I miss the modest, smaller kind of commentaries like this, when the runner gives good insights about the game and the commentators help discuss it. But I really, REALLY don't miss the songs every 15 seconds.
My only problem i have with the game is at the end fighting the boss, I have built my toons to where they gain hp when struck by the end boss and I give hp to the boss if I attack. I didn't think it was possible.
what program/ site /system where you using to help with card games?. I'm having hard time with even completing a couple of games even 1 for that matter.. haha.
Anthony Pigeon Well in order to write the program you'd have to study the game a lot. You might be better off just developing an intuition, even losing/drawing a multiple times would be faster than doing all the inputs.
I still find this game intimidating... there is SO much extra sidequests and all the card stuff is just... jeez. As much as I don't really find it as interesting as other ones in the series, it does seem the one that has the most things to master. Some day.... some day... Also absolutely love this event. Hope to see more in the future.
Probably because they're a bunch of morons. They were too busy making non-jokes about the 80's and how much they think the game sucks to deliver actual information (for the most part).
Because you can only name Squall and Rinoa, they are the only characters that can have a different name and the donations for name only cover these two (except for GFs and Rinoas dog)
Is it me or the game seems to be accelerated, just because I've played the sequence of the ships going to dollet at the same time and ur sequence finished 15-20 sec before mine. I'm playing FFVIII on ps3 , i've donwloaded it from playstation network. Someone knows what happens? Thx. Btw, nice speed run.
It’s not that kids don’t understand the tutorials. It’s that they’re super boring, lengthy, and badly designed. They make the early game into a chore. Good tutorials are super important in game design, and Square has historically been terrible at them.
+Mike Hawk (Hertz) I agree with you. There's too much laughing in this series for me to relax and enjoy it. I think it's because they were on more of a budget for sound/equipment since this really was the first SGDQ in 2012 and was done at Essentia's house vs. the studios they've done in later years which have better sound quality and noise cancellation. It's nice of her to volunteer using her home to host SGDQ, but I think they knew things were not optimal back in 2012, and due to better donations in the more recent years, SGDQ/AGDQ has been a lot better since this was first posted. I'm looking forward to 2016 though - it's going to be awesome.
Right? How about ease down on the constant inside-jokes during the speedruns that hundreds are watching, or maybe adjust the bloody audio. They are geeks after all.
+Mike Hawk (Hertz) Adjusting "the bloody audio" can only do so much when you have low quality equipment and no training using it. Check out a more recent GDQ if you want much better quality. (To put the funding differences into perspective, the marathon this run was part of raised $46,278.99. The last SGDQ raised $1,233,844.10. That's over 26 TIMES as much. These are all donations that went towards charity, but it DOES give some scope to the growth that has happened since this run in 2012.)
So glad the quality of commentator equipment has gone up since these older marathons. I know they probably couldn't help it (I mean, they could have had a noise gate or some kind of limiter on the mic), but peaking audio makes it hard to watch, and if you're like me trying to go to sleep to some speedruns, then it can be annoying. This isn't a criticism, because I've watched 2016 and 2017 marathon's live and the quality is amazing compared to these older ones... in fact, 2013, just one year after this, the quality was levels above. The inside jokes are hard to bear, though.
Some criticism: I know he's trying to stay low level for the entire game but leveling a bit to get AP for encounter none would make the speed run much faster. I know you do some card stuff as well as some other prepping in disc one but my disc one time was 3hr not trying hard. I would have done a lot differently, and with more planning (and no reset on the BGh233942 w/e robot thingy) you could cut down the full run time by several hours.
your critism is unfound. It takes 100 ap to get encounter half, and 200 ap to get encounter none. Which takes much longer time then you think. Also show a video if you can do disc 1 in 3 hours you would have the world record. If you are using the in game clock then you are doing it wrong btw. As the in game clock is skewed.
More like 3 hours and a lot of change xD... idk personally if I ever decided to speed run something I wouldn't look at other strats. The discovery process would be hella rewarding.
babysmuggler It can be. It depends on the person and also how fast you would want to improve. Some people are really bad at finding glitching, but good at doing them for example. So these people mostly just follow the strats from others but still have world record.
