For those who stumble across these videos, a speed run is a video of a person or persons, completing a game as fast as possible using any means possible. This can include glitches, abusing in-game mechanics and skipping items or even playing events out of sequence.
Released for the PlayStation in 1999 and for the PC in 2000 and developed by Square, Final Fantasy VIII is the eight installment in the Final Fantasy franchise. The game's battle system is based on summon-able monsters called "Guardian Forces". Source: SDA game page
Final Fantasy VIII (ファイナルファンタジーVIII Fainaru Fantajī Eito?) is a role-playing video game released for the PlayStation in 1999 and Windows-based personal computers in 2000. It was developed and published by Square (now Square Enix) as the Final Fantasy series' eighth title, removing magic point-based spell-casting and the first title to consistently use realistically proportioned characters. The game became available on PlayStation Network as a PSone Classics title in 2009.
The game's story focuses on a group of young mercenaries who are drawn into an international conflict, and seek to protect the world from a sorceress manipulating the war for her own purposes. The primary protagonist is Squall Leonhart, a 17-year-old reclusive loner and student at the military academy Balamb Garden, who is training to become a "SeeD", a mercenary paid by the academy.
The development of Final Fantasy VIII began in 1997, during the English localization process of Final Fantasy VII. The music was scored by Nobuo Uematsu, series regular, and in a series first, the theme music is a vocal piece, "Eyes on Me", performed by Faye Wong. The game was positively received by critics and was a commercial success. It was voted the 22nd-best game of all time by readers of the Japanese magazine Famitsu. 13 weeks after its release, Final Fantasy VIII had earned more than US$50 million in sales, making it the fastest-selling Final Fantasy title of all time until Final Fantasy XIII, a multi-platform release. The game has shipped 8.15 million copies worldwide as of March 31, 2003. Source: Wikipedia.org
I don't know if I already commented with this on the last part, but this run was extremely entertaining. It made me want to play the game again. Of course, I'm nowhere near this fast. Way to go Poxnor. Hope to see more runs and marathons in the future.
This one is my favorite, I like it even more than VII.
Thanx for the great gameplay, Poxnor is awesome!
Haha I love when you guys sing xD Great job on the marathon last years :D
In addition, when he runs during fights he can't run from it saves the animation of someone in critical having to get up to attack. Keeping people at critical is key to this speed run strat as when they're in critical they get to use their limit breaks.
I like that the last 4 letters of the URL for this vid are 'fukA'
In FF8 the enemies only level up if you do making them easier to deal with as them being at a lower level means that certain abilities/special attacks they use are only possible if they're at a higher level. Other than that I'm lost.
But more importantly, Eyes on Me at 3:03:52.
What can I say? Gilgamesh is just so excited about trying out his new sword!
For the painting puzzle, I could actually tell how long each word was and their starting letters by looking at the scratched out bit. Makes it a lot easier than trying to figure out their convoluted solution.
I think all the singing got a little out of hand. Still, absolutely loved the run. Hope to see Poxnor at more of these events, and would love to know if he streams!
Re-watching this, just noticed he wasted a bit of time in Balamb by going to the train station before speaking to the dog. Might have just been a joke, not sure, but in the event that it wasn't, you go straight to the dog after going into Zell's house that second time : 3
+Someguyhere111 who cares
Jordi Vijselaar
Well considering it's a speedrun, i.e. every second counts...
1:23:35 All this 80's music and finally, a Peter Gabriel plug!
run starts at 4:06
PDKJim2386 fkin, thanks man. Was looking for a time prompt but everyone in the comments complaining about singing or something. Thanks for the time save!
I love the airship music for this game.
Yeah what happened to the after show. Can't seem to find it.
Just a quick question, don't know if they told the reason during stream: It was a 100% castle run but they didnt defeat Omega Weapon?
a bit late but : omega weapon is always level 100 so it would be very very hard to fight with a rather low level in a speedrun
Thank you! No worries about late, its nice to get an answer.
FCKYEAHSEAKING Its not about the low level. As you can beat him with your starting levels. Its just that you do not have the junctions and starts for it to beat it properly. That would take hours upon more hours to do.
Everything that happens in this section of the game is all part of Squall's dying dream.
