Finding the Ideal Trail Camera and Mineral Locations For This Summer

  • Let's start with what might be the most obvious of these trail camera tactics to maximize pictures of bucks. Mineral sites or protein feeders might be the easiest during spring and summer months to get quality pictures of big bucks. Bucks scour the landscape for protein and other minerals to consume in order to provide their bodies with the nutrients they need leading into the fall and winter months. Oftentimes, developing mineral sites are just as effective as any other means to capture great photos of whitetails. Some states allow minerals year round while others may not. This forces hunters to get creative with their camera placement. However, I know that not every state permits placing minerals out at all for deer to consume. Thus, as hunters, we need to identify other means of capturing elusive giants.
    STATIC TRAIL CAMERA SETS
A Static set is a trail camera placed in any environment where you can dictate precise deer movement, location (distance from the camera), and the approximate time spent inside the effective detection range of that trail camera. Derived from the exact definition of Static, “lacking in movement, action, or changed”, we have coined the phrase “Static Set” to describe areas such as feeders, bait stations, mineral sites, water holes, and have even included scrapes. We consider these areas as such because we fully expect deer to spend an extended period of time at these locations, thus the reason we’ve included scrapes here. With very minor habitat work, like hinge cutting or simply creating barriers, we are able to dictate the entry and exit routes to these locations. And to top it off we can create these locations anywhere we see fit including mock scrape locations. It’s not very often we have the ability to dictate so much in a deer’s world and couple that with the powerful data from a trail camera.

Good topic. Like you I make my own mineral. I work for a company that produces powders from cold pressed fruit, vegetable, and herb seeds. When mixed with livestock mineral and dried molasses the deer absolutely love this.

Thanks for the kind words about Exodus. I can definitely see your point about the enjoyment of going through all the photos. Running trail cameras can really become a hobby and quite enjoyable when going through all the different photos. If you are looking for a standard SD card camera I would recommend the LIFT II. If you are looking to go cellular I would recommend the Render. Thanks again for watching!!
