This is an evergeen Ilayaraja classic from Pagalil Oru Iravu which has such a haunting melody, rendered so soulfully by the legendary SPB! The song is in the home key of C# minor. The chords are on-screen at the bottom right. Chords are given for 1 pallavi & 1 charanam - the same chords repeat for all charanams. In addition, the chords have been given for the Intro & all 3 interludes/BGMs - Backing Track with 21 different instruments produced on Guitar Pro 8.0
Here are the main scales/modes used in this song with their equivalent in Carnatic raga:
~ Natural minor scale : “Naṭabhairavi”
~ Harmonic minor scale : “Kirwani”
~ Diatonic major scale : “Shankarabharanam”
    ~ Mixolydian Mode : “Harikambhoji”
    ~ Dorian Mode : “Kafi”

Love the way his melodies break the stereo type of conventional western scale, exm the Minor 3rd he does it in major using it as dominant to pass over to resolve, one life time is not enough to understand his music.

Raja is an absolute genius! His choice of chords within/outisde the home key is just fabulous

I love the way Raja weaves through Modal Interchanges. In the Pallavi he moves from Aeolian to Dorian so smoothly, and in the Charanam he makes the IV chord into a Minor so tastefully. Even in the 1st Interlude/BGM during the flute piece, the melody line moves from an Ionian to a Mixolydian! And the switch between natural & harmonic minors are so cool. Raja does all this so seamlessly & makes it sound so musical/magical!

Just found out it's in Mohana ragam, which uses the 3 chord as a Major, may be cause of that, he mixs both western and eastern.

This song is not in Mohana ragam. Mohanam is a 5-note ragam : the same intervallic note structure as the Major Pentatonic in western music
Yes, substituting the iii minor chord with a Major chord would be the concept of Secondary Dominant, which is very common in Gospel music. Raja has used a plethora of musical concepts in his composition ✨🎶✨
