I had the priveledge to sail on the " Big E " as we called her. She was like no other ship by any means. I was stationed on her in 1980 while she was in complete overhaul at PSNS in Bremerton Wa. While in overhaul i was able to get quite familiar with her due to my clearance level. It allowed me to enter spaces that not just any sailor could enter. I really enjoyed my time stationed on her and was sad when my enlistment was up and we parted ways. But thankful just the same that i was able to have the experience of living on her like i did. That and all the lifelong friends i came to meet on her has made a lifetime of memories for me and ones that i will never forget. I was deeply saddened to hear that she was sold last year and due to be dismantled for scrap. What a dishonorable way to treat a vessel that served her country in so many memorable ways during her commision. Anchors Aweigh USS Enterprise, you will live on in infamy. Thank you.

Many of the really big ships have pivoting propeller systems at the stern and horizontally mounted propellers in the bow to maneuver. As far as cranes, when I lived in Osaka, taking the train to Kobe goes along Osaka Bay and I remember seeing these super-massive floating cranes. To this day I wonder what kind of physics magic they use to stay afloat while lifting such monumental loads. Hats off to the engineers that make life so amazing.

Fun fact: HMM Algeciras is tied with MSC Gülsun (MSC) and Ever Ace (Evergreen) with a capacity 23,990 TEU, being the world's largest container ships. All of them are called "MegaMax" vessels because of their staggering capacity. 🤯

Another fun fact about the Zumwalt class. The 2 railguns at the front (Yes they are railguns and not just your regular 127mm naval guns) doesnt have any ammunition. At $35,000 per shell, the US navy wasn't keen on spending such a huge amount on ammunition for a prototype gun.

    • @64TommyG
      @64TommyG 3 роки тому +4

The problem with public purchases is that they always become much more expensive than what was planned!
That they then just order a small fraction so does the unit price enormously as it will be spread out over a few copies instead of dozens! That because congressional appropriations vary so hugely, engineers have learned a long time ago to compensate for because the authorities so rarely ordering what the attracted with...

Minor correction: They're looking to replace the guns WITH railguns, because the prototype gun they had (which was some how supposed to do some like guided projectile thing? idk the details of how...) used that ammo that was too expensive. I think only about 150 rounds for those weapons were ever made.

    • @estoericaferret

@@darrolarendse12 railgun projectiles are probably some of the least expensive ammunition, actually. Literally all it needs to be is a solid shaped rod of a ferromagnetic material. In fact, if you know a few things about circuits and electronics, you can build your own rail gun relatively easily.

@@SonicPhonic you two are not on the same page here.
I'm also convincing myself your comment was meant to be sarcastic. Leave it to a youtube commenter to claim shipbuilding can't create an engineering marvel because all you have to do is build them heavy on the bottom and light on the top so they don't flip over. Just incredible insight, and so far today you definitely have the record for the distance between how smart someone thought they'd sound when they commented and how stupid they actually end up sounding. It's really just astounding how you must've thought to yourself, "man, I'm a smart guy. I could totally build a ship. I'll just put the heavy shit near the bottom and i'm golden." Hilarious. I'd pay actual money to have it set up so that anytime you post a youtube comment, it's sent straight to my phone.
"Hey guys, I know you worked really hard on that ship. You know, the one that submerges itself 80 feet underwater so it can position itself underneath the topside of an oil rig, separates the topside from the base, then literally just carry it wherever it needs to go? Well Michael G isn't impressed. Stop messing around with those electrical wires and show this guy what the human mind can really do!"

@@SonicPhonic there is more to shipbuilding than just heavy below light above. These things are usually only submerged by 1/3 below the waterline, most of it's decks are above it so there is still a posibility to capsize. And there is just really no amount of "heavy" heavy enough to keep these ships from flipping over without affecting its own ability to carry cargo below it's deck, since the "heavy" you just fucking mentioned would take all of the cargo space. If only your brain would be filled like that just the same so you can fucking open your eyes and actually know what they are doing.
Beside, putting heavyweight under the waterline only keeps it stable in normal conditions; for a rocking sea that would cause the ship to flow with the waves and over time the syncing movements would cause the entire ship to capsize, plus the fact that if it was CARRYING cargos on board everything will fall over and let me tell you, losing these cargos is not something nice, usually resulting in the damages of up to hundreds of millions or even higher. Again, these problems aren't something dumbasses like you accounted for. Please, for God's sake, if you don't know what are you talking about, shut up. Having a little knowledge won't hurt.

My dad was a Captain in the merchant navy until he retired early in the early 1990s. He was on the big super tankers of the day back then.
There are several things that stood out for me, apart from he was one of the nicest men you could ever wish to meet.
I asked how big are the ships you sail compared to the ones here, while at a harbour on the North Yorkshire coast, England. He said that we have lifeboats the same size as this trawler.
I remember standing beside an engine cylinder of one of these tankers and I was dwarfed by the height of it. I stand 5 feet 9 inches or 1.75 metres tall.
One tanker he was on was in the dry dock at the Lisnave shipyard in Lisboa, Portugal. I flew out to see him for a cheap holiday! He took me underneath the ship in dry dock and I will never forget the experience. Until you go up close and personal with a ship you don't realise just how enormous they really are.
I'm used to working on engines but I wasn't prepared for the size of rocker arms and pushrods of a ship's engine. They were a bit bigger than the ones on car engines that I was used to working on.
I could go on and on but you get the picture.
R.i.P. Dad wherever you are sailing. May the sun be in your face and the breeze be behind you. I miss you xxxxx

Nice that you mentioned the Enterprise and the Zumwalt! 😁 Didja know that the USS Zumwalt is commanded by Captain James A. Kirk of the USN? Although he wasn't named for Starfleet's future captain, he's cool about the history of the future and even told reporters to "Live Long and Prosper"! Cool, huh? You all do the same! 🖖😎

It's called relative bouyancy in engineering terms. It's displacement, compared to it's density is the key. As long as the density is less than the water it displaces, it will always float.
You could make a 1 million ton ship float, as long as the displacement water has a higher density.
      Simples.