The cardgame is the most awesome thing i have ever seen^^ they make it sound like a bunch of people diffusing some kind of evil mastermind´s super bomb xD
I can't believe they are entering the card stats into some kind of AI simulator. Triple Triad is not hard - especially with the open rule and no random. Like when he first encountered the Quistis card, he could have easily won that even after realized they entered in wrong stats... but they played an awful move instead >_>
Love that game! However, having watched a lot of runs from AGDQ & SGDQ, this one has the most annoying & obnoxious commentaries people in the room. Always being very loud to the point of distorting the mics & speakers and also speaking over the runner when he's commenting important game mechanics or the speaker when reading donations...
Exactly.. it's quite sad.. I can't imagine how stumped he'd be if any of the other rules (which are all very simple too; it's 1st grade math) were added.
I find the disparaging comments amusing considering at close to an hour and a half in there's been...4 singing bits? Every ten minutes...riiiight. I also don't understand the concern with them disliking the game. All games have their flaws and clearly the people who run the game or learn about it still like it enough to do so...maybe just worry about what you like and not others and instead enjoy that they're playing it for charity? Weird thought I guess.
Your allowance begs the question: why speedrun the game if you don't like it? Was the purpose then to bash on it, all the while pretending it was for charity, and spending probably hundreds of hours over time developing the run? THAT's some serious tin-foil hat stuff you got goin' on there. Also, free speech, bud, so eff off instead of telling people they can't say stuff, 'kay? (yes I know this is 4 years old I don't care)
it would be interesting to see some kind of % runs made for ff11 speedrunning. that's the only way i could see it being speedrun. it is just too hard to say when you are done. the game could literally take days to speedrun for 100% and you would still have people screaming bloody murder that it was not a 100% run because of some bs
Does anyone else think Sorceress Edea looks Korean? I know this game was made in Japan, but she looks distinctly Korean to me. Maybe Square used a Korean model.
what the heck?...attacking Diabolos? LOL just Throw an Phoenix Fether on him hes down in 1 sec. ??? btw nice fight at the Missile Base? why reset didnt get it
A phoenix down will not kill diablos and a "phoenix fether" doesn't exist, nor is fether a real word. Clearly don't know what you are talkin about. I didn't watch the diablos fight but the quickest way to kill him is to keep blind up, draw+cast demi until your attacks/limit breaks will do more damage.
I'm gonna reply to this 3-year old comment because apparently nobody knows anything about FF8 but wants to tell you off: the boss you can insta-kill with a Phoenix Down (not a "Fether") is the Fake President you fight on the train during the Timber mission, AFTER he transforms into Gerogero. There is also another undead boss you fight in Disc 3, Abadon, that can be dispatched in one turn via X-potion/Elixir, or the Revive command. Another note: this is in FFVIII, not 6, not 7; I'm talking about FFVIII. Everyone learned now?
that was hard to watch. constant bad singing (im not even kidding) , the runner seems to be .. quite on edge too, snapping at ppl lol . iknow this was uploaded like 6 years ago but still.
Me: Dear God, please help me... I'm trying to find the part of final fantasy (I can't remember which one) where the guy had to meet his friends at the bottom of a mountain but have to battle a werewolf boss first on his way... Thank you 👏🏿👏🏾👏🏽👏🏼👏🏻👏 God: ?...
seeing what Poxnor does with junctions and non-drawing really exemplifies (to me) why so many people like this FF game. In my opinion though, the Laguna segments were the better part of the game. Laguna segments have better music, more interesting characters, and a more interesting story (again, in my opinion)
Was there something to win for all the guys around the player ? I mean ... so many people laughing at jokes so not funny, they were hoping to get a prize in the end ?
People sometimes are so freaking ignorant and selfish. "I don't like that they're goofing around and are having fun, there for this video sucks" How about this: Host your own marathon with your community and don't comentate anything so no one can complain.
I miss the modest, smaller kind of commentaries like this, when the runner gives good insights about the game and the commentators help discuss it.
But I really, REALLY don't miss the songs every 15 seconds.
During the Laguna Hotel Bar sequence that starts at 1:58:30 , all I could think of was "The Piano Has Been Drinking" by Tom Waits.
