- Welcome to Episode Nine of the Group of Monuments at Mahabalipuram. This is the last episode of this series. We are taking you to the most excellent architectural edifices of the nine monolithic temples of Mahabalipuram.
This site is known as Pancha Rathas or Pandava Rathas as they resemble a chariot. These Pancha Rathas are an example of monolithic Indian Rock Cut Architecture.
They were carved during the reign of King Narasimha Varman I (630-668 AD). The innovation of carving monolithic sculptures is attributed to this king.
Each of these five monuments are carved over a single long stone or monolith of granite. A huge rock sloping from South to North was utilized judiciously to cut out different forms of rathas besides few animal sculptures.
The five rathas are named as Dharmaraja Ratha, Bhima Ratha, Arjuna Ratha, Draupadi Ratha and Nakula Sahadeva Ratha. Although unfinished and never consecrated these rathas are often erroneously referred as temples.
This video shows each of these rathas in detailed fashion. Hope you will like the video.

Buddhist place. Design clearly shows the Ashoka time sculpture. Lion elephants statues Ashoka style. You can match it with Ajanta buddist temple with this
