  • Weight Watchers (WW) ads are everywhere. They seem desperate to get new users to sign up to fill in the gaps of the disenchanted who have quit. A new study pits Weight Watchers against KETO in a head-to-head randomized trial of their diet apps. The results weren't even close!
Don't waste your time, effort, and money on a diet that leaves you hungry and lets you down...

My friend and I started our diets at the same time almost 3 years ago. She went WEight watchers and I did Keto. Both of us have underlying medical problems. She has RA and others I have Hashimoto’s. She lost weight faster at first. I gained BUT was healing my body. In the last 2 3/4 years since then she has had many more health problems pop up and gone to many many more doctors. We have lost almost the same amount of weight since then and my Hashimoto’s has improved and (knock on wood) I haven’t gained anymore auto-immune diseases!! I get to eat bacon and eggs EVERYDAY for lunch for almost 3 years she eats salads and spray margarine(because it is zero points). I have lost weight, gained knowledge and am working on healing my body!! Love it!!

I had extreme lower back pain and very close to losing most mobility and 3XL clothes were starting to not fit me... This is why I started Keto. I was about to cross a point of no return with my weight. Ive done pretty clean strict keto, I got all the nasty oils and inflammatory stuff out of my diet completely. I am now able to do 45 minutes of fast pace walking every single day, which is about 2 and half miles. When I get down to 300, Im going to incorporate some Low Impact Cardio routines every morning and do my walking in the evening. 3XL clothes are now baggy on me and Im hoping by labor day ill be in 2XL... My over-all goal is 240 and at some point add in weight training. The anti-inflammatory benefits of KETO is changing my life. Even if I go back to a more low carb/Low Fat/ Calorie deficit way of eating after my weight loss, ill be eating much cleaner and really watching the ingredients I put into my body. Only been doing this 4 months but ive went from not being able to hardly walk 100 yards without severe pain to now being able to do 2 and half miles without stopping....its been a miracle that I found this diet. Great study! I had tried WW several times always with hopes that I could stick to it and reach my weight loss goal, but it never worked for me! Undoable. Just undoable. Four years ago I tried keto for the first time and what a change. Eventually after the first couple of months I started IF and the weight just melted away. I ended up losing 43 pounds in 9 months. I am currently mostly ketovore-carnivore. The weight is still off. My goal is to continue to add more lean muscle mass and to change my body composition by continuing to eat ketovore-carnivore and lifting heavy. So far, it is going great!

I was seriously hungry all the time and "maintenance" was not going to be much better. I gained it all back plus more. How depressing! The good news is that now, at age 50 (and perimenopausal), I have lost 31 pounds in 3 months pretty effortlessly and I am satisfied and satiated ALL THE TIME. Some of the models are more carb conscious than others. You have to restrict the bread and the fruit. And stay away from their snack foods. But yes it’s easy, cheap, the app is user friendly and weighing in regularly really helps.

I’ve been on a Weight Watchers program on and off for almost 40 years until I discovered keto……you are half right Dr Berry..it didn’t start 30 years ago..……Weight Watchers started in 1960 by Jean Nidetch (I read her book) I knew my grandmother had gone to weight watchers in the early 1970s and she had lost weight…..I started in 1974, I was 19 and at that time 20 -25 lbs overweight……according to that archaic weight chart they’ve had for decades…….That program was in a brochure type booklet….it was pink and easy to follow…$1-2 a meeting…but not exactly keto they did allow you 2 slices of bread a day for women 3 slices a day for men …no bacon…but absolutely no processed sugar….
Jean Nidetch received her weight loss program from a hospital in New York..and started a support group in her apartment basement for people who wanted to lose weight, now fast forward to 1977 when she sold her WW business to the Heinz co….!!!!L they turned into a money making machine …….the diet drastically changed and now you could have that sliver of cake or pie!!! Oh come on now…..no one can eat a sliver of anything with sugar in it…I want the whole cake or pie! Weight Watchers now is designed to for you to fail, bc Heinz knows that you’ll have to restart over & over$$$$ it took me years to figure out what they were doing……I lost a total of 40lbs following that complicated program but always gained it back…..unsustainable!

