All the Harry Potter movies were shot on film - that’s my mistake. I read into the 2K DI and didn’t notice the 35mm negative. But only 1 & 2 were mastered at 4K. Review still stands - they look the best of the set in my opinion. My bad! Sorry about that.
So if they were all shot on film, why would they not master them all in 4k?

@@Gmen2010champs Because the first two films didn't actually have full DIs to begin with, so they just rescanned the negative at 4K. The others were all done with DIs, so instead of having to rescan, re-edit, recolour, etc, they just used the digital files they had and enhanced what they could.
No, all 8 movies received a brand new 4K DI from colorist Peter Doyle himself (same guy who did the old 2K DI for each film originally).

I actually bought the French Blu-ray steelbook set sealed for 20 bucks. Everyone was scared because of the "French" so I snagged it. Menu's and films themselves was defaulted to English lol. I was very happy with my purchase.

@@killer92173 I just bought the Best Buy 4K steelbook collection, and FYI you only get the 4K Disc and the movies standard blu ray, you don't get any of the special features discs, those are only for the individual movies releases
@@DualReaver11 I think your wrong mine came with the 4k disks then a regular bluray I think the regular blurays have special features also if you have vudu it has some of the features too i got a code for all the movies on that too

I bought this set at Black Friday for 50% discount. To me the picture quality in this 4K set is far superior to the 1080p blu ray. The last 4 movies in particular look especially sharp and clean, much better than the blu rays. But maybe 4K makes more difference on my TV because I have an 85 inch TV. But I am very happy with the purchase and I think this 4K is pretty good.
FYI, all 8 movies were shot entirely on film. No digital.
Yes, I was going to post the same. I love Jeff but he gets a lot of these small details wrong. The first two were finished to 35mm master positives, and it was those that were scanned in for the 4K releases. The other films, while shot on film, were mastered to 2K digital intermediates, and then upscaled for the 4K release.
You are correct. I mis-read the IMDB listings and saw 2K digital - thought it said they were shot digital too.

I only upgraded half of them. 1, 2, 3 and 7.2. HP 2 is perhaps my favorite 4K disc of any film; the colors, settings, etc are absolutely stunning!
Thank you for the review, but even though the DI for the Harry Potter movies from 3 to 7 part 2 are 2k, they’re all shot on film using the Arricam and the Arriflex 435 and not a single digital camera was use in the making all Harry Potter movies. The first 2 movies were digitally remastered in 4k because they were re-released on IMAX before the first Fantastic Beasts movie came out and since the first two movies was not released on IMAX, they had to remastered in again for the IMAX digital projector.
This collection is now $89.90 at Amazon. 16 discs (all 8 in 4K and all 8 in Blu-Ray) works out to $5.61 per disc. That's doable.
Great review, I’m going to stick with my blu rays. The more I get into collecting the more I’m realizing that I really only enjoy 4K movies with older films. For example I just watched Top Gun on 4K and it’s a major upgrade over the blu ray. But with these newer films like Knives Out or Jumanji I just don’t notice that much of a difference. Of course I can tell that it’s a sharper image but 4K just seems to be a much bigger upgrade for films that are older
Agree. 4k can definitely breath new life and detail into older movies shot on film. Most modern movies 1080p blu ray releases are already excellent.
Just wanted to ask, do you have a sound system capable of Atmos or dts:x, for I have herd on a number of 4K reviews the atmos or dts:x tracks make the biggest difference for 4K blueray

@@Tomhyde098 ahh, well that makes sense, the 4K upgrade was more of a thing for audio and video, since visually 4K didn’t improve the picture all that much… but I hope you can continue to enjoy the older movies in their 4K upgrade.
@@Ryand0523 looking at my old comment I’d change my mind a little bit. The HDR, if done right, can really enhance modern movies. I’ve changed some settings on my tv since this video came out and it looks a lot better.
My biggest problem with the Harry Potter movies is that they were filmed over a decade when there was a lot of change in the film industry and so the quality of each movie I think varies pretty drastically because we go from 35 mm 5.1 digital surround sound with 4K Dolby Atmos sound over the span of the series.
Yeah that’s what is so good about the Lord of the rings. It was all filmed at the same time. 👍❤️
As someone that only had the dvds, the 4k upgrade was definitely worth it for me, especially with how integral they were to my childhood
How big was the difference? On the DvDs i struggle to see anything in later films.

