So Chip 'n Dale is a movie that came out, and I was blown away by its world building! And while I'm a tad late to the party, I gotta talk about the unique way this movie did it's cameos. While this has become a bit of a trending to cram in crossovers for the sake of eyecandy, we've seen a lot more noticable failures that Chip 'n Dale has arguably avoided. So let's talk about what makes an reference filled easter egg background fodder work well. We've seen it in Wreck-It Ralph, Ready Player One, Space Jam 2, Who Framed Roger Rabbit and The Lego Movie. But it's time for a new spin. This is my I guess video essay on Chip 'n Dale, and how they MASTERED the background cameo appearance.

The fake 2D killed me. Some of the background characters looked hand drawn and they looked way better than the main characters and their weird 3D cell shaded thing. I think that would have pushed this film from being “pretty ok” to “pretty good” in my book.

I wouldn't mind it so much if the film didn't insist it was "2d" and lie to us as such. Other characters were 2D animated and overall it was just weird insisting it's one thing where we knew it was another. Really took me out of it.

I like to think what separates this movie from all those other generic "HEY LOOK AT THIS" crossover movies is that it's able to put a lot of cases- including its own IPs- in negative or somewhat disturbing lights. For example, the fact that in this canon, Jack Skellington from Tim Burton's *The Nightmare Before Christmas* is apparently embezzling funds from his own charity- who- who thought of this?? It's just so outright insane and strange to think about that Disney *actually* signed off on this, and that's what makes it great.
You see Jimmy Neutron in a crossover movie, you're like "okay. sure" but you see Jimmy Neutron's iconic hair seperated from him in the context that he was surgically transformed into a bootlegged abomination, it's gonna make you go "WHAT!?" because you're not gonna expect that. With the horrific context, instead of the cameo shocking you for just being there, it's the CONTEXT that shocks you for just being there. And, much like Roger Rabbit, Chip & Dale is an INCREDIBLY dark world full of, for lack of a better term, cartoon violence, and not the kind you see in ratings. That shock factor is what makes the cameos good to me.

The fake 2d isn't really Disney's 2d hate either, though. To me it seems that they had absolutely no faith in this project, hence why they could get away with so much and the whole film was dumped onto Disney+ (As well as the terrible marketing and tale of how this was originally supposed to be just another origin film based in the show's universe). It's clear that the lonely Island put in WAY more love and care into this film than Disney expected, but they still gave them an incredibly small budget because of their lack of faith. It explains why all the background cameos and characters are 2d vs the main characters being cell shaded 2d.
No hate, just my theory as to why that's the case.

You consolidate the idea perfectly toward the end of the video: demonstrating depth.
Why don't we like Ready Player One? For the same reason we don't like The Big Bang Theory. They don't demonstrate deep understanding of their references, but rather they just refer to them and hope that this is a novel enough concept to be fun. And to some people it is. But to most people, that doesn't fly.
Ready Player One makes this mistake regularly: the Iron Giant is used as a weapon because "hey remember the iron giant?" Despite its entire story being about how it is more than just a weapon. Pop-culture stories like the Breakfast Club are mentioned, and trivia about them is thrown in, but the themes of that story are never even remotely considered. Just mentioning the thing is all they do.
Chip and Dale succeeds because it demonstrates understanding - things that aren't important enough to be explored as part of the plot are relegated to just background references. This demonstrates understanding of why the reference is in the movie. And the engagement of making interesting jokes of the background reference further cements that fact. The references that _are_ used front and centre are not just mentioned, but looked at in detail. Ugly sonic isn't just there to look ugly, but to appear throughout the movie, for instance.
The big bang theory fails because it just refers to nerdy concepts without engaging with how people like them. Wreck-It-Ralph 2 fails because it regularly puts its references front-and-centre, failing to understand that they are just easter-eggs. In contrast, the new Spiderman succeeds because it calls back to the characters and pasts of the returning spidermen and has them meaningfully interact with their villains and each other on top of the "haha remember when Tobey got depressed" type moments.
I felt this way about the story "Wonder". It regularly makes references to Star Wars without demonstrating deeper understanding of the movies. For instance, in the movie, one kid calls another kid ugly by comparing him to Palpatine, but any star wars fan would love to be compared to that lord of camp. It clearly fails to show that it understands its reference on a deeper level.
Demonstrating understanding of your reference is what makes it a meaningful addition to your story rather than just a pandering add-on.

