  • Vilnius is the capital of Lithuania, and its largest city, with a population of 554,060 (838,852 together with Vilnius County) as of 2011. It is located in the southeast of the country. It is the second biggest city of the Baltic states, after Riga.
Vilnius is the seat of the Vilnius city municipality and of the Vilnius district municipality. It is also the capital of Vilnius County. The first known written record of Vilnius as the Lithuanian capital is known from Gediminas' letters in 1323.
Vilnius is classified as a Gamma global city according to GaWC studies, and is known for its Old Town of beautiful architecture, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994. Its Jewish influence until the 20th century has led to it being described as the "Jerusalem of Lita" and Napoleon named it "the Jerusalem of the North" as he was passing through in 1812. In the year 2009, Vilnius was the European Capital of Culture, together with the Austrian city of Linz.
Vilnius has been rapidly transformed, and the town has emerged as a modern European city. Many of its older buildings have been renovated, and a business and commercial area is being developed into the New City Centre, expected to become the city's main administrative and business district on the north side of the Neris river. This area includes modern residential and retail space, with the municipality building and the 129-metre (423') Europa Tower as its most prominent buildings. The construction of Swedbank's headquarters is symbolic of the importance of Scandinavian banks in Vilnius. The building complex "Vilnius Business Harbour" was built in 2008, and one of its towers is now the 5th tallest building in Lithuania. More buildings are scheduled for construction in the area. Vilnius was selected as a 2009 European Capital of Culture, along with Linz, the capital of Upper Austria.
Identified views and locations include: the view from the Television Tower, the view of the Television Tower, Laisvės pr., T Narbuto g., St. Raphael The Archangel Church, Šnipiškes, Konstitucijos pr., Radisson Blu, Upės g., Baltasis tiltas, Neris River, Gediminas Ave, Museum of Genocide Victims, Auku g., Tauro kln, Pamėnkalnio g., Vincas Kudirka Square, Novotel, Gedimino pr., National Theatre, Vilnius Cathedral, Cathedral Square, Gediminas Tower, Hill of Three Crosses, Vilnia River, Arsenalo g., T. Really good job! I grew up in this town though currently live in London.
Whenever I see any clips about my hometown on youtube, it's always a summer. But we often forget that it is really beautiful when covered in snow. I value your determination of visiting and making this film in winter. I can imagine how cold it must have been wondering around with a camera for hours in freezing temperatures.

Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania, is one of the most frequently visited cities of Northern Europe. It draws attention, not only because of its unique architectural character, but also by its cultural events and attractions. A variety of business, political and cultural meetings are held there. Vilnius is attractively presented at international tourism exhibitions and co-operation between many capitals of Europe is promoted. !!!

With all that picturesque beauty as it is now, Vilnius without doubt nowadays would be completely different as a city if it had gone to Poland back then in 1920's. I really can not imagine Vilnius city being different as it is now! Vilnius reveals full beauty of being such as it is right now. Vilnius as a city is at its best right now otherwise it simply would not be it. Guys, rely on me, VILNIUS is a charming, clean and well maintained, cosy, picturesque...guys trust me Vilnius is just!.....) Guys, Lithuanians are always welcome you here. Be sure you will be okey here just follow common rules as everywhere basically in the world. So guys, enjoy your time here. See you here !

Cała architektura pochodzi od Włochów i Greków. Nie oznacza to, że Włosi i Grecy zbudowali wszystkie miasta w Europie. :)

There are lots of young people in Vilnius, especially during the spring or summer time, just visit Vilnius center any day of the summer and it's always full and vital. The education might also be funded by the government if you have decent or atleast average abilities. I've graduated here in Vilnius and didn't even think about emigrating, I love this city and country too much.

Thanks for the comment, the temperature was around -12 most days and colder at night. It was tough going on the nose and finger tips, but otherwise dressing appropriately made it manageable - of course it helped having a few pubs and coffee shops to call into on the way around! Next time I go it will be Summer.

Hi, I was wondering how you would rate Vilnius, specificially compared to Tallinn / Riga if you've been to either of those. Vilnius is never seemingly rated as attractive as them, but doesn't mean it's not worth a visit I suppose?

Too bad Lithuania don't promote enough little cosy towns with small old towns, like: Šilutė, Kėdainiai, Telšiai, Zarasai (with lots of lakes and greenary), Biržai (excelant beer / "Beer Road"), Anykščiai, Kernavė (first capital), Rumšiškės (ethnic park), Rokiškis.
Too bad you didn't visit: Neringa (best in summer), Kaunas (second largest city); spas and health resorts: Druskininkai, Birštonas (all year long); Palanda (in summer).

LETUVA hotel name was not good enough... they had to rename it to some vegetable similar to radish crop.... yet I have seen some hotels named after Muslim Ramadan.... OK here we go Vilniyas... NERIS River is a coded name of a SIREN from Greek mythology. Hmmmm.... graffiti... I don't know about other tourists, but the more graffilthi you put on the walls the sooner I will leave the place, or not arrive at all. Regarding television, I'd buy a flat facing the Opera bldg in Vilnius, so I don't have to buy a TV for my place, and that's big savings. Great city, and the snow covers all imperfections, such as silica bricks used sinfully in the Old Town and the wavy asbestos roofs. These views could be Vilnius in as early as 1960s if not the communist experiment by the handful attempting to slow down the onslaught of the NWO and the chemtrail'ed skies.

well suicides happen cause of wrong thinking.. wrong understanding what is life all about, people see the world with very narrow perspective... You can find work here if you have some skills..The Nature is beautiful, full of lakes , rivers, forests, and the beach is also fine, there are plenty of cool people, I like it here - that is my home... Of course I wish that these unhappy people would be happier, but I cannot change anything except I can suggest to research everything about meditation
