Ive been in Seattle most my life, its a beautiful place. But its not a comfortable place unless you are ok with being indoors for 99% (literally) of your life there. Seattle is a business city. Seattle freeze is very real. The best way i can explain it is that although people are incredibly polite here, they only act that way to get through their day easier, when in reality people here are very cold and generally quite snobby.
People are not polite in Seattle. Rarely will someone the keep a door open for you, thank you for keeping a door open for them, make eye contact or respond to a hello while walking down the street.
Relative to the east coast people in Seattle are incredibly polite, although they are not upfront and prefer to shy from strangers. People on the east coast are the direct opposite.
Seattle freeze is so true. I'm kurdish.an immigrant who came to Seattle two years ago. This city is so depressing with freeze people they will talk to you only when they are drunk. Yeah they are polite a nice but being friendly and hospitality is different. There's so depressed and never want to hang out with you. At the beginning I thought that's because I am a foreign person and I'm not interesting for them, but they act the same with other people from Seattle
Lived there for 13 yrs, here are some words to describe my encounter with the natives. What I've learned in 13 yrs, people are insecure, conceited, know-it-alls, competitive, two faced, self centered, depressed, delusional, moody, ignorant, rude, deserters, untrustworthy, flakey af(invited people over my house, made food, and all started dropping out one by one at the last minute) but they want me to come over their house.... inconsiderate, groupies or cliquish, fake, or they only talk to u when it's a nice day when the sun is out. Most of the time their attitudes change with the weather. Although, there are some good things about them, these things make it hard to believe in the good.
Very true. I am counting down to the day I can move my family out of this hell hole/shit-hole. I don't like what Seattle is turning me into and how the whole freeze and unfriendliness is affecting my children.
I'm moving to Austin in 10 days. Seattle can suck it. I've lived out here for most of my life and the only group of friends I found, turned out to be a cult. I'm not even kidding. Bye bye Seattle!
Lived in Bellevue 77-90. Seatle 90-94. People are not nice there in Seattle. I always thought it was me. There's a reason grunge rockers killed themselves. Seattle. I went to Canada to find a wife. Overpriced area with awful grayness too many months of the year. It shouldn't feel bad because it's moderate healthy temperature and clean drinking water, but it does. I'm glad I left in 2000.
The ewok guy who is like, "I'm not inviting you into my house! I'm a part of the problem!" Its like, yeah! You are! You're a part of the problem! After becoming "Seattle frozen" I realized, you know what? I don't wanna go to that guys house anymore! I'm moving to Austin!

It's very real, but as an introvert, I can sympathize a lot. Seattle is a very introverted city, and I don't think there's anything wrong with that. However, there's a big difference between being a friendly introvert and being a pompous, elitist introvert, which is what many in the city come across as. Being a big city with many problems, it's easy to see why people there are often so afraid to talk, especially when introversion is the main 'vibe' of the place. That doesn't mean it's a healthy social situation, it just means that it's understandable. So I think people need to understand that since, introvert ≠ asshole automatically, there is a distinction they need to be making, instead of painting their view of an entire metropolitan area with a broad and condemning brush. At the end of the day, I would say the positives of the Seattle mentality are that people are, broadly speaking, authentic and trustworthy. The negatives are that people are more emotionally unhealthy and uncomfortable than in other big cities. I doubt given the weather and the levels of ambient anxiety that there is much to be done about it. But, if you go over to Bremerton to see non-metropolitan western Washington, you will discover the positive side of that introverted culture (remember it was founded by Scandinavians who are ridiculously introverted anyway). If you get used to Seattle, I think most people will come to love it, but in a social sense, it's definitely something that you have to get used to. Also, if you are coming from the east coast, you will have much more social freedom than you are probably used to--it's just that the price is that you'll probably feel lonely for a while.
Condescension, EGO and ignorance are one of the reasons why someone will say “ a good neighbor is the one you don’t have to know “. Same neighbors may have to perform CPR on you to save your miserable life someday. It’s also funny to see these proud Seattle natives suddenly become nice and friendly when they’re terminally ill or when they have cancer.
Man they're talking about this as if it's a problem. I'm moving to the Seattle area soon. I wish frequently that people would mind their own business. I don't know you, why are you talking to me? I also love the rain. I'm going to be right at home when I move there in a few days.

