Welcome aboard! About to post a winter camping trip vid
Getting my gear ready tonight. Heading out myself hopefully tomorrow! :)
i got lost in a sea of "winter camping guides" that were basically all just commercials before finding this video. thanks to you i learned some stuff i had never considered before. thank you for being informative and helpful! subscribed
Glad to be helpful!
I love winter camping. Much better than camping in the other 3 seasons. I mainly do it to collect myself and to get some serenity. It's also fun to do during deer season and have "deer camp". However for winter camping, knowing the basics how to quickly put up a shelter and make fire is a must. This is the one season fire is your best friend! Lol
Yep. I have a trip at the end of the month, I'm half tempted to camp right in front of our group's fire
@@MikeInTheWoods
Haha, use a large tarp and erect it into a lean to pisition over your tent towards the fire. It actually helps catch some of the heat so your tent isn't so cold. I do that every year at deer camp, I usually keep my tent about 12 feet or so from the fire and I use a large medium duty tarp and string it up into a lean to fashion. Also it helps keeps the snow and block a lot of the wind to your tent. Give it a try once and see how it works for you.
I'll have to see what others are doing; this is going to be at an established campsite in the backcountry so limited space with a group of our size
Very informative video for a fairweather backpacker such as myself who is looking into what it takes to transition into winter camping. Nicely done!
Thanks, glad it was helpful!
I am going camping on Tuesday March 7th 2023 for 2 weeks in Nova Scotia Canada
Beautiful province. Spent a week up there with my wife and are considering buying a house there!
Great job sir, thank you!
Thanks, hope it helped
Chopping wood and keeping warm is always so fun . Plus I plan on going Texan winter Beach camping 👌 prime real estate and true it’ll be so isolated 🏝
Great job on the video
Tysm I'm about to be winter camping this whole winter . I'm super excited but want to be prepared.
Glad to be of help!
how did it go
Great tips!
Thanks, hopefully it was useful
I was hypothermic while hiking once and felt chilled wo any shivering and my dexterity was fine. I was slow mentally though. Luckily I was with others who realized I wasn't acting right and helped me out.
Winter camping is fun and adventurous also cabin fever
nice love it
Thanks! Hopefully it helps dispel some of the misinformation around winter camping!
you're welcome people need to see more videos like that
If your water filter freezes it can become useless. Keep warm like your electronics
cant help myself to a few drinks lmao :D
Celsius.
Another benefit of winter camping is it's hunting season.
I’m interested in getting into winter camping for the reasons of fewer people, quiet, and no insects. Plus it’s more of a challenge which I like. Good video. I appreciate the advice. What is your recommendation for a tent for a beginner? Anything specific to look for in a tent? Do you or people you know use propane or small wood stoves in their tents? With propane heaters I’m concerned about condensation and carbon dioxide build up. Thanks!
Hi Matt!
When it comes to picking out a tent, I recommend doing a lot of watching of various UA-cam videos to pick out a tent that's right for you. Will you have a lot of walking to do, or will your hikes in be short?
Tents rated for wintertime will be showcased as 'four season' tents, meaning that they're rugged enough for wintertime use.
I advise against burning stoves in your tent unless the tent is specifically designed for such a thing; as--in addition to the problems you mentioned of CO buildup and condensation--you also risk damaging the floor of your tent as well. Instead, try looking for a tent that has a vestibule you can prop open so you can cook just outside the tent, while still being protected from the elements.
Hope this helps!
I've been camping in December with just an Ozark Trail (generic Walmart brand) tent, a 40 degrees Coleman sleeping bag, a cheap foam mat, a 6X8 tarp, and some hand warmers.
Water didn't boil for me, bacon never cooked fully, NEVER set up next to water, and move around. Sitting around the fire won't keep you warm at all, Make sure your boots aren't shoddy because the snow will compact and melt and so on and completely separate the grippy stuff. Also, NEVER EVER camp next to a body of water. Especially a moving body. Seriously, almost had a guy die once.
Well yeah obviously. If you've ever watched the new at least once you'll know about something called a lake front weather system lmfao!! Smh. Also, yeah, again obviously you'd want nice winter boots! You must be from the south or something otherwise you'd know these simple things. Up here in the north we learn this stuff when we're 5 yrs old lol!!
For camping next or on a frozen body of water, it depends where you live. I'm up in Alaska, and if the ice is thick enough, you can camp on it without an issue
Can alcohol freeze for an alcohol stove ???
Thanks for the winter tips.
Not sure to be honest; I don't have much experience with alcohol stoves. I suspect that you might be okay.
Best thing I can suggest is try throwing your alcohol fuel in the freezer and see what happens
Depends on the % of the alcohol. I believe anything 20% or less can freeze.
👍👋
Just Wondering About The Boots Those Guy Are Wearing!!! Or Some Good Snow Boots??
Not sure about the rest of them, but I was wearing some boots I got from Walmart, and they did me perfectly fine. Nice and warm, no leaks/wetness
But it's cold. How do I make my tent not cold?
You'd be looking for a concept called 'hot tent' winter camping. You'll need specific tents for that.
The ones I generally see come with a wood stove you can assemble, and lets you burn firewood inside (venting out via a smokestack) in order to keep it warm.
Alternatively, you can try a portable heater, but be VERY careful with this--especially if it's propane. A good way to get carbon monoxide poisoning!
Do you *have* to have a fire going to sleep outside during winter?.
No, but you'll need a proper winter sleeping bag; and there's other methods of keeping warmer. A fire is really only desperately needed if you do not otherwise have sufficient sleeping equipment for the temperatures experienced
@@MikeInTheWoods I'm going with a -25 nanok endurance, and a thinner bag to use on the inside (the nanok bag could fit arnold in his prime i reckon), and I've heard you don't want empty air pockets in sleeping bags.
Best thing I can recommend is to try it out before you need to rely on it
@@coffeepot3123 definitely try it out at low temps around 20°F just to get an idea!
There's a lot of misinformation here. Goretex pro is waterproof and windproof and also highly breathable. Nothing wrong with using waterproof as shell
