FF2 is the misunderstood sequel. It is exactly like FF1, for better or worse, because Capcom’s goal was to create what they didn’t do with FF1 on SNES: a two player beat-em-up in that universe. And they did. And it was two players co-op. And it played just like FF1 did. And at the time it’s what players wanted. Besides, it gave us a character that has prevailed to this day (Maki) which is actually pretty good. The thing is that the game “seems generic” because the tropes for these types of games back then was pretty basic and generic. This game was merely trying to fill the void of a proper Final Fight on the platform. Final Fight 3 may have been more experimental, trying to blend Street Fighter and Final Fight, but it had its share of problems as well (boring environments, dragging the action out, etc). Some were genre related and others version specific but sharing a lot with FF2. So the comparisons have to be made in the context of the genre and time. Complaining about a basic, ridiculous story is silly when FF1 had a basic, ridiculous story as well. Most brawlers did. FF2 was a good game. It was merely the Final Fight game we never got at the SNES launch and that was fine. At the time it was just a joy to be able to play arcade quality games at home.
Yeah, try to take a former wrestler, two of his buddies with no weapons what so ever, joined with a female cop whose set of uniform is really questionable, mess with the organised crime, like the Mafia and normally you'd eat a bullet, but it's even worst in Lucia's case, she might be a cop, but she'd obviously get raped before eating a bullet like the others...
Final Fight 2 was already outdated when it came out. It was basically the same as the original Final Fight mechanics-wise and didn’t do anything new or different. SOR2 came out a full year earlier and had more moves, more characters, way better music, etc.
The flaw isnt that it brings nothing to the table, its even more bland in my opinion than the first final fight, the first one is extremely colorful, has a shit ton of enemies on screen at once, and the game nonstop barrages you which makes the game feel less tedious and more focused, its the difference between punching two enemies off the screen and waiting for them to get back up or beating the shit out of 5 people at once all while two fats dude roll on the screen, it keeps the momentum going, final fight 2 and 3 are just to boring
I remember playing this as a teen, and getting a bit disappointed as well... We all wanted to play as Guy this time around, since he wasn't in the SNES version, at least not until Final Fight Guy, but unless u were a really HUGE fan of the character, WHO would buy the same arguably bad port just because of Guy and some MINOR changes? I say, if the story was just a TAD better, MAYBE it would have helped the game as a whole too. How? Here's how: Cut that "vacation" bullshit and replace that "nobody" Carlos for Guy! It would be SIMPLE to cut him off, change his sprites for Guy's, and in the end, instead of coming BACK from those vacations, Guy would go OFF to them to improve his skills even further, which would have made more sense when FF3 came out... I'd even make a hack rom like that if I had the skills...
I've been begging for someone to make a mod for Final Fight 2 that lowers the enemies hp a little, they just have too much hp and it slows the game's pacing down a lot
I love the final fight series , I prefer final fight guy Sega CD , it was also cool how street fighters chun-li was just causally eating in the background in the first level .
Awesome you are back! Long time subscriber. Had to switch my name due to a lost password. Anyway, great job! Please do FF3, to finish out the series! That would be rockin'. Used to enjoy your podcast, too. How are the other 2 guys doing?
Love the video. Jeremy, I don’t know how you ever have time to make them between the podcast, and well, presumably real life, but they are always appreciated.
@@omgjeremyexe honestly, once you guys upped to 4 (now 5) podcasts a month, I figured there was no way you would ever have time to do even more. These could come out semi-annually and I’d still be impressed.
31 years later, and I still can't stand the SNES version of Final Fight 1. What a disappointment. Capcom should be embarrassed for releasing it at that state, especially after Konami released TMNT 4 with all four turtles and two player simultaneous play.
Yea biggest issue with this game is too much enemy health in the later levels especially. I absolutely adore beat em up games, so it takes a lot for me to get bored of them, but this game bored me to tears with how much you had to keep smacking the same enemies over, and over, and over... and over and over again. Could they have at least made the enemies' skins match the countries they were in? I don't like criticizing, and nothing can take away how legendary the Capcom team was during this time, but this game was very below their standards, and I'm guessing they probably knew it too. Final fight 1 had much better pacing, and that alone makes it better even without co-op, guy, or the industrial zone, in my opinion at least.
I love this game. Sure 3 is better but at least this included the features that were removed from the SNES version of the original. I remember playing this a lot with friends and family. Carlos was actually my second most played character I think. I remember usually taking him if if I lost the pick your character first coin flip and whoever I was playing with chose Maki.
Everything you said was spot on. I can remember certain magazines like Nintendo Power and what not were hyping this game up at the time about the 2-player co-op. It's a overall decent game and has really nice graphics but the issue with the Final Fight series even though I love Final Fight 1 is that they start off perfect for the first few levels where you get a rush of excitement but then they seem to run out of gas and ideas where they redundantly drag on in later levels near the end and make the hazards 'n bosses extra cheap with the hit confirms/life damage. Final Fight 3 was slightly better but even with that I felt like, "Am I playing Street Fighter 2 or a Beat 'Em Up," controls wise? Streets Of Rage 3 dabbled in that stuff control wise too and that's what took away from an otherwise fantastic game with doing the power moves. It's always the teeter/totter thing with developing beat 'em ups lol. Lately the last one to nail it perfectly is Streets Of Rage 4 decades later. 😇
Elick is annoying indeed. I wonder if the train thing is supposed to be like the truck stage in Super double dragon? I also prefer FF1 and 3's OST to this one. I'll have to give the arcade vs SNES FF1 a comparison listen now

Final Fight 2 wasn't such a bid deal, it was more like an improved version of the original, correcting the mistakes they made on the original, some of them at the very least, only, it wasn't as hard to beat as the original was, in the meantime, Final Fight 3 was on it's way, FF3 was well worth it....