I've started out with the first two movies back in March, and then bought the last 6 on 4K Blu Ray a few months later. I still have the 31 Disc Blu Ray + DVD Hogwarts Collection as I ended up buying the movies twice since I'm a die hard fan since I was a kid.
I’ve been to the Harry Potter set tour thing about 5 times, mainly because it’s really close to my house and my mum is obsessed with Harry Potter
I will out myself as a stan of the original two movies. I know that PoA is universally considered to be the series’ magnum opus, but I never cared for the stylistic and tonal departure from original two that it began. Really all I would consider upgrading is the original two, so I’m thrilled to hear that their more old school presentations lend themselves well to the best format available. Thanks for the review!
Personally, as someone who used to watch all of these movies on blu-ray at least once a year, I can tell you that I always found The Half-Blood Prince to be almost unwatchable on blu. It looked too godamn dark! To the point that I just didn't enjoy it. I don't know if it was a problem with my copy or what, but I remember reading the comments of other consumers who had the same problem with this movie. However, the 4K version of this film looks absolutely MAGNIFICENT! It looks perfect IMO. In general, I'm very happy with the way the entire saga looks on 4K when compared to their blu-ray counterparts.
I've always thought half blood prince just looked off, like it was blury compared to the other films or something idk i can't explain it but I'm glad someone else has noticed too

If you don’t already own these I recommend the 4K version.
The first two really blew me away, have seen them 10's of times before, but the DTSx score of john williams really comes to life! Goose bumps i can asure. The set can be found pretty cheap so definitely would do it.

I worry with HDR a lot of people are shunning low lit scenes. Let the cinematographer present it the way it was lit. Don’t push the shadows. Let it be dark. I think they ruined LOTR with 4K. The contrast is lacking compared to the bluray.

I just purchased the entire set from the UK because it was loads cheaper than the North American release. I am only part way through the first film so far and it looks great, but the truly striking change for me is the DTS:X soundtrack. It sounds absolutely amazing and is a real upgrade worth the purchase price, imho.

I have the complete collection in 4K of the Harry Potter movies I remember seeing the sorcerers stone in 4K and was taken back by it how incredible it was great review and would love to see them projected
Blu-ray sounds okay but the 4K sounds louder and pronounce, like when Dudley touch the window panel at the snake museum at the ZOO, when he swipe Harry to the side and fell to the ground and touches the glass, harry got upset and he was able to make that glass partition disappear, on Blu-ray the sound effect is okay but in 4k the sound is more louder and pronounce.
Bought the new 4k set of all the movies. Honestly, the dts x alone made this $140 purchase worth it with my 7.2.2 setup. They did a phenomenal job with the mixing.

Was the height channel used much‽ I’ve seen a few of these reviews where the height speakers were hardly used at all.
@@smccrode yes they were used. I noticed much more ambient noise that filled the room than anything else. But I def did notice directional sounds coming from the heights too for sure

I got it last year for 80 in Amazon the 4k boxset, I have the same opinion 1 and 2 its show the upgrade in the 4k departement but lacking in the HDR. And the other ones looks great, not excellent but great. The last one has the more black detail, really good. I wouldn't buy this for more than $100. Keep up the good work 👏 👍

Thanks for the review. Joe's gem is the Harry Potter 4k steelbook set. When he sold off all his others ( kept the 2 3ds of course) it knocked down the cost. He likes potter like you like Jaws 😂 loved that you flashed the wizard set...watch J get excited. Congrats on 36k...definitely well deserved.

I lucked out and got the set a few yrs ago for $79 on a flash sale. If you don’t own any of them its a nice price because you get 4k, Br and Digital
I really want to grab these, since I love the movies and I recently got a 4K player. The full set is currently under $90 on Amazon, so after tax and shipping it would probably be around $110, or $13.75 each. I think that's reasonable for an image and sound upgrade.

