Dan - my combs and brush are in dire need of a cleaning, this is on my to-do list This is how I have cleaned my brush in the past, so it's good to hear I've been doing it correctly
For anyone who's brush his stinking after you wash it. It's because it's natural boar hair. I'm a wet shaver as well as a beard enthusiast and I have owned several bore brushes that I use to lather up my soap to shave with. Every bore brush I've ever owned it takes several washes to get that smell out. Horsehair , boar's hair and Badgers hair all can smell like animal after you wash it the first few times.
Seen an old gorge bruno video on how to do it and this video reminded me I haven't in a while. And u reminded me how to wash a brush again lol gonna try to keep up with more cleanings in the future. Thanks for the reminder and teaching great and simple vid.
Glad you made this video. I have a lot of eczema underneath my beard so I get a lot of dead skin build up in my brush because of the balm on the bristles. Thanks for the easy guide bro.
Thanks for posting this, so easy and straightforward. Only question is what type of wash do you use? Beard shampoo? Face wash? Dish soap? Never heard of the stuff you use in the video.

Great brush, possibly the best for the money. If you love that brush and were looking for something bigger (like double the size), check out the Zeus first cut boar beard brush. Both are made in Germany, so I bet they're made in the same place - just the Zeus one is massive.
@@DanCBearded Hey Dan, I'm doing great and I hope you are as well. Just got home today from a 45 day RV trip up in Maine . Bounced all around. I live in New York. Anyway, I haven't been watching and participating in much UA-cam beard content ever since I botched up my beard and shaved it off. I want to grow it back long again but I'm not looking forward to the awkward stage of about 2 -3 months of looking pretty scraggly. I'm actually 2 weeks in right now thinking I'm gonna go for it but I might give in and keep it a short beard. I've been through that about 3 or 4 times already. But I actually bought the Tomahawk for the mustache thinking that I'm gonna grow it back . I ordered it while I was away I didn't open it yet. I do plan on growing it back just not sure when. Hopefully the one I have now will keep growing. Thanks for asking about me my friend. You have the best beard content out there. And of course one of the best beards. Learned a lot from you too. 😎👊🏻
I have seen some people show this cleaning and dry it with a hair dryer and also seen them put the shampoo directly on the brush and rub it in are those things okay and thanks for the tips sir
Hey Dan, I am new here and kind of enjoyed your content. I see you mentioned the frequency of wash as 3-4 times a year. What about the boar bristle brush used for hair? How often should we wash that? It will really be helpful to me if you can guide me on that. Thanks in advance 😊

