season 1 was first envisioned as
Omg this took me back! I forgot how much I hated inspector Sheridan 🤭
The sisters didn't get mad at him. They understood his position and Phoebe says this to Sheila, saying he needs time.
Every single love interest Paige had was irritating, especially Kyle, whatever that Norman married guy was named and Richard. She was weirdly obsessed with Richard and for her to give up using magic to make him comfortable instead of pushing him towards getting it together and then dumping him when he does.
Nate was Norman Reedus's character
@@BetterWithBob thank you 💗 I couldn't remember his name as I was typing.
Darryl almost died by the very supernatual world he tried to protect. That council was about to off him due to the sisters negligence.
Taking Darryl's soul was completely out of line on the charmed ones part. Not even to save Leo.
Yeah, not sure what the writers were smoking there
@@BetterWithBob I suppose it's possible that the writers had been setting up the idea that the charmed ones were becoming complacent and selfish over time but that could be me overthinking bad writing.
I wonder if it was to hint at how Wyatt was put on the path to turning evil in the future since at that point Gideon wasn't planned as the arc villain.
@@BetterWithBob That would have made for a more interesting story than Gideon trying to kill Wyatt.
Darryl is my fourth favorite Character in Charmed he is probably the best honesty character in Charmed and that's why I feel like he deserves to be in the top 5 characters of the show for me
Daryl was a character with so much potential but bny the time S7 came, it was clear the sisters and the show treated him like a doormat.
yup!
Fair dues.
I saw him in a small role in Deliver Us From Eva, another modern version of The Taming of the Shrew
@@BetterWithBob ooh thank you Bob, I'll definitely check it out ❤️ you're the best!
@@shanwild1096you literally can look it up on Google
This is so true... Darryl's character arc was literally "plot device"
Sometimes yeah
Darrly should have had a story arch of his own
I always enjoyed Darryl's character in this show.
Ooh that's got potential. On House of Halliwell, they seem to think the character didn't age well
Now I really wanna see your perspective on Chris considering season 6 is such a strange season and, on a more personal level, Chris was always a favourite of mine
Thank you kindly :)
You should do a video on Chris
One day sure
My thoughts exactly when I was rewatching. Like “Of course the only cop ever held accountable for murder is black”
It would have been nice to see a Daryl-centric episode that just focused on him and how he's dealing with covering up the "Unexplained cases".
I suppose Little Monsters and the mummy episode did give us something like that but those were just B-plots
Thank you for watching 😊
I think Phoebe will be getting one next cos there's plenty to talk about there 😬
@@BetterWithBob Yes!! I already can’t wait for that one!
Oh is that Alison Pregler? Yeah I tend to avoid former Channel Awesome creators like the plague 😂
@@BetterWithBob You immediately figured out 😉. I mean create a channel talking about your favourite shows and films, not just to bash things that other people like.
@That Charmed Lover that's the channel. It made me not want to watch anything "charmed" related on UA-cam out of fear I would get mad 🙄
Is that these " Manic episodes in Charmed season..." videos? They sometimes show up in my "recommended"-videos, but I never wanted to watch these, since I would get angry, like you did, and probably would write a nasty comment 😂!
@That Charmed Lover of course I see that he's a true fan.
Back when a season lasted 22 episodes instead of the 8 to 10 we get now.
One of my favourite characters on the show. Top-2 at least.
We were supposed to see Daryl as selfish for telling the sisters to "fuck off" because ...
Great video, I always look forward to seeing your channel pop up when I open UA-cam.
Aww many thanks ^_^
I hate the budget cut excuse... they cant use that AND bring in multiple new cast and force them into the story where they werent needed
The newer cast members would be contracted as recurring rather than regulars, so they would be paid less. Kaley Cuoco was also younger and less famous so they could give her a lower salary too
Well done! Good analysis of the character and how he impacted the show. I appreciate your commentary about tokenism. Spot on. 👏👏👏
Thank you for watching 🙂
The witches treated Darryl as one of those magical beings they conjured up. He put his life and career in danger for him, and they took him for granted constantly. Leo had more empathy for him than the sisters.
I love that the last scene season 7 finale, usually the door of the charmed manor, ends with Daryl.
Yeah that's a nice touch
Darryl was the homey I could not stand agent Brody
Darryl should have gotten more story lines. He helped them so much and the charmed ones just used him.
You know, that would actually be a great reboot idea, to have 3 series running simultaneously, in the same world: a magic school teen drama, charmed, and a demon/human buddy cop series in a supernatural world (darryl with cole)...
And the mains from one having constant side kick appearances every once in a while
This video got me man crushing on you. My bad. Thank you for this.
I added your Twitter. You look like a model.
And I remember when he appeared with his wife Sheila when I saw this part as a kid and I was thinking who is she where did she come from so there wasn’t enough exclamation to these two couples backstory so something tells me Sheila character was not told because they were to focus on the main characters in the TV series so there was a issue with the script I think the writers and the producers and directors were lazy not to give Darryl and Sheila a story line and how did they met these couples
But anyway the importance was the storyline and the main characters but it turns out the black cop 👮🏾♂️ Darryl He was just a psychic I need to help out this is it this is how they saw him so this is how I feel he was just like those superhero psychics only there to help out this is it we call you when you need help so this is what I feel like what they were doing the charmed ones but anyway he deserved better Dorian Gregory
I always found Darryl to be adorable
I can see it lol
Now that I’m older, Daryl was fine.
He was very attractive!
Kinda wish Daryl was single and he and Prue developed into something. That could have been an interesting relationship
I had no idea Prue/Darryl was such a popular ship lol
Is it? I hope so!
"I don't wanna know...I don't wanna know." "SHADDUP DARRYL! YOU'RE NOT AS IMPORTANT AS ME, THE PHOEBE ONE!" "Aw, maaaaan...."

