As a native of a port city, Venice, I've seen many giant ships during my life, most out at sea, but until a few years ago through Venice as well, before they were banned from passing through. I remember clearly when I was 12, 33 years ago, kajaking in the main canal while a huge oil tanker passed through, it was a site to behold, the fact alone that the captain managed to slide it through such a tight space, was a rather remarkable feat on its own, and being fair, it was probably half the length of these, but still managed to tower over every single building bar some bell towers, and trust me, it's something you don't forget, particularly if witnessing it from the water. We also have a famous shipyard, where from the outside we can see how these titans are built, with huge cranes and all. I really love engeneering, and I admire their enormous passion for the job.
I've travelled all over Europe, and Venice is by FAR the most beatiful city I've ever seen. Was there with my girlfriend about a week or so before those terrible floods at the end of 2019, it was so sad to watch that in the news after getting home. I only hope that the people in power there realize such a jewel they have on their hands and do better going forward to protect it. There's no other place in the world like your city.
@@captainexistence Shortly after that event, the protection system that had been in the works for many years finally became operational and is now protecting Venice decently well from very high floods. They are scary. I formerly worked for Cooper Stevedores unloading metal ore bearing bulk ships and loading them with structural products like corn meal, sun flower seeds, pelletized alfalfa and corn, and fertilizer from a plant at Donaldsonville, Louisiana. I have no idea of the rate that fell into or was dumped into the Mississippi River near 81 Mile Point near Darrow, Louisiana but it must have been in the thousands of tons in aggregate. I say this not to fault Cooper because spillage was unavailable using swing cranes of the day, just relating my experience. The ships were very low in the water upon arrival with their decks maybe ten feet above water, but bobbed like corks when unloaded and looked like skyscrapers on their success when empty. I remember one ship, the Atlantic Converter. The engineer took me on a tour of the engine room. Everything was massive and immaculately clean. Sadly, it was sunk during the Falkland War. I was having a flashback. Yes, the ships were big, but now they are hugemongous by comparison.

The magnitude of the boyant force exerted on the ship partially immersed in the sea water is equal to the weight if the seawater that the ship is displaceing. Therefore, the boyant force that the ship is experiencing is not dependent on its mass, rather its local acceleration and the density of the seawater. Hence, big container ships float easily regarless their weight. This is also why the shipments are charged on the amount of space they take up rather than the weight of the container and its contents. Import taxes vary though for obvious reasons. Cool isn't it!
You would be surprised how often questions like that are actually asked on the bridge. A lot of times we just call them on the radio and ask what they plan on doing next.
