    As you were building the cockpit and interior i couldn't help but think of how this compares to the latest Avro Anson kit! Airfix have certainly improved their kits over the years! Congratulations on completing the kit. Fire up the Airfix coffee; you deserve a brew! At least the box lid fits ok

    I think you did a very good job wrestling that kit into shape, Gary. It really seems like an old school kit to me, engineering-wise, and very much from "the bad old days" of Airfix. I've nearly finished mine, and it's been a tough old beast to get right.

    Well done Gary your patience and perseverance, made the finished kit very acceptable in my book, after watching your build, I think I would not have same patience as yourself, something to leave alone I think.

    17:19 It isn't continuous as that roof cowling slides forward to allow access to to various fill points for hydraulic fluids etc. Sorry to harp on, but I worked on these and loved them.

      I do love a Lynx in general - I think one of the greatest and most unsung airframes this country has produced. I just don't know much about them on a day-to-day level and I didn't much enjoy making the kit! Good to hear from someone who really knows what they are talking about!!!

      @@garys_stuff My pleasure. And I totally agree with you, This airframe is sooo underrated historically. It was an absolute work horse during the Falklands war, flying many many hours without missing a beat (well my cab did lol). It's durability was also a great reflection on the quality of the engineers who maintained them.

    At 5:31 you are quite correct. It is an adjustment for the rudder pedals, in a car one adjusts the seat for leg room, on here one adjusts the rudder pedal distance.

    Hi the thing you asked about at 5:20 is indeed for the yaw pedals, it's called a Yaw Pedal Adjuster, you twist it in and out and it moves the yaw pedals back and forth for the individual pilots heights.
    I used to work on these and got a model, it's the first model i've ever built and i'm finding it to be quite difficult and fiddly, now i've seen your video I think I need some proper tools for it, expecially tweezers !!

    It's the nature of the beast, Gary. If a Swiss Army Knife could fly anti-surface or anti-sub missions, this is what it would look like. It just isn't the same same thing as assembling a fixed wing airframe and going "zoom!" through the air with it.
    I was having lunch on idyllic Catalina Island off Los Angeles when I noticed a shape starting to round the headland. It slid to a halt and dropped anchor just off the harbor entrance, dwarfing all the pleasure boats bobbing just offshore.
    It was big and gray and purposeful and lethal, an American destroyer, and there was no doubt what it was and what it's job was. It seemed to suck the sunlight right out of the sky.
    Exactly as your chopper. No colourful Hughes 500 flitting tourists around the Hawaiian Islands, this. It's a dedicated military machine and it makes no bones about its serious purpose.
    It isn't pretty and I think you caught the menace perfectly. Thanks for enduring.

    My opinion is it should of glue up first them painted later paint get into the joints causing the fit to cause seams once the paints dry the fit would not close up meaning the joint have large gaps which causes every thing to be out of sink and not square up in the body try test fits not rush the build rushing cause major issue in the build the molding as well could cause issue in my build everything get test fited glue even if you have to do a few videos on the build plus take your time on building I'm encouraging and supporting Ove the years of build I had lots of problem my self but studying my progress I gotten better

    • @garys_stuff
      @garys_stuff  Рік тому +1

      The majority of the parts were unpainted. They have been given a gentle coat of primer which I find useful in checking seam levels and so on. I do a lot of dry fitting. I sand over joints where I think the primer might affect the fit (which is pretty rare). I just couldn't get this thing to go together right. That's all. Part of the problem was getting the outer shell of the fuselage to marry up with the cockpit and cabin that had been built earlier, and I'm not sure dry fitting would have helped.Likewise the nose and windshield parts. I'm always open to the possibility that I've done things wrong - as you'll hear in my summary in this video - but I do want to make sure people don't grab one of these kits thinking it'll be easy because it isn't.

    The kit shouldn't be a 'skill level 4' just because it had some lousy fit issues.... I honestly hope that isn't the reason that Airfix gave it that rating, but it did seem to have a lot of parts that just didn't want to fit properly, and if they did, they left a large gap; I know Airfix are much better than this having made quite a few of their more recent kits, which are excellent! This looks to be more of the 'old' Airfix of the 60s, 70s, 80s, and 90s that I struggled through all those years ago!!
    Shame. However, you persevered and produced a lovely looking model at the end of it!! 🙂 👍
    Excellent! 👍

    • @garys_stuff
      @garys_stuff  Рік тому +2

      The SL4 comes from all sorts of thing, not just the fit! It is a fiddly little thing to put together and there's a lot of plastic left over at the end from all the different versions. Good thing our council recycle PS here!

    • @stevesstuff1450
      @stevesstuff1450 10 місяців тому

      @@garys_stuff : Well, a year later, and I'm in the middle of building it.....!! Yes, it really does seem to be a skill level 4 because parts just refuse to fit! And as you say, there are a lot of very fiddly little parts with comparatively massive sprue-gates and lugs which make them tricky to remove! The overall detail looks very good; nice and tiny rivets sticking out all over it, etc, but the main fuselage parts in my kit just refused to close-up above the cockpit and forward cabin area (internal ejector pin marks removed before hand), so I've had to resort to about a 1mm thick line of filler in that gap! 😞 Many of the locating pins and lugs are poorly shaped and so require careful re-shaping before they'll fit into the opening...
      In short, you can tell it's an older tooling from when Airfix were making huge jumps in quality, but still hadn't achieved the quality we know today - this certainly isn't anything close to the recent 1/48 Sea King; that was a complex kit, but not because of fit issues; it was a very straight forward, well designed/fitting kit; almost Tamiya-like in engineering! 😉
      This Lynx is nice, but yes, a challenge getting the bits to fit together!!
      I'm sure it'll look lovely under paint and decals........ Your's certainly does! 😉

  • @glencwilson
    @glencwilson Рік тому +1

    Finished model looks great but doesn't look fun or enjoyable to build. Wonder if the fit issue is because of how it has evolved from the original 2012 kit? Almost like they have made it easy to produce rather than easy to build like they do now. PE sets don't appear to replace those clear engine covers which you think they would.

Yes Quite a few gaps to fill using putty , and those foot pedals for me were the mark of a sadist ….nose cone area side panels another issue …but I learnt and overcame. Now this might seem a dumb question but..........some people say you must scrape away any paint before cementing together any parts, and yet I see yourself and others not doing this when using the thin cement - is it not necessary when using the thin cement??!!

    • @garys_stuff

    Lovely work on the build but sad to say you are completely wrong about the flying controls the collective lever of a lynx only provides inputs of collective pitch there is not twisting thrust capability. The increase in tq required for collective pitch increase is detected by a pitch anticipator and automatically increases engine tq output when collective is pulled

    I know you're not a fan Gary, but to me the gauze engine (inlet?) filters have photo etch written all over them, not clear plastic as Airfix have moulded them. IMHO pierced mesh photo etch sprayed a convincing colour by the modeller would look much better. TBH the whole model looks like the B-Team designed it, not up to Airfix normal quality.

      Seems odd to do it in transparent. Airfix don't do PE because it would bring the age recommendation up to 14+ apparently, so they tell us, but this piece is a bit odd. Maybe an empty frame would be better, in case one buys a PE set as well?