Idk if i’m missing something but i fail to see how RD1 is comparable here, RD1 is essentially if vr chat evolved more than significantly and somehow became the single method of playing all your favorite games, if i see a master chief throwing it back i am not going to stand there and point that “master chief would never do that” because in reality there’s a real person on the other side who most likely is not master chief also pretty sure there’s only 1 chief so 1:39 contradicts his whole 1 man army schtick
Same thing with iron giant, just someone who wanted to be look like or be or control an iron giant, they are all visually husks controlled by a diverse types of people ofc they aren’t going to be the same as the way they…dress?
Could they have done that? absolutely
      Would it have worked?
      probably
Is it on the same level as referencing something in name only and having it be there for the sake of a shallow reference
      Absolutely Not
You can be anything you want in this game in that movie’s world, this is about the people finding solace in escaping their real life visuals with in game visuals even/especially when it comes to changing themselves this isn’t about the characters being referenced so it’s a fairly poor example, either they choose media characters known far and wide or the give everyone an entirely unique appearance…which i personally wouldn’t care about
Seeing characters i know but not as them just other goofs wearing their visuals is far more appealing and will hook your attention..or at least others like me who get the reference because in this case it doesn’t need to be deep…
That might contradict what i said earlier and if it does then hey everyone’s a hypocrite but again i don’t believe RD1’s references should be delved too deep into, they’re there because that’s exactly what it’s like to hop into vr chat which is almost completely similar…or maybe they actually are quite similar

I think this movie took a note from detective pikachu in terms of how to use references properly. In both movies the references aren't so in your face but at the same time give some sort of info to the world in which these characters live in. With chip n dale you don't have to be familiar with all of the IP's in this movie in order to enjoy it heck you don't even have to know who chip n dale are to enjoy it either. Detective pikachu did the same thing you didn't have to be a fan of the franchise (although it helps) to enjoy the movie and what is being presented.

There's a segment where, following the newfound popularity of Radiator Springs, the Radiator Springs Drive-In Theater is up and running again, and Mack is present to be as inconsiderate as possible, loudly claiming during Toy Car Story, "Whoever does the voice of that piggy truck, I'm tellin' ya, he's one great actor", commenting on Monster Trucks, Inc. "That abominable snowplow is quite the comic thespian", and finally, while watching A Bug's Life, "Wait a minute here, they're just using the same actor over and over! Actually, I think I can see this film as a great Easter egg hunt for fans of animation like myself, if you want to save on plastic eggs, that is) in this, is plenty like how the 1936 Merrie Melodies short "The CooCoo Nut Grove" managed to pull off the many celebrity caricatures (props to character designer and then-future Disney employee T. (Thornton) Hee for those).

I liked the Blaster cameo early on in Rescue Rangers because I'm a massive Transformers geek, but it also provides an example of Disney being both too good and not good enough at animating. I've watched plenty of G1 Transformers episodes to know that CEL animation for the time was not that sharp, the only exception to this with Transformers is The Transformers: The Movie (1986) because everyone involved wanted to make the Transformers' theatrical premier as good as possible. I might buy that Blaster was supposed to be based on the movie, but even then, the animation still had that classic CEL frame fuzzy visual, albeit not so prominent because, again, a lot more time, care, and attention to detail went into the '86 movie, and even with that extra effort, the section for this movie's animation errors alone on the Transformers Wiki is probably longer than most of the site's full articles.
Basically what I'm saying is that Blaster's physical appearance is perfect, to such an extent that it breaks the effect of blending many media into one product because he is _too_ perfect.

It’s not a perfect 10/10 but it’s a good, fun 7/10 or 8/10 movie that you can tell the animators and voice actors had a blast making.