MortonGoldthwait
Love that part.
MortonGoldthwait
Love that part.
This is the most heartwarming speed run ive seen yet. Those little girls are adorable!
yep. long time ago, the link is in the annotation now :)
Poxnor clearly knows this game inside and out. But he is insanely high strung.
or i should say thats where the timer starts. actual gameplay somewhere around here 14:10
My first FF game , very nice speedrun guys
It's always serious time with this guy
Tony Longpipes Oh yeah if his girlfriend doesn't alphabetize the snacks after they go grocery shopping, she's getting her ass beat.
02:10 run starts here.
that kid's going to grow up to be a legend
this was my favorite game from my childhood, this makes me wanna play it all over again.
I've watched most of this video. This video is not as bad as some of these comments make it seem.
6 hours for part 1. Oh good God. o.o
I miss the old FF games.
My only problem i have with the game is at the end fighting the boss, I have built my toons to where they gain hp when struck by the end boss and I give hp to the boss if I attack. I didn't think it was possible.
It's amazing to see how far agdq has come.
I haven’t bothered with it since 2014. It lost its charm, as did most things that year.
All right!!! Thanks for the upload guys!
with Triangle or Circle (depends on what button you assigned the cancel option)
Why does he always flee in Bossbattles?Does it make the fight faster?
It keeps Squall from going into a crouch position, making him avoid that animation and being a little bit faster.
LOL! I was just about to start an FF8 MS run today! Thanks for reading my mind, SDA UA-cam :P
I don't know if it's faster, but using draw on the underground fish forces them to go above ground.
John Malkovich speed running FF VIII? Epic!
What's annoying is pathetic whiners making fun of people on the internet. Cowardice and tactless!
Thanks for this Christmas present!
watching this speedrun is super fascinating for me cause I love this game, and it also helps me learn some speedrun strategies haha
Games Done Quick really has come far
I'm also surprised Seifer's limit break wasn't abused during the SeeD mission; IIRC he doesn't have to be at critical to activate.
This was in Utah?
Geeze, a lot of cool gaming stuff happens in Utah that I seem to miss!
I know Essentia is from Utah though, so yay :)
what program/ site /system where you using to help with card games?. I'm having hard time with even completing a couple of games even 1 for that matter.. haha.
Poxnor wrote the program he was using himself so he probably just has it on his laptop.
Ah. I really could use program haha.. since i wanna do 100% speedrun soon :)
Hope to see more in the future.
poxnor reminds me of john malkovich
FFX-2 and FF13-2 are much shorter games than the original FFX and FFXIII games...generally 3d FF speed runs are around 10 hours.
An hour and a half in, a nice way to end my exam week. =)
Peecee version: Roses and Wine patch.
Around 10:30. Why did he say you can only name Squall and Rinoa?
Probably because they're a bunch of morons. They were too busy making non-jokes about the 80's and how much they think the game sucks to deliver actual information (for the most part).
Because you can only name Squall and Rinoa, they are the only characters that can have a different name and the donations for name only cover these two (except for GFs and Rinoas dog)
This is impossible to watch with sound on.
the comments saved me the pain of watching this... many thanks, friends.
speedrun legend of the dragoon pls.
People have started doing LoD speed-runs, but they're still in a pretty early state of routing. Lots of room for improvement, etc..
cant believe I missed that...
AGDQ PLOX
The card help thingie he is using, what's it called?
What were you raising money for guys?
A link in the description would also be nice. A lot of people never leave annotations on, and mobile devices don't display annotations.
omg my ears hurt.
Is it me or the game seems to be accelerated, just because I've played the sequence of the ships going to dollet at the same time and ur sequence finished 15-20 sec before mine. I'm playing FFVIII on ps3 , i've donwloaded it from playstation network. Someone knows what happens? Thx.
Btw, nice speed run.
i always read GF as girlfriends because i forgot it meant guardian forces
Apparently, I'm the only person who completely understood the tutorials in this game when I was 8. I never understood people complaining about them.
It’s not that kids don’t understand the tutorials. It’s that they’re super boring, lengthy, and badly designed. They make the early game into a chore. Good tutorials are super important in game design, and Square has historically been terrible at them.