Once a month is a really good goal to have. If you slip and go a few times a year, you would be perfectly fine. The comb is more important to have frequent cleanings
You’ve been reading my mind with some of these videos... THIS MORNING, I was brushing my beard and thought to myself, “I wonder what DanC does to clean his brushes and combs...?” 🤔 still love the content brotha!
Coming back to this video to brush up on the timings and such (no pun intended) but thought of a couple of questions: about how often/at what stage would you recommend cleaning the brush? And how long before you replace a brush entirely?
Great vid. Thanks for telling me bout this vid. Another dumb question but what exactly is a wash and co wash. Lastly how often do you do this cleaning process 👍
I have a boar's hair hairbrush and I follow these steps when I clean it, though there is still remaining residue and dirt really deep down between the bristles. I ever have a little tool to clean it and I can never seem to get it all. Thoughts?
Might just be more time/cost effective to buy a new one at that point. These are animal products and can be really tough to work with. I completely understand!
Hi I agree with dan. At some point there may be fewer option. I cleaned the brush like he did in this video. I used a high powered blower to clean mine but I’ll mention you can keep a clean and non clean brush. Meaning one is shower clean and the other you can use in the car. Like a spare brush
Thank you for the info. I’ve been wondering how to clean my boars hair brush. 1 question I do have is about my plastic brush. I have 1 with natural bristles that I keep in bathroom and 1 with plastic bristles that I keep in my truck. Do you perform the same process with plastic brush as you would with natural brush?
I love your channel and have found your videos very helpful! I do have a question as I can't seem to find the answer anywhere. I have a hair brush that I bought in the store and it is a boars hair bristle brush, but it has a plastic handle and base to it. I noticed maybe after a month of using it that I have dead skin that has entangled with the boars hairs. I have tried scraping the brush with a hair brush tool under running water and it doesn't work. I don't want to use it for fear of putting dead skin back onto my head. Do you have any other suggestions that I could use to get rid of the dead skin?
Dan C Bearded thanks Dan! I just purchased a Zilberhaar boar bristle brush. From lists I found online, it comes highly recommended. I didn’t know that there were fake boar bristle brushes that can still claim to be 100%. Do you recommend using two separate brushes for head hair and beard hair? Thanks again for the high quality info!
Hey, this is a great video thank you! But....I did exactly that and the brush ended up with veeeeeery bad smell after the cleaning. There was no bad smell before, so not sure what could've happened? You have any idea?
Sounds like you have real boars hair, which is a good thing. Sounds like they became too saturated. If you give it some time, the natural smell should fade. Make sure they really dry, you can assist with a low heat blow dryer
@@DanCBearded Thank you for the reply, I will do it exactly like that right now. Also, do you have a link to a video of yours where you explain if wax and balm are the same thing, just that wax gives it more hold? I use Oil first and than wax every morning. First I wash with warm water 3 times a week with special beard shampoo. Second, I always use a Spray for heat and brush it with a special heat beard brush. Third, I put the oil and let it sit for 5min and than I use the wax. Fourth, at night I use oil. I will buy some butter to use that as well at night as you explained on another video. Best Regards, Esteban
I've seen dozens of people talk highly of boat's bristle brushes, but I also have a spare nylon bristle brush. Is that an adequate substitute to the boar's hairs? Genuinely curious
I bought 2 100% boar bristle brushes… I love how it feels… but a after a week….. my hair stunk 🤢 I don’t know why my brush stinks so bad? I’ve cleaned & once it dries… the odor comes back. Are there certain boar bristles that cannot get wet? 🤔
Boars hair are animal products so they will always have a little smell to them. The smell is stronger when wet, but should go away as it dries. Essential oil with the brush is a good call too
I noticed you are using a firm bristle. All of my beard brushes are soft bristles. Will this work for them? Where can I get firm bristles? I can only seem to find soft bristles.
how often do you have to replace a boar bristle brush? With proper cleaning and care, could you potentially use it forever? I've read online about having to replace it every 3-4 months, just wanted to make sure. I've had mine for only a week and one or two bristles have already fallen out, probably my fault though.
The smells means you have the real deal. It is an animal product so there will be some scent to it. Keep using it and the oils will take the scent away
Dan C Bearded oh ok! So I’m good? I just notice that after I brush my hair & beard it takes on that smell for a bit. Any suggestion of a particular oil I should use to speed up eliminating the smell or is it just time needed?
I thankfully don't have a beard, but I do have a wooden handle boar bristle brush with nylon bristles because my hair is thick. What do you recommend to clean it besides what you used? And when do you know that it is time to actually wash it?
Does a lot to get all the grime out, but what about the tiny white hairs that get tangled up in the bristle bundles on the brush? I can't seem to get rid of em. Tried like 3 different kinds of soaps/wash, even tried 91% isopropyl alcohol and no dice.
I've kept coming back to this guide for over 2 years now. Thanks and never take it down.

@@butterlit0 any beard oil will do the trick! And yeah, just a little time and patience. It shouldn't take long
I thankfully don't have a beard, but I do have a wooden handle boar bristle brush with nylon bristles because my hair is thick. What do you recommend to clean it besides what you used? And when do you know that it is time to actually wash it?
I am not sure on that type, but you would know it is time to clean it when you see build up
@@DanCBearded Thanks! 🤗
Good stuff man. This is actually the same method I use.
Perfect!
What are your thoughts on adding a few drops of beard oil onto the bristles as the brush is drying?
I would just be very light with it, but nothing wrong with that at all
Will shampoo work instead of what you used?
Should do fine!
I own a boar bristle brush an did this with my shampoo. Somehow my brush is really smelly?? Do you know why this could be?
Just simply means it’s a real animal product. It will likely smell for a couple of days and then will fade. As you use oil on the hair, it will help
How often should you be doing this?
Once or twice a year
In washing my Boars Bristle brush can I use dish soap or a mile shampoo
Dish soap is fine
Does a lot to get all the grime out, but what about the tiny white hairs that get tangled up in the bristle bundles on the brush? I can't seem to get rid of em. Tried like 3 different kinds of soaps/wash, even tried 91% isopropyl alcohol and no dice.
Probably just time for a new brush. Apologies for the extremely delayed response
So I clean my brush exactly like this but at the base it went grayish or black do you have any idea as to why?
Sounds like something residual that you worked out of the brush and it settled
