I just got back from my trip to Korea on Monday! haha And I did most of the things on this list, so I highly recommend anyone who is planning to go to do these things because it will really help! I also kept a small notebook with me of Korean travel phrases. I've taken two years of Korean, but there's of course still things I don't know, so I wanted to have that as a back up just in case. If you're a girl, I recommend carrying a decent sized purse. (Maybe a backpack if you're a guy?) Because I found myself needing to carry a lot with me when we were out for the day: wallet, t money card, cell phone, passport, a fan, a bottle of water, camera, wet wipes, tissues, soap, hand sanitizer, small travel umbrella, etc. I definitely recommend carrying tissues and wet wipes, especially if you plan on eating street food. It's also good to have in case the bathroom doesn't have toilet paper. Hand sanitizer is good for after riding the subway. I carried a little thing of soap sheets with me in case the bathrooms didn't have soap.
I feel like I overpacked though--you definitely don't need to bring enough clothes for your entire trip because you can buy clothes there and if you're staying somewhere that has a washer, use it. You can also get pretty much anything you'd need skincare wise so don't worry about forgetting that. I forgot to bring my exfoliating cleanser, cotton pads, and finger nail clippers. I found I needed those things lol so I stopped by an Olive Young. You can find most things in the convenience store too. Also, if you plan on doing a lot of shopping, carry one of those reusable fold up grocery bags (the ones that are kinda like the felt material?) and keep it in your purse or bag. That way you can put all of your shopping bags into the one bag. A tote bag also works well for this.
Also, plan in advance for two important things: 1) what will you do for wifi or mobile service and 2) how will you get to and from the airport in your home country and in Korea. The reason I say this is because I purchased (online) two SIM cards for our mobile phones, but when we got to Korea, they didn't work even though they were supposed to with our phone types. The girl at the counter in Incheon couldn't get them to work. I don't think I will be doing this in the future. Though it was cheaper than a wifi egg, it was also limited data. The wifi egg is the better option if you're worried about being connected. There were times where I really needed to have a connection to the internet because I was lost or confused. There is wifi at a lot of places, like the subway stations and cafes, but most of it you need a log in for or it's for paid wifi customers only. So DO NOT rely just on that. Unless you've been to Korea before and know what you're doing, you're probably going to feel much better knowing you can connect at any time to wifi. For the second thing, the hotel we stayed at in our home country near the airport had an airport shuttle which took us there the morning of our flight. When we got to Korea, we took the airport bus to a location near our accommodation. Find out if you can take an airport bus or the subway to your accommodation. Both are cheap. I recommend the airport bus if you have a lot of luggage, and also if you're worried about being really tired when you get there. Some hotels in Korea have airport services and some do not. If you have a lot of luggage, you may want to book a taxi in advance. This will cost around 80 to 100 USD. Since the subway only costs like 4 dollars, we did this on the way back. It was okay, but it's hard with luggage so if you have small bags it's fine. But if you have a lot of luggage or big luggage, you may want to take a taxi. So just budget for that in advance. You can also take the KTX express train, which is probably what I will do next time. We also didn't check with the hotel in advance in America to see if they would shuttle us back to where we parked our car, so we had to call them when we landed and hope they'd get us back lol. They had a shuttle so it was fine, but you may want to ask in advance ><
If anyone has questions feel free to ask~ I'm a meticulous planner so I feel like my trip went pretty well haha.
OH ALSO download the subway app for Korea and also this app called Korea Tour. They are lifesavers. If you can read Korean, download Naver or Daum maps as well.

Best thing you can do! I almost always travel alone and it's great. I've been to 33 countries and that have given me some experience. Prepare yourself by reading about the culture, tradition and manners. Go with a open mind and enjoy! You will meet people you'd never would meet, talk to people spontaneously and end up in awesome situations. 😀 I've ended up in a buddhistic wedding, an illegal club in Laos and was invited for samgyopsal and soju with Busan ggangpaes. Lol!

My best tips after backpacking around quite a lot is, reduce your luggage to half of it and double your money. You will never use as much clothes as you think and you will always spend more money then you think. You'll use the same amount of clothes if you going for 3 weeks or 7 month. My luggage always weighs in on 11kg no matter what. In 3 weeks I'll be on my way back to Korea. 😄👌👍

Oh and don't forget to book a korail interrail pass. It's very affordable and you can travel as much you want to for 10 days, even with the KTX.

here are a couple more tips. if you're staying in airbnb and hotel bring a converter from 110v to 220v for your phones. many airbnb host provide wifi egg (mobile hotspot). if you have Google voice or what apps or kik you can talk to your friends and family. Google voice allows you to call anywhere in us and canada. Also go to a bank to exchange money in korea. Always good to know basic korean and custom. Research the custom before you go there.

If you are a male gyopo and plan on staying longer than 3 months, make sure you check with the Korean consulate to see if you are considered a dual citizen. Not checking property can cause you to do mandatory military service in Korea.

    • @joek0620

I mentioned this since immigration refused me my alien registration card because of my dual citizenship. My health issues should exempt me from the military service.

Don't worry!! If they look at you, they won't do it because of your skin colour!!!
Like anywhere else in the world, 99% of the people will not even care about a stranger!
Having said that, you may come across elders who will ask you about your country and will try to teach you some korean words, also, may say hello and try to shake hands with you... but, that's only out of curiousity!! (If I were not shy, I would do the same every time I see a foreign person in my country haha)
** About the language: I only knew how to say a few words, when I went to Korea, and that wasn't a problem! Whenever I came across someone who didn't understand english, I would use a picture to help them understand.
The first time I did that, the boy from the GS25 that was near our apartment was like wtf? until he saw the picture haha

    • @treasurekings5631
      @treasurekings5631 7 років тому +4

I doubt they did not understand English in Korea. Unless you visited a long time ago. The reason I say this is the majority if not all learn English in school at a young age. What you may have experienced is this; English is not the native tongue/language so it is not spoken every day. In time they forget some of it. When a naturally English speaking person approaches them a lot of them will pretend they do not understand English rather than appear foolish by mispronouncing/misunderstanding words.

    • @ortega4g

GREAT post, I spent two weeks in Seoul and Busan a couple of months ago and it took a few weeks to gather the info you have here, I used all of those tips and had a fantastic experience! Well done!!!!
Just thought of one tip, I took the DMZ/JSA tour and you need to make sure you book at least 3 days in advance because they have to do a background check if you are going to the JSA.

Just bought my ticket to Korea! Air China has a sale going on now FYI.
Also a few other things I have learned from my international travels are you can get apps that download maps to your phone which you can use your phone's gps to navigate. It saves you from carrying a map and the gps does not use data.
Another thing to back up copies of your passport is email yourself a copy of your passport. This way you can pull it up on your phone or if you phone is dead or stolen you can pull it up on another computer and print it.

I'm currently in Korea for July. For me I made sure to print copies of passport and give one to my parents (who did not come), I also printed off a copy for my self, I also brought my Insurance Card, korean won, debit and credit cards. Also make sure your luggage is not over the weight limit - this happened to my friend. Try to find out the modes of transport to your hotel, order a SIM card and pick up at airport, have won with you, you may want to use it at the airport.

In Korea free Wi-Fi is everywhere and really fast. So if you are doing a short trip you probably won't need to get a sim card, which can be quite expensive ($30 1GB of data). Also you can upload all your photos really quickly! On the off chance you are taking the boat from Qingdao, China, change your money in China!
