Geez, Airfix are kicking goals. The last few years have seen me become really excited by the resurgence of the brand which started me off in this hobby over 50 years ago.
I think giving Chris the design of the 1:24 Spitfire /and/ the 1:48 Sea King is a back-handed compliment. On the one hand it's saying 'Your workload has just gone ballistic!' but at the same time it's also saying 'You've been given these important projects because we trust you and know you'll do a great job!
I hope you enjoyed your day at Chard. We were all impressed with the new kits at Historic Helicopters and as it's sensibly priced it deserves to sell well. Hopefully later on there will be a yellow SAR version and I hope it will carry the serial number XV597
It was a very good day - started well with bacon rolls - and a brilliant collection of helicopters. Quite nostalgic standing in the doorway of a Wessex again! Great helos, great team, top day out.
Looks a great kit, very fond memories of seeing the Sealing flying over my house. I live just up the road from Leconfield where the airsea rescue helicopters were based in East Yorkshire. Also the dad of one of my daughters friends was one of the pilots, so he quite often flew over our village. Looking forward to the build video when it eventually comes out.
Great to see this kit. As a kid growing up in Cornwall in the 70s and 80s these were a big part of my life doing their ASR stuff. Fantastically skillful crews. Too complicated for me but please build the Culdrose "Ace of Clubs" version - just for me!
Not a bad 12 months for the FAA modeller! Airfix Buccaneer S.2 C/D, Seafire F.XVII re-issue, new Gannet and Sea King, plus the DBMK Scimitar to come. The modelling gods are smiling on you Gary.
Congratulations to the Airfix team! Never thought I’d be this excited over a helicopter model but the Seaking is quite the icon, especially the Apollo 11 version. Hopefully Airfix will do a kit of the Royal Malaysian Air Force “Nuri”, or there will be aftermarket parts for a conversion of this excellent Airfix kit to that. Cheers.
Hi :) Unfortunately, the Nuri is based on the S-61 and the differences between the Westland & Sikorsky Sea Kings are quite subtle but significant in details and shape. In the case of the RMAF Sea Kings, you'd need a completely new hull and engine compartment at least.
Very impressive kit! I'm sure eventually the aftermarket people will come out with improved instrument panels etc but I'm impressed with the level of detail here.
For raised rivets, get some cellotape, turn upside down, use rivet wheel to create raised rivets, attach the sticky side to the model side and hey presto job done. Also covers up join seams too so win win. 🎉
Looks good, I havent built many choppers this I think will be joining my Gannet and Rotordyne Well done airfix team, you have certainly upped your standards Thank you Gary.
Just trying to figure out when I can shoehorn my kit into the schedule! Already got another big chopper due next week (no, don't be making up your own jokes, please.....)
The kit looks great! Thanks for making the video! I will look forward to your build video. I am probably not going to get around to buying it this year as I need to thin down my stash first!
I think Airfix are really doing well at the moment. They are cleverly marketing their old "classic" kits at the same time as coming out with some really good modern kits. I bet this kit will be really competitively priced too. They may not be quite up to the top Tamiya quality but then the price will reflect that.
I spoke to the designer at TankFest '23 and said what I'd really like is a 1/48 Sea King to go with my Buccaneer I'd finished. The man is a true Magician (or Damien). I also asked for 1/48 Royal Navy Phantom, so next suprise new tool???
Brilliant! The only questions how many can I get away with? Obviously one will have to go with the Sea Vixen and the Buccaneer - but then I really want to do a SAR version... Hopefully a Junglie will appear in a couple of years time...
Very exciting not a helicopter person but that might make me think again, no it as 😊 l like them so much detail l will get but l think l will have to build a few more kits before taking this on, 😳am looking forward to see you do this one Gary look long and hard at them instruction mate 😵💫 good to hear from the guys at AIrfix about the process behind it all thanks for a great episode 👍
Yes I did. The team thought the most likely cause was a blockage in a tool - maybe a bit of plastic not taken out correctly which affected subsequent mouldings until it was cleared. Not great quality control though, which did seem to upset them. On the plus side it took the spares team only two days to send me a new one.
Raised rivets ARE possible. Like they did them on the Lynx which has very nice raised rivets, much up to scale than these recessed ones. I think they would like nicer, but anyhow already preordered it, very excited about the kit
@@julianmhall ofc it is possible. I've meant in the context of what was said - that it's not possible to get them in scale, which is. at list the same scale as these recessed rivets
No they didn't, but I'm guessing they will make the all-over yellow scheme in the future as it is so iconic, plus maybe a Belgian scheme and possibly commando too - very much like the 1/72.

BTW, if I were to go paint balling I'd take it far too seriously, ghillie suit and all. Apparently if you really despise someone the best thing to do is aim for the ears...
Very good job on the presentation; great job on the kit by Airfix. The Airfix people seem to have a real passion for what they do; the finished product reflects it.
It depends on the differences between the S-61N that BA used to operate and this Sea King. I suspect there are too many, but also depends on how accurate you want the BA kite to look. They say they are definitely NOT doing an S-61, not least of which reasons is that they would have to pay licensing fees.
Remember Airfix has a history of re-issues of slightly different variants in the 2nd and 3rd year of a product cycle. They key here was that they wanted to represent a single airframe in its variants - unusually the changes to variants were made on existing airframes by retro-fitting equipment, etc., rather than scrapping one mark and buying new ones. So I fully expect some different versions later down the line.
I'm hoping that it is clear that this is an entirely new mould, which is why I went to the effort of talking to the designer. Airfix wouldn't lay on a special event just for a new set of decals to an existing kit. You could also look on Scalemates to see that Airfix has never made a Sea King in 1/48 scale before.
Why did airfix bring out the wrong Gannet, as a fleet arm boy , I would have thought they would have released the Gannet aew4 , what were they thinking ffs ....
My guess (and it is only that) is that the earlier Gannet has more potential for second releases, especially in German and Indonesian colours. With the AEW.4 it is what it is and no more. But I share your disappointment in that the AEW is the version I most remember.
I'm not sure how much difference there is between this Westland Sea King and the Sikorsky VH-3 used as Marine One. They are sufficiently different that Airfix didn't have to pay licence fees to Sikorsky! You'd certainly be looking at losing the radomes but I don't know if the use of British engines makes any difference to the overall shape.
There is no reason to think they WON'T do other markings in later boxes of this - here the idea was to explore the markings and variants of one single airframe XV666. Having got a feel for how beloved the Sea King is in Belgium Airfix would be foolish not to include such markings in the 2nd air 3rd year re-box releases that feel inevitable.