This is 100% confirmed false, and was always a stupid theory
Run starts at 4:06 btw guys.
Well done with the switch between Seifer and Edea, but you had to skip on drawing Alexander.
This run was excruciating, for me playing this game. I just used this as reference for my play through. I enjoyed you guys playing, it was entertaining, but the game itself... It was both hard to get into and play through. I need to try and get through this.
Why was it so hard for you? If you followed what poxnor did, you would be fine until disc 3.
***** I never really started watching until when I got the Garden mobile. From there I was stuck and couldn't remember where I was supposed to go.
Wait, is the final battle of the game the only time when "Maybe I'm A Lion" plays...? I don't remember it anywhere else.
Hasn't there been a speedrun of this since 2012?
I like how part 1 is close to 100k views and part 2 is shy of 40k.
dude cant believe you can pull that off! this game is fun but i always remember how long it takes to play it the long way, reading tutorials, talking to people, getting everything in terms of items, weapons, cards! i played so much cards in this game to where it was sad. ff7 is totally different but ff8 has a really organized system, once you get it. everyone who hated this game couldn't understand why we like it! boo yah odin!
ps ive tried to beat this 3 times and every time i get to disc 4, get bored, somehow forget what i was doing and later start over! this game is sorta evil...
Karl Stenbeck That's exactly what happened to me right now. I'm at disc 3, and it's been pissing me off for 2 years now. I only get so far to the point I leave it for a few weeks and then totally forget what the hell I was doing.
oh right I forgot about that. Thanks for the info.
6:42 i'm french but couldn't understood what you were saying.... :/
You guys are hardcore. Good work.
5:14:50 is the best moment of the run.
I love this game
Gilgamesh is sure a hero.
He must be from Quebec.
I didn't mind most of the singing, since they pretty much only sang the songs long enough to get the joke across, and then stopped. When they did Eyes on Me though, it pretty much just ruined it.
I will be impressed when I see a FF11 speed run.
Now that would be impressive. Any one up for it?
is jemsphire 123 a girl or what? can't tell.... please let us know :)
3:23:40 Shumi Village joke, if Poxnor is still wondering :D
>100% castle run
>Doesn't do Omega Weapon
Top kek
Well I mean that's why it's a 'top kek', plus if you really wanted to you could go for a luck roll on Selphie's Limit Break and hope for The End.
I really love this game, the story is so beautiful, i love the characters, but i really dont understand the stats system yet, can somebody help me with this?
i am close to 4th part, i have played the entire game with GF, because i cant do the physical damage that i see in the battles in this video, i have a lvl 37 squall,
with ultima added to strength (it is supposed to be the most powerful magic to junction) and also the hability of ifrit (strength+20%), but every hit of squall do 600dmg,
am i forgetting something more to add? this is so frustrating hehe, thanks for your help.
The singing made this unwatchable
I think you can force Ultima Weapon to drop 100 Ultima stones by drawing ultima from him during the battle. At least, that seems to work for me.
Yup, long night ahead!
Hah. Didn't know liking somebody was considered creepy now-a-days. Heaven forbid you ever liked a married girl.
i missed this but i would donate for Bahamoth as DragonBallZ
I love AGDQ and I love this game, but I just cannot watch this awful video because of the singing. Please don't do that. "I'd really prefer it if you were quiet."
It's a shame Essentia is married :/
But, the guys pretty lucky. Married to a top Final Fantasy speedrunner.
Omega W. ???? :-)
Lana! Lana! LAAAAAANNNNAA!!!...... Danger zone
1:22:10 she looks like aeris
Gilgamesh, best troll 2012
13:40
Hahah! :D
Such a nice game, but a pity the boss encouters were so easy and gfs so weak...
i donate 5 dollar for cactor as 9999Farts
Yes
Nope, nowhere near our accent. It's french words with an American English accent or something.
Yes finally xD
This run is fine but the singing is not only terrible, it's not even entertaining like terrible singing ought to be. It's just bad, full stop. Highly advise against singing in future runs.
Your lucky this was all interesting/hilarious or I'da disliked ya for not knowing David Bowie and Space Oddity...
Can do without all the singing...lame guys...really lame...mute!
gay singing ruined the whole vid