I am watching these videos like an anthropologist. My family moved to Seattle in 1857, then to the Eastside in 1875 (see family cabin at the Evergreen State Fair grounds). Even though my father grew up there, i grew up in Mt Vernon and Richland, then went to college at TESC. But i was allergic to the mold and moved to the Bay Area for 35 years. However Oakland was not a good place for my daughter, so she moved in with my sister on the Eastside. I visited every month and got reconnected with my Seattle friends never noticing a freeze. The question is why. Most people blame it on the rain. I blame it on the traffic, which is almost as bad as LA. It divides Seattle into isolated neighbors. And if you are not into your neighbors, you end up hanging out with.the same people you’ve known most of your life. So why do you think Seattle is more frozen than SF Bay or LA? There is no freeze in Portland! Why?
3:00 I think is where the locals of Seattle who are actually 'cool' tend to stay away from the 'act stoopid' areas by their own awareness of safety and inclusion. Don't expect the 'cool' people like Royce to hang out TOO much in tourist areas, catch that vibe in the neighborhoods like Beacon Hill and Wallingford for example. The Freeze can be skated on, easily.
I’m originally from the Bay Area and I actually hate Pacific north west...why don’t I leave cuz I don’t make 100k per year so I can’t..but I find most of the people are not nice at all...most people is stuck up and act weird...I think they are depressing people cuz of the weather and don’t know it
I've noticed that most the people who placate to the Seattle freeze anomaly are incredibly introverted and probably not enjoyable to be around to begin with
And now you really can't go into Seattle without a bodyguard - it's screwed because of the political cowards who run this once great city. I love it and don't see myself leaving Washington State because I love all things outdoors and I love LOVE the weather but in all honesty the city has gone to sh#t - very sad. I did end up moving out of King County and am so happy I did. The Seattle freeze is that last thing you need to worry about now.

Seattlites have good intuition when it comes to recognizing needy and clingy people. We distance ourselves from these needy and clingy people who turn around and call this the Seattle freeze.
Utter bullshit. I'm not clingy or needy just because I'm waiting to be seated in a restaurant or because I'm trying to buy something in a store or get served at a bar. I encountered the Seattle Freeze even in simple situations like these. Seattle people are not cautiously weeding out clingy, needy people, they aren't being "reserved" and they aren't, as many people like to say, "passive aggressive". They are fucking RUDE!! And I'm from the East Coast so I've seen my share of rude but Seattle blew my hair back.
Well that's depressing for a transplant, if people don't invite you to join their parties you feel rejected and are left alone with no friends and nothing to do
As the native Seattle seeing all these people come here because we produce answers with jobs and prosperity I am ready to leave Seattle because these people have ruined the essence of the city
Shae Robinson obviously racism exists everywhere on earth among all races. Humans are stupid in general. But many many white people are saying the freeze is real, and he claims it’s because he’s black. That claim would make more sense if every white person was like “ yeah everyone comes up to me and says hey and is sooo nice” and he was like “ wait what? No one ever comes to me but they go to all the white people? Maybe it’s because I’m black”. That would make his argument way more convincing.
He said he isn't sure if it's awkwardness OR his race. Meaning, he also wondered if it was just due to the "freeze" culture, and not his race. My question: If people feel a certain way, whether it's actual reality or just their perspective, should they refrain from expressing it in order to avoid annoying you? Do words and feelings exist only to convenience you? Not everyone who brings up race, or gender, or sexual harassment (hot topics) are doing it for ulterior motives or sympathy. For many, it's a legit feeling or concern or experience people have or have had in the past. You could have asked "why" he felt that way, rather dismissing him entirely because the topic 'gets on your nerves'. Then a discussion could have ensued, where you could voice your take. It's great to have an exchange of varying perspectives where minds are broadened and new things learned. ...Or you could continue with your approach that allows no growth if you believe that you already know and understand every single thing on this planet. From my experience, wise and deeply intelligent people realize they have much to learn. While, egotistical and self-righteous people don't, and probably think it's everyone else that can learn from them.
PhaseSkater bro, he didn’t pull the race card he simply said. He doesn’t know if people are awkward (the freeze) or if it’s because he’s black.. Seattle’s a mostly white city and when you move there from somewhere else and don’t know about the freeze it makes since why he would question if it’s about race... if YOU moved to Atlanta which is a mostly black city and people didn’t talk to you and gave you weird stares and didn’t say thank you when you open the door, you would question if it’s just an Atlanta thing and apart of the culture of the city or if it’s because you’re white... dude don’t be so defensive and so quick to speak on others point of view.
Oh please its not the race card. Im frim dallas and i think seattle is more racist than texas. People have different experiences due to their ethnicity playing a huge factor. Just be happy you don't have to deal with those issues

The Seattle freeze is a normal reaction to mass immigration of different people bringing their own issues into the city . We aren't racist, we have plenty of diversity, but diversity is a choice , unlike multiculturalism which is a forced application. Here's a little hint when you're moving some place new: Adapt to the culture that is already there and you won't have any problems.

I’m just shy (no, I am not racist/snobby/depressed)
Well that's depressing for a transplant, if people don't invite you to join their parties you feel rejected and are left alone with no friends and nothing to do
As the native Seattle seeing all these people come here because we produce answers with jobs and prosperity I am ready to leave Seattle because these people have ruined the essence of the city
thank you well said been in seattle since 1977
really dude. pulling the race card...?
@@asideofaioli4630 Your words are not assertive, yet I felt it's 100 times more powerful than your opponents' while reading your comment. I guess that's the beauty of speech.
Glad to see a wonderful human defending a total stranger on the warm side of UA-cam :)
The Seattle freeze is a normal reaction to mass immigration of different people bringing their own issues into the city .
We aren't racist, we have plenty of diversity, but diversity is a choice , unlike multiculturalism which is a forced application.
Here's a little hint when you're moving some place new:
Adapt to the culture that is already there and you won't have any problems.
Naw I'm from here I didn't immigrate to shit, it was froze befor I was born. The culture here is depression, jealousy and snobbery.
Seattle freeze was very real well before mass immigration
