She's talking about single use plastics which the Senator doesn't seem to understand what that is. I remember, back in college for a group project in my Entrepreneurial Finance course, my group voted to "start a company" that fished plastics from the world's oceans, melted down recycled plastics and made them into new plastic items.
As I did my research, I found out how difficult and costly just the recycling process would be, not to mention that only a small percentage of plastics could actually be used in a process like this - they just stared at me blankly. I was forced to put our "company" in realistic terms for our project at every corner, since my classmates refused to acknowledge it was just a bad idea. (ignoring even the cost of buying a boat big enough to actually dredge the oceans for our "raw materials")
People have an emotional reaction to their idea and just assume that it will work perfectly, not caring if it actually makes sense to implement or not.

She made the decision to wear eyeglass frames that are plastic instead of frames that are metal. The lenses may also be plastic rather than glass. In her case it can be argued that she uses them more than once, but eventually they will be discarded. The bottom line is; to avoid that eventuality she had a choice.

But mammm, if you're not for recycling then everything is single use...
"I don't get it, recycling is dumb and doesn't work"
Then maybe we should work on that problem first...
"No, it's just a dumb waste of time, I did my homework"

Not everything not recycled is single use. A laundry bottle is single use. A tea pitcher isn’t. A plastic straw is single use. Tupperware isn’t. Get it now Mark?
It is easy to understand when you figure out what single means. What a moron.

That is what I was thinking. If any plastic is used once, then discarded with no recycling, then all plastic becomes single use.

As Paul Wheaton says. Most environmental activists lose their 'access pass' because they don't practice what they preach and they are not on the bottom half of the average consumption curve for energy, water, gas, etc.

Given her recognition of our reliance on plastics for both health and prosperity, I'm surprised that someone with _Dr._ Bradford's credentials (Ph.D.) doesn't find it as obvious as I (with two lowly B.S. degrees) that her time should be devoted to reforming the plastics recycling industry! This is what it looks like when someone is captive to an ideology, rather than trying to find solutions.

An old friend of mine that owned a factory in China making plastic bins went to the state of California to get access to plastics at city dumps to recycle for the bins. It was a big Hell No from the garbage committee communist of CA. They hate actual real time solutions

He makes an excellent point. Getting rid of plastics would mean a straight degradation of all modes of quality of life, because we don't have anything anywhere close to as good to replace it. The goal should be on making long term solutions that make the current methods of consumption obsolete. However, that isn't a short term news worthy sound byte. Everyone is focused on making the newest thing to consume, instead of anything that has the chance of being permanent.

Actually a form of plastic can be manufactured from hemp! Paper canbe manufactured from hemp, cloth can be manufactured from hemp to bio fuel can be manufactured from hemp. It's the most useful and under utilised natural product we have at our disposal. The reason it's ignored is largely due to the USA and it's blinkered approach designed to protect thf interests of its billionaires. And protect its position as "the" world power!

She’s an ideologue. She lives in her echo chamber of ignorance. It should be mentioned that plastic, which is a component of practically everything in her house, car, life, etc, is a derivative of fossil fuels. Mullin has some of the best arguments against this movement I’ve heard. There is no such thing as single use plastics. Plastic water bottles can be reused multiple times or recycled. They use these made up terms like single use plastics to generate an emotional reaction from the uninformed…..like her to get them fired up, thusly, parroting these ridiculous talking points. We would not be in the current economical collapse if we were still producing our own energy. It all starts and ends with oil.

Water bottles can be reused or recycled, but there’s like a 90% chance it won’t. And if it does, the cost and environmental impact to getting that plastic bottle to a marketable state would negate any benefit you get from it.

Of course single use plastic exists, it has since plastic was invented. In 2022 a household survey found that only 12% of plastic was recycled in the UK, 88% was sent to landfill, incineration or dumped in another country. And that's just the UK, so despite the knowledge of recycling or reusing, mass population just doesn't. Single use plastic in this study is household items - plastic bottles, cosmetic bottles, straws, fruit and veg wrapped plastic, etc. So in the UK alone in 2022, 96 billion pieces of plastic were not recycled or reused - just thrown away.

I wish he would have asked her what she puts her garbage in if she doesn't use any single use plastic. We use plastic shopping bags in small garbage cans at our house, but now that the plastic shopping bags are disappearing, we're going to be stuck buying plastic garbage bags specifically to throw them away.
