Great review. I actually like the headstocks. I really think Sire is making great basses and the price point is terrific. But as much as I would like to get a Sire, everyone one I've tried so far the necks are just too thin for me. I hope they build a P or J style with a little chunkier neck at some point.
Great review as always Jonny. The headstock isn’t too bad really, there are a lot worse out there and certainly the roasted finish helps. It sounds better with the flats on it if you’re looking for that vintage sound which I suppose is the point of this bass. Keep the videos coming Jonny, keen to see what’s up next.
I'm getting my D5 tomorrow in the mail.. I really hated that single coil , p-51 classic look, but to be honest , BUT they've grown on me alot, now I just really love them. And since Fender/squire won't make a classic p-51 for us leftys, well D5's the way to go for me. I can hear the P5 doing alittle more too, but since I'm starting a Sting tribute, well It'd be a dam shame not to give a go at least :) ..
FINALLY a bass demo that plays opened up with a pick along with drums, just as most of us plan on using a bass guitar.......noodling around in ur room is great but it doesn't give anyone an idea of how that bass will perform under actual live circumstances.
What we need is a review where someone takes various basses out to live gigs to test them out and see how many times he gets laid after the show. All of this other stuff about tone and neck profiles is just secondary
Great video again. That is a gorgeous looking bass, but I just didn’t like the sound at all, UNTIL those flats came along, hell yes! They should ship with flats, that bass, that pickup, they’re a match made in heaven with the flat wounds!
hey, great review! I bought the D5 and I'm absolutely satisfied with it. 100% agree on the tone: 75/80% is the sweet spot with rounds. unfortunately I also agree that Sire's headstock... is horrible, but luckily this one is a bit better. I'm still thinking of shaping it as a Fender tele. And, the most important thing. I've got one with a real single coil PuP. is almost as quiet as the double coil, but is even a tad hotter. After watching your video, I think I'll replace the rounds with some Fender flats.
Great review. The D5 an P5 are headstock to headstock racing for the first place on my "next bass to buy list". After this video the D5 is in the lead again. ^^ With flatwounds, of course. ;) This bass deserves to be played with flats. just for the record, I already own a Sire V3 and the active electronics are really confusing. But I really love the rolled edges on he neck, so I'm all in for a passive sire bass.
Thanks very much 😄 Im all for some active preamps, but for classic P and a J tones? I'm totally fine with passive. Rolled fretboard... SUCH a great feature 👏
My favorite bass tone is Ron Wood's, on "Beckola." He used a tele bass, so I despaired at ever being able to achieve that sound. This D5 might put it within my reach.
Killer work my brother🤘 and the first time you played finger style on that Beast the tone really came through roared right through my speakers🤘🤘🤘🤘🍻 cheers man!
Great demo! Nice bass and sound. I bought the Squier CV 50's P bass. The ugly ass head stock was the sale killer for me on the Sire. The Squier nails it!
Right, I'm totally in the market for a P -style bass and obviously the new sires have caught my eye but I've discovered the bass centre which is a British company and their basses seem really good value but I've not seen many reviews for them. Do you, or anyone in the comments, have any experience of them?
@@JonnyDibble nice. I mean, everything about their website suggests they should be of quality and their whole range looks great but it would just be good to see an independent review of at least one of their models.
The early 50s P basses that are referred to as Tele basses were not called Tele bases at the time. They were call Precision Bass. In the late 60s they reissued the body design (with a new pickup) and called it the Telcaster. From then on, people started referring to all of them, even the 50s P Basses as Teles.
I came in here looking for whether or not I should buy a D5 (sold btw) and I notice something else: Would you kindly tell me how I could order you wall Mount and is it durable? I just installed one………but it doesn’t exactly seem bass friendly. I will be replacing it as soon as I find one more sturdy. Thanks!
Cheers Jonny. I just got a D5 and since the very first time I plugged it I can hear something strange while playing: it sounds as if there's a very light chorus or flanger in my chain! Never heard something like that before! What could that be? In your experience this is the way this bass sounds or it can be a problem with the pickup or the strings?
Very nice Video! Cheers also for testing the Flatwounds. I have the same bass and tired Ernie Ball Hybrid Slinky Flatwound - they are not a a well fit - i will remove them again as they tend to sound awkward (i call it heavily metalical sound - almost no bass.. - very strange..) .. :-) Will try some LaBellas or the Thomastik later..
Sire need to release a version of these with the mudbucker like pickup instead of a single coil in the future (since squier would probably never do it) telecaster basses still sound very good even though they are like the first basses ever made
My father-in-law had also put Thomastik flat-wound strings on his Fernandes P-bass some time ago, and I was surprised how vibrant they still sound, especially compared to round-wounds! And I'm hearing the same thing in this video! I've been tempted for quite some time now to try them out myself; Quite pricey though, aren't they?!
Nice basses, both the D5 and the P5! 😀👍 So the only reason it says 'Marcus Miller' on them is him having designed the headstock? Did I understand that correctly?!
They make aftermarket 5 degree compensated 51 P-style brass saddles. Used them on a 51P I built which looks like the one you demoed but totally kicks its ass. A top-loaded four-saddle bridge is cheaper to make but not even close in performance. That's a big compromise over the original design.
i really like the style of the bass but i dont like the headstock and the pickup. i ordered the tagima tw66. it looks like a telebass but has the pbass pickup and has a diff. headstock.
Thanks Jonny, I liked the headstock comparison. This one is not quite as ugly as the average Sire headstock. I must say though, I really wanted to like this bass, possibly even buy it but sound and character wise it leaves me a tad unimpressed. Even with the flats on. I guess I love the classic 51 style visually but not the sound of this one.
Curved knobs, i though this was a bass review and not an adult video😉 The less pointy head stock does look far better, than the standard miller head on the other models🎸🎸🎸
A gorgeous looking bass. Headstock is less ugly and I think more generally that the darker maple helps disguise the Sire headstock. Now if I could only get this design and colour in short scale!
Without the fx on it doesn't sound very balanced to me. The E stands out against the A string and D and G are a bit more out infront of the A but doesn't catch up to the E string. With fx on it does sound more balanced to me. I love the look of it but I like the P5 sound better! And if I have to buy a new pick up for a brand new bass, I'll pass! Thanks for the video!
Am i the only one that doesn't care about the headstock? I kinda like it actually. The thing that i love about sire is that as a lefty i don't feel like a second class citizen. They put as much effort for us as for our righty brothers and sisters.
The flats made it 10x better. A lovely bass but it seems to lack a bit of grind/grit already there in the straight pickup tone. I dare say a pickup change might make it a bit more dusty hill. A real one won't amplify a harmonic at the fourth fret very well due to the pickup position = does this one? I think this gives a bit of sponginess in the treble. Enjoyed your presentation except you obviously need a significant other to throw packs of strings at you! Cheers!
Love your videos man. But please, when you introduce every one with ‘Hi, my names Jonny…’, can you PLEASE follow with ‘…and it might be a sin.’ You know, Devil Went Down To Georgia style. I’m dying to hear this resolve.