You can use the map in blamb to fast travel...mind blown
Only in the beginning of the game though.
Has poxnor run any other games? I can't find him anywhere on youtube, and I want to see more of his runs.
4:46:05 for peaches and the lucky charms
Oh wow! They DO look like overgrown plecos! :D
Speed run? Don't you mean...SpeeD run?
my Favourite FF... ♥
Ugh, the ear-shattering laughing every 30 seconds made the whole thing unwatchable. Sorry.
+Mike Hawk (Hertz) I agree with you. There's too much laughing in this series for me to relax and enjoy it. "I dreamed I was a moron" has nothing on "Kanji, would you please beat the shit outta me?"
Very good commentary, I enjoyed all of it!
1:07:30 - As we all know: there are *always* giant robots. Always.
Yes. And *that reference* is a reference to the "Grand List of JRPG Cliches".
Sure.
Final Fantasy 9 is my favorite FF =)
What was he using for the card game?

1 part is 6 hours oh my
The cardgame is the most awesome thing i have ever seen^^ they make it sound like a bunch of people diffusing some kind of evil mastermind´s super bomb xD
Actually it's kind of sad, they are just cheating because apparently they aren't very good at winning the card game. It's really not hard
Is Poxnor Canadian? His accent is very unique to my British ears.
I can't believe they are entering the card stats into some kind of AI simulator. Triple Triad is not hard - especially with the open rule and no random. Like when he first encountered the Quistis card, he could have easily won that even after realized they entered in wrong stats... but they played an awful move instead >_>
i just cant wait for essentia's daughter to grow up and speed run ps4 and xbox one games
Seems like this could have been run a lot faster nice Blue print though
Love that game! However, having watched a lot of runs from AGDQ & SGDQ, this one has the most annoying & obnoxious commentaries people in the room. 2:12:45 lol the trains snapping to position

"Stupid. He's really smart"
You guys don't understand, I died at that.
ty
I will be impressed when I see a FF11 speed run.
Now that would be impressive. Any one up for it?
FF11 is not impressive at all. No skill involved, just braindead grinding.
it would be interesting to see some kind of % runs made for ff11 speedrunning. that's the only way i could see it being speedrun. it is just too hard to say when you are done. the game could literally take days to speedrun for 100% and you would still have people screaming bloody murder that it was not a 100% run because of some bs
You can play this on ps2 right?
2:10:24 Was my favorite moment.
R.I.P Robin Williams.
Furthermore, the ONLY reason I liked was because gaming for charity is really a great thing and I love final fantasy 8.
umm did you upload part 2?
Does anyone else think Sorceress Edea looks Korean? I know this game was made in Japan, but she looks distinctly Korean to me. Maybe Square used a Korean model.
Is that Carcinogen?
what the heck?...attacking Diabolos? LOL just Throw an Phoenix Fether on him hes down in 1 sec. ??? btw nice fight at the Missile Base? why reset didnt get it

Probably thinking about a similar boss in VII in Cosmo Canyon where you kill him with 1 phoenix down or by "healing" him to death.
that's how you kill the phantom train in FF6
I think you were thinking of the Gi from FFVII at Cosmo Canyon. But I'm sure you've gathered that after 2 years.

Lol!
my favourite FF game just so happens to be the easiest.... go FF8. love how you can get squalls 2nd best weapon before going to timber and max hp....
best FF game!
Is it just me or is Poxnor giving Nitrodon a hard time :P
that was hard to watch. constant bad singing (im not even kidding) , the runner seems to be .. quite on edge too, snapping at ppl lol . iknow this was uploaded like 6 years ago but still.
I love the facs that he name his GF the name of warhammer chaos god

Take on me... No but really, nice run guys
Yeah, that sounds easy, but it's not. I once played the same person multiple times in a row even though my cards should have been able to win easily.
Thanks, God will reward you with rivers of candy and teddy bears for this. Or something.
Wut.... That is a LOOOONNNGGGG run...
he talks in questions
if u watch the ff7 run they name tifa Poxnor. I think that was an insult, not a compliment.
hahaha a thanks is more than enough^^ but you could give my lets play on the other chanel a try if you like :)