I *had* to count calories to lose and then maintain weight loss. After four years I decided if I was going to be doing counting I may as well eat foods I missed. First two weeks on WW I lost almost nine pounds, all by counting points. I think before people trash talk something they should have experience with it. Make an informed decision.

Congratulations, you've discovered the universal truth about human nutrition. Regardless of the style of eating you choose, to burn fat you have to run a calorie deficit. There's no two ways about it. The elephant in the room is that fasting is the ultimate method for running a calorie deficit, and nobody in the low carb community will talk about it. They act as if it's magic and it's not.

I joined Weight Watchers in 1971 before it became corporatized and was very successful on it. Of course, I was 20 years old and still metabolically healthy. I revisited the original WW food plan after I started keto just to compare. Original WW included milk, bread (in limited quantity), and fruit. Other than the bread, there were no grains, no starches, and no sugars except what occurred naturally in the fruit. I ate liver once a week, fish 5 times a week, and red meat 3 times a week. Dinner was six ounces of protein -- very satisfying. The only thing I wonder about is if we were getting all the essential fatty acids we needed because no added fat was allowed. In hindsight the artificial sweeteners were probably not a good idea in the long run, because they kept our taste for sweets alive and well. I estimated that the daily carb level was about 90g. That would never work for me today, not after a lifetime of eating the Standard American Diet and wrecking my metabolic health. But it worked great for a 20yo, and probably still would. But that's not what they market today. Today it's "eat whatever you want, just count the points." That is not a recipe for success. On keto I have lost 70 pounds, my HbA1c is optimal (no idea what it was before), and I wake up each day with the energy to walk 5 miles!

WW is always analyzing the data they collect on each participant's progress and they change their plan accordingly, at least to some extent. So, I caved. Went off the rails and gained 29lbs back. I got a promo email from WW and decided to sign up. I have been doing WW for a month and have only lost 1lb and I'm starving! I compared my WW points against calories and I'm consuming under 1200 calories a day and the scale isn't moving. I'm seriously considering going back to keto and just avoiding the ketofied sweet treats.

I've been trying Keto for a couple months and I've already went from 233 to 213 lbs (I'm a 6'1 male) with limited exercise. My initial goal is 170 at the same muscle mass. The reason I've limited non-aerobic exercise is that I want to make sure I don’t get famished and then overeat.
Once I'm fat adapted, with a higher metabolism that can support the increased energy expenditure (without crashing after a workout like I used to) I'll increase my workouts as my metabolism leads. I want my metabolism to guide my exercise level.
After I reach ~15% body fat I'll focus on muscle definition and hopefully won't have the effects of glycogen depletion.

Although I do IF (intermittent fasting) alternating with OMAD (one meal a day both very eas for me) I suspect my over confidence having lost 13 kilos (roughly 26 pounds) and regular wine or occasional gin and tonic has interfered with reaching a ketogenic state, let alone autophagy. It is easy for me to cut out the obvious carbs (grains, potatoes etc) but those in wine etc not so easy. We have great wines here in Spain! LOL! Plus, lately I think I have been eating tooo much protein in addition. I feel I was much more aware and careful when I first started the keto way about 3 years ago. Perhaps similar is happening with you...too much protein or carbs sneaking into the daily plan?

@@misottovoce lol! Pretty sure I don't have a prostate problem! It's short for Psoriatic Arthritis. I don't have any sneaky carbs that I can think of. I never drink and am very careful to not eat carbs because they make the inflammation so much worse. I hope you are well and enjoying the summer! Spain is beautiful! I enjoyed visiting years ago. I'm old now but remember my time there fondly! Thanks for your reply.

Annalee, I also love salads, and vegetables. But as crazy as it sounds on the surface maybe you need to really cut back on even those carbs. That’s why I say I do low carb not keto. I think I eat too many vegetables for keto. But for me that’s good for now. I think our bodies need something different at different times. For you maybe you should jump start yourself again and cut way down on the vegetables. Doesn’t mean a lifetime. See what happens. Of course with intermittent fasting. Dr Westmen is another keto dr I listen to, along with Berg and others. Get as much information as you can and see what your body needs in this moment. Blessings. 🌻🌎🐱🌹

@@misottovoce your post could be mine. I just don’t want to give up my daily wine. After all, I am 90 years old and how much time do I have left. You can’t give up everything. I eat very well and some days it is just meat and eggs. I do take a few supplements including d3 and k2. Also astaxanthin and black seed oil. Some others like b vitamins. I never get sick but I do get tired. Old age for sure does that.