I work at a local game store where people can trade in their games and movies for us to resell. Someone traded in the full 4K HP set and we marked it at $6…so I bought it for myself right away 😂😂
Well i already bought the Set prior to this review. While i agree that the first two in the series got the biggest upgrade in terms of resolution, the later movies benefit from the HDR.
Part 3 (Prisoner of Askaban) is a really dark movie and on Bluray you can tell that there is a lot of dark crush going on. Shadow Detail is almost completely lost.
The 4k-HDR-version of this movie really helps the image. And spells can burn your eyes so the HDR-Pop-effect is there.
I would say that the whole collection is worth it.
I have all the individual harry potter 4ks & one thing you should mention in the description is the 4k disc of 1 & 2 are not the extended cuts only the blu rays are. Just think its something people should consider when purchasing the 4k titles of the 1st 2 movies

Only the normal BluRays of the first two movies have extened edition on them.
No extendet edition on any 4k and no extendet edition at all on the movies 3-8.

Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone v’s Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone I wonder if there is a difference in the 4k transfers. I’m going to have to get a copy of sorcerers stone to find out I think, it’s just so expensive.
Audio book wise philosophers stone is way better but that’s down to its read by Stephen Fry.

A 4K box set was originally planned for June 2020 (which obviously never happened). But the latest news I read was sometime next year, in celebration of Fellowship’s 20th anniversary.
Question is, would these be the theatrical version or the extended or both?

BTW the first two films were transferred from the OG negative for the 4K, not interpositives or "master positives" or whatever else people are saying. The only person dotty enough to do his 4K video transfers from IP is Chris Nolan.
One extra thing in my opinion that should be noted on the Harry Potter 4ks compared to the Blu rays is the colour grading seems to be muted down and it's quite dark in many places, almost like they were going for an old world sepia look. It doesn't necessarily look bad but for those used to the Blu rays it might take some getting used to. On the other hand the shadowy blacks are lovely and inky and look great. HDR seems to be prevalent mostly on the magic effects almost as if they are trying to make that stand out from everything else in a very obvious and spectacular way which given the magic main theme of the movies makes sense. @Films At Home not sure if you felt the same about the colour grading and the main focus of the HDR? I would be curious to know if these gradings are what the directors originally intended.
Can you help? I live in Russia and I am waiting for these discs to arrive to us, but there is a suspicion that this will not happen very soon. Is there a Russian audio track on your discs so that I can order from Amazon or Ebay

The average price I’ve seen is $15 disk alone (without case). I found the HP set with 4K and BDs for $120 so I think that’s pretty good

i just watched the 4K disc of Goblet of Fire and was a tad disappointed by its not exactly 4K-nes. in fact at the very beginning
when Robert Hardy is opening the Quittich tournament when he's talking to the crowd i didn't see Hardy just a big white rather
over lit blob. this is not the case with the 1080p blu-ray disc.

If you have them on blu ray then don’t bother upgrading to 4K disc. Very little difference, but it’s just my opinion.

Loooots of misinformation on this one. All 8 Harry Potter movies were shot on film. None of them were shot digitally. The only “wizarding world” movies that were shot digitally were the two Fantastic Beast films. Also, all 8 Harry Potter movies received a brand new 4K DI from colorist Peter Doyle himself (the original colorist of all 8 films).
no, only the first are 4K DI, the other ones are 2k DI, the chamber of secrets for example looks a little soft, i dont know if is the optics or is some DNR applied.
@@DanielRamirez-md9ry Aaron wasn't talking about the DI but about how it was SHOT. They were all SHOT ON FILM but 3-7.2 were digitalized for post-production --> therefore digital INTERMEDIATE.
I bought the Blu Rays instead because you don't get any of the extended cuts in 4k, only the theatricial cuts. AV quality on all is great upscaled on a good 4k player/tv.
Most people forget. Most of the 4K movie's also comes with a 4K Digital Copy. Which in my personal opinion isn't the best when it comes to Audio but it's apart of the purchase. I've been judging every 4K purchase based on the digital copy price. Once I see the price of the 4K movie reach close enough to the digital copy price then I buy the 4K version. I can justify my purchase from that point. I've been buying my 4K movie's when there right around $20.00 USD. I've seen most 4K digital copy versions going from $19.99 to $14.99. So when buying 4K UHD Blu-ray, that includes Blu-ray and 4K Digital Copy for $20.00 that's a good deal. Yes you might not ever watch the Blu-ray version but that's when you can judge the 4K UHD to Blu-ray.
I love your channel and your passion for movies and 4K/HDR and the likes. Please keep doing you! But as some others pointed out, it’s very unfortunate that you get quite a lot of details wrong. I would never post this if it hadn’t happened before but it has happened a couple times before. I’m only trying to be helpful. Use IMDb to look for technical info. Usually their stuff is right. That would tell you that ALL the Harry Potter movies are shot on film. The first two had a 4K scans done, while the rest of the movies are using the 2K intermediates already available.
Yeah I used IMDb. I just read things wrong. Either way most of the review stands - the only two with 4K DI are the first two. Can’t be perfect - but that’s my mistake