@@BetterWithBob Alison Preggler's "Charmed" reviews.
@@RedDragonM1 Ah, I see. Never watched her stuff
We love Darryl!❤
My detective skills are failing me, I’ve been searching for over an hour, what is the show at 6:43 please?
Once upon a Time
Darryl was there to have a reason that the charmed ones had access where police would have stopped them in real life. He was thrown a bone every so often when they needed plot twists
I loved Darryl - he deserved to have gotten powers or something - his wife should’ve turned out to have been a witch too - that would’ve been a great add on
Hmm Sheila as a witch? I kinda like that idea
I agree!
The more I hear about season 7 trying its best to repair the damage, the more I like it.
Man, I appreciate this review of the show and I agree with your take. We could’ve have gotten more on Dorian for sure.
Thank you :)
Daryl was definitelyTOKEN. But his character worked because of the generous, compassionate, competent perspective he brought to the role.
Darryl was fine!
If I’m not mistaken something Wicca this way goes was the first episode in the series you said that was the last time we saw him
Something Wicca This Way *Comes* is the first episode. His last episode is Something Wicca This Way *Goes*. It was named similarly to the first episode in case it was the finale
I loved Darryl and was angry and sad that they started using Darryl just to keep theyre secret he was my mums favorit charater to
Darryl was such a weird character to me.
Darryl is a Hufflepuff, and that is a compliment!
Ah, finally I'm able to watch it! Why was this day so much trouble while this video was already here? 😐
Anyway, I'm hyped!
Aww hope everything's all g ^_^
@@BetterWithBob yes! Thank you. And the video is just perfect. It captures exactly what I thought about Darryl. I really, really missed him in season 8.
What baffles my beautiful blackness most of these white shows have a formula one black friend in the entire cast his wife doesn’t count she was barely seem she could of played in as a friend to piper who was also married with kids .
Id rather have a darryl as a new york cop than the reboot we did have 😂
HATED that they got rid of him. Loved him and andy

This is completely off topic, but did anyone know Greg Vaughn, the actor who played Dan, is currently engaged to Angie Harmon?
He left the show
Charmed is one of those shows for me where I really enjoy the first season and the potential, but by season 5 I'm completely checked out.

Love your character focused videos, please do a Leo one!