It's funny that you posted a video about this. These are the two diets I'm considering. My doctor didn't recommend IF for me. She said that would make my insulin resistance worse.

If you don't try IF you wil never know. Start 16/8 then your body will tell you when you can move to 17/7 and befor you know it you will be 20/4 with eating only during 4 hours window.

Unless your doctor can explain that hypothesis, I'd consider a new doctor. How could reducing your insulin production and giving your body a break from those demands make your insulin resistance worse? The logic doesn't hold, unless there's a different underlying problem.

Keto is legit, no doubt. I've been ketovore now for two years and I can personally attest to its authenticity and potency. No argument here. However, I'm also discovering that macros are important to monitor, and adjust portion sizes accordingly, at least for me anyway. As I approached and maintained my body's healthy natural weight, while still on ketovore and consuming 2kcal per day, I experimented with eating slightly larger portions of meat (additional 500 calories), while maintaining the regular and consistent serving sizes of my usual salad (control). After approximately two months, my body weight increased eight pounds..I also felt a little sluggish. Now I'm back to a strict 2kcal diet, ketovore, and my body weight dropped and energy returned. Just sharing to help others who might be struggling with the weight and energy.

Women are different than men and that absolutely must be taken into account. Our hormones or lack of them most definitely affect keto experiences.

@@raven-keeper Right. I'm male, however, and portion size has absolutely proven to be in direct relationship to my weight and energy. The advice of "eating until we're comfortably full" is far too vague and open to many different interpretations. For me, whether I'm keto, ketovore or carnivore: macros (i.e. calories) absolutely matter.

I swore by ww, I did ww approx 20 years ago and did lose weight, after 3 children it was my go to to lose weight... I tried following WW (the newer method) and was starving and weight didn't budge... I found my old stuff and used that.... would lose 1lb then regain it the following week... I didn't budge at all.... I started Keto following a specially formulated meal plan, just over 9 weeks ago after following you for approx 2 to 3 years.... so now here goes my results... I'm down to prepregnancy weight... having not been so in 16 years!!! I have lost 12lb and 11inches, all over, my hormone imbalance is balancing out, I don't experience severe mood swings around my cycle, I've been perimenopausal for 13yrs. Initially starting keto I was scared with how much calories I'd be eating.... it was double what ww was giving me... Keto works. Now I'm doing Keto Cycling and I'd never look back.

My sister is WW and she's been trying to get me to do it with her. Last time I did WW, I was constantly starving, tired, and completely bored with the food I could eat. I eat less on keto because it's more filling, plus I'm learning more about nutrition and what my body needs for health.

I tried WW a long time ago. I HATED it. I was hungry all the time and constantly thinking about food. You have to plan your meals and weigh or measure everything while trying to figure out how many points everything is. It was awful!
BTW, the lady that originally started WW based her diet on the ADA diet and was really trying to improve her health. Too bad we've been lied to for so long about diet and health. I finally came to the conclusion that to understand why they lie you have to follow the money. For instance, milk does a body good is something we were taught from marketing dairy. It's about money! They convince you it's about health but that's because health advertising sells. The government does the food groups and food pyramids. These are produced by the Department of Agriculture. For health? No way. It's about how funds will be paid out to farmers for what they produce. Politicians vote based on who donated to their campaigns or who votes for them in their districts. It's about money and getting re-elected.

I joined weight watchers after gaining a lot of weight through my pregnancy and even afterwards. I lost 70lbs in 4 months. I was very happy, obviously. But I got diagnosed with Graves’ disease. They we not able to manage that through medicine so I had a total Thyroidectomy. I gained 100 lbs. I was miserable. I now am feeling better than ever on a keto diet paired with IF.

I know this question has probably been asked and answered before, but I haven't yet found it.
Years ago l had a section of my colon removed because of a horrendous case of diverticulitis. It was completely successful and vastly improved the quality of my life. The only lasting side effect has been a little bit of constipation. This diet works for me, however, the constipation problem quickly becomes unmanageable and I am eventually forced to add the carbs back in.
What can I do about this...and should I expect my system to eventually acclimate?
