When I first saw them at Mudd Island on the Mississippi River with the ABB, a huge thunderstorm came up. Waves were white capping. Lightening was striking. They band jammed on In Memory of Elizabeth Reed and other jams and did not slack up. I’ll never forget that show! And I saw the ABB with Duane.
@@catdaddy3302 Love that guy. He was so great to talk to. AW saw me at a whole bunch of shows in a row in New England (at Mule and ABB performances), then when WH had a solo show at House of Blues in Boston, he made an impromptu appearance. He was very cordial to my brother and I.
Back in the '60's, I was buying Steppenwolf albums the day they hit the rack in the sacred store. Coming from a hardcore 'Wolf fan, this is another GREAT cover by The Mule. Glad to see they still use this song in their current shows.
@@steelermule I'm not sure "Hippo Stomp" would be a good fit for The Mule. My first choice for another Steppenwolf cover would be "The Pusher" or maybe "From Here To There Eventually" or "Power Play" if you wanted a deeper track. All of those tracks would give Warren great opportunities to make that guitar soar.
@@mikew6025I agree with everything except the Pusher. Overplayed in my opinion (in my life, anyway, so I'm kind of tired of it). Which means nothin' to nobody, of course! I also love Hippo Stomp! And maybe Jupiter's Child would be a good Mule tune. Who knows? Warren would kill them all, that's the only sure thing here, for sure.
@@daveguitarnowski4402 "The Pusher" certainly did get a huge amount of airplay based on it's inclusion in "Easy Rider" and the confrontational attitude of the DJ's that played it. But it's got a guitar riff that Warren could really make into a great jam. Same for "Jupiter's Child", another great guitar riff. I just don't see "Hippo Stomp" working quite as well but since it is Warren Haynes maybe it would. The 'Wolf really has too many possible choices.
@@mikew6025well, cool riff that it is, Warren could probably make it work. but it IS a quintessential Steppenwolf riff that may or may not be given the fire it demands.
Warren was just makin' love to that guitar! And Woody, no once could replace him. Still love the Mule, but back in the days of the Power Trio, unbeatable.
I hope John Kay has seen this, I think he'd have liked it. If Steppenwolf had been a trio, this is how they would've sounded. Hell any time *anybody* covers a Steppenwolf song, that's a great thing!
Thx for posting this, That was a great era for this original line up, seen them a few times, all of them great. Who are the 16 thumbs down ? the down thumb is NOT a download button.
Not sure where this show is, but if it was anywhere in the NY/NJ/CT area, I was there. Saw them around this time at CBGBs...maybe five people in the audience...talked with Warren before the show too...sweetest dude...I felt like I was in on a big secret seeing these guys, like, wtf, why aren't more people here? I actually taped the CBs show using a portable DAT, but lost the tape...I did dupe it for some folks before I lost it so it exists...find it...it's worth it. Long live The Mule!!!
Charleston, South Carolina July 23rd, 1997. Right around the time of the Hurricane. I saw them open for WP in Pensacola July 16th. I know the guy who videotaped Pensacola!
It all started for me with this song on the compilation for legalizing Marihuana (Hempilation) in 1995 which contains by the way lots of true gems, but this song beats them all with his power and intensity. I directly fell in love with the band and have been listening and going to Mule concerts here in Germany since then
one of the 2 had a heavy fuzz effect on it, sounded like he was singing through a telephone, and Warren sometimes sung a call-and-response with himself on both
Ok son, you don't care for Steppenwolf and the original version. I suggest you open your ears to the 1970 Live version. Then give an honest critique of both of them. These are both great bands from their times and if you have your own band, please post a video of you doing this song. I'm sure you can do better.
@ZoSoTim big time right on brother. woody played guitar in blue floyd, with marc ford and matt abts. that guy was one nasty beast; best bass player on the planet. one heckuva guitar player too.
Hey Plissken, I cannot remember who recorded and gave me this VHS. It was many years ago that I digitized this footage with gratitude to the original taper. Thank you for posting a credit.
I dig 'Steppenwolf the Second', and found Govt. Mule's rendition of this song. They changed the lyrics: in my opinion, the old Wolf sounds more articulate than the young Mule, while jammin' just as hearty - but as this concert's from Charleston, the Mule probably had a bellyful of bourbon or rum backstage, so maybe I should appreciate that it remembered the lyrics at all. :^) I'd like to visit South Carolina. I hear that Charleston's greatest "dandy", Mr S. Colbert, hails from nearby.
Steppenwolf the Second was my 2nd album (after the first Monkees album, lol). I was 10 or 11. Lucky my mom was kinda cool about music. What a great fucking album. My wife bought me a replacement copy in the 80's because I kinda wore the 1st one out.
Whenever there is a thunderstorm I tell my boy it is the sound of Allan Woody playing bass in heaven. RIP Woody.
yyz1500cc the Mule hasn’t been the same without Woody. RIP.

Good things don't last forever. This was an amazing band!❤🚬

Goddamn, that's what I'm talking about. It rarely gets better than this.
Truth. Mid-90s heater Mule

Outstanding cover, but can somebody explain why Warren has 2 vocal mics?
one of the 2 had a heavy fuzz effect on it, sounded like he was singing through a telephone, and Warren sometimes sung a call-and-response with himself on both
Allen Woody great Bassplayer 😎
Missing Woody!!!!!!!
Nice shirt, Warren! WSMFP!!!!!!!!!!!!
Very nice jam
Rock on!
Was 19 2 days past. Awesome
That was so awesome.Thankx Guyz
Nice cover
Makes me like STEPPENWOLF'S version even more.

@IgnatiusChinaski come on man he's not even singing the lyrics right. If this is how they're going to do the song they shouldn't do it at all
damn I went to a show in murrels inlet around then wish i had video of that

Awesome tune About the time song came out my mother flushed ounce of Alcopuco Gold down the toilet
@vinmanr2d2 I miss Woody...the Mule hasn't been the same since....
I LOVE Government Mule and never know where they are going. They are coming to Eugene and should just go and risk it.
Listen to that EB2!
music for yo ass .....birth of the mule ....5 biskits ...thunder and woody ... tks fur this ...
Poor Allen Woody...
I agree with Fred what else can one say
I don't think I've ever seen Warren Haynes without his guitar. Without it he'd look strange. Kinda like Santa without his beard maybe...
Sick!! Great job with video and audio!! i have a descent version from 420 this year in Charleston, SC ....check it out jonsr127