I'll openly admit I'm extremely biased against Sires, just really don't like them, but this model really has me thinking if fender could do the 50's P bass model in like the mexican range, maybe a players series 51 P bass? I just think It would be so cool to take that style and give it some modern fender color options, it would be really refreshing. As a Fender person, it feels a little annoying to be stuck with only the squier version of this bass.
That would be cool! I like that theyve given us the Player aplus, so its not put of the realm of possibility 😁 I'd recommend checking out these new passive basses from Sire. I too had a bit of bias against them before!
Just added weight and cost though. Don't get me wrong, they sound great but sometimes I think a bass has more character if it has a certain signature sound? That's just me though 😝
That was way more of an aggressive tone than I would have expected from a 50’s P bass. Love it!
The headstock hate is so stupid. They're great basses. It's no worse than Fender's design, the Fenders are just older so there's a bias.
I'm not a fan of some headstocks but these aren't offensive to me!
i think they’re great.
One day they will be referred to as that classic flamingo head
Thank you for testing with the flats. That was very helpful. Great videos!
Was hoping it would become my flats bass! Cheers 😊
I'm pretty picky about headstocks and I never considered these would be controversial. I love em.
The comment sesction was rife with polarising opinions 🤪 I think its fine, and I too can be picky!
I looooooooove the Sire headstocks! 🤩🤩🤩🤩
Amazing review man as always Sire with the bangers
I don't think the headstock is that bad but that's just personal preference
Cheers mate! ☺️ Yeah I don't think it's TOO offensive haha
Its MUCH better than their other headstocks!!!!

I know what you mean about necks! My old Sire M7 was tiny. But these are both really nice sizes 😄 Cheers!
I just bought the butterscotch! I can't wait for it to get here. I have tiny hands so I'm hoping the slimmer neck will be a good fit
Good review thanks....like the reviewer below I really like the headstock shape. Sire have done well with these !
I think they've done a great job. Cheers! 😄

Awesome review gotta love these old school style basses. These passive basses are an awesome edition.
Love it! Cheers mate 😄
That song you played at the end sounded awesome. Bass sounds really good with a Scales that you played it in. Good job good video
Thank-you! It's a great sounding bass I think 😄
Yesss some demo with flats. People doing reviews of oldschool bass with rounds are kinda missing the mark imho. Thumbs up

It’s not an early 50s p bass unless it’s a tree with a 2/4 neck but this is still killer

The Squier 50s P is a great bass, and amazing vfm!

They've released new P5s and V5s! Hopefully the D5 gets the same treatment 🙏
Lake Placid Blue, I’ll buy.

Flats are VERY pricey! But once you have then, you don't really change them so I guess it's cheaper in the long run
Hi Johnny - great review! What brand of wall hanger is that behind you? I’m looking for something similar to hold 5 guitars. Cheers!
Thanks so much! So that one is a UK brand called WallRax. Shall company on Etsy 😊
@@JonnyDibble thank you. Turns out I actually have one of those saved in favourites list already! They look pretty sturdy. 👍🏼