The French version can be found regularly cheap on Amazon France or Germany, I got it for £37 plus sold my old blu ray set got total down to £20. No one should be spending £99 just for an English writing on box & discs.

It's been a while since I've watched these in 4K but I remember LOTS of gloriously blindingly bright HDR sequences, particularly in Order of the Phoenix's finale.

Ok I’m a digital nut here. Here is what a lot of people don’t ever talk about. I will use capital s right here: IT ALL DEPENDS ON YOUR EQUIPMENT! This makes all the differences in the world. You can have a crappy 4K player & a crappy 4K T.V. and you won’t really notice a difference between 4K vs Blu-Ray! Also if you’re a sound nut getting the 4K (again if you have the right set up and a high quality Amp THE AMP IS THE KEY) is awesome. With my Onkyo Amp, Klipsch complete surround system with Dolby Atmos speakers OMG it rocks in 4K. So again in a super nut with all this power equipment and let me tell you if you have ALL THE RIGHT SET UPS & REALLY GOOD QUALITY stuff it will rock in this 4K set! So don’t listen to others who say well it’s not really worth (unless you don’t care about the best pic and sound and don’t have the right set up to take advantage of everything) it is sooooo worth it again if you have like I keep hammering all the right stuff! Star Wars in 4K is FRACKING AMAZING! If you have any questions just let me know. I know all about this stuff. It can get so overwhelming with all this upscaling, 35mm ,Naive 4K not Naive blah blah blah etc…. I can help if you have any questions you might have. The most important thing is the RIGHT EQUIPMENT! Bar none!!!!! Enjoy.

I have the same problem with war of the worlds on 4K disc, very average picture.
It just upsets me that they didn’t upgrade the first and second movie extended editions to 4K. But at least they included the Blu-ray... I guess.

I'm upgrading from standard DVDs to 4k Blue Rays.
I got the box set recently[the old one not the new train one] and I'm surprised that they actually tried with the build quality of the packaging. It doesn't feel flimsy and discs weren't shaking about in the packaging. Haven't watched them yet but I still remember the first time I saw the first in theater when I was 11 and it was one of the best experiences I've ever had

He's not honest though. He's straight up wrong. All 8 of these movies were shot on film and mastered at 4K. He just didn't know what he was talking about when he made this review.
Okay, so this review seems a little one sided on the picture side since the DTS-X audio is the most active of all the movies I have.

I don't get how they can sell movies as 4k, when they are clearly 2k. It is like selling a 192kbps mp3 then converting it into wav and selling as wave lmao
Cus I think even if it’s a 2k di, you’re still getting a higher bit rate from how much more 4k discs can hold, plus hdr adds a lot and blu rays don’t have those so even when a 4k disc doesn’t offer up that much of an increase in detail 2k di or not, the hdr usually makes it worth it for me or the audio track, in this case the dts:x rocks and I’d say is worth it for that alone if you have the set up.
I wish at some point they would release the rest of the deleted scenes.

I have the last 2 movies in 4k and the audio dts x is amazing! The first 6 movies are in dolby digital on blu ray, so alone for the dts x its very much worth it.

I don't think these are upscaled from 2K, otherwise the packaging would indicate as such and they would be regular blu-ray discs, not 4K UHD discs. I own a few blu-ray's upscaled to 4K from 2K, so I know.

Why did they stop offering the 4k combos with digital codes? I can only find 4k + blu ray options. I like the versatility of having both options and really dont want to buy the movie twice just for digital. I'm noticing this happening with other movies too, lack of digital codes.
I have this collection and the original Ghostbusters on dvd, should I consider upgrading them to 4k? I recently picked up jaws 4k @ walmart for $18
Rewatching this before getting this UHD box.
