Good breakdown. Many people don't understand a record label, or the music BUSINESS itself is a business first and foremost. A close friend of mine who was an employee of a major label told me more than 20 years ago that the music business is 90% business and 10% music. The truth is, anything that is creative that becomes a big business will eventually sacrifice some of it's creativity. It's like the owners of a mom and pop store having a close direct relationship with their employees, but if they become a big corporation, then they will have to adopt elements of a bureaucracy, because now it is too big for the heads to be directly related to the employees. The record label essentially gives you a loan against your career. Your potential career is basically collateral on the loan, which is understandable from a purely business perspective, because a major label can potentially invest millions of dollars in production, promotion, marketing, etc. so to stay viable entities, they have to get their money back first, the same way a bank loan is mostly interest the first few years. The truth is, there is not a single business in the world that just gives away millions of dollars and it isn't some from of investment. The creative side of music and the business side are dramatically different elements. If the artist is writing ALL of their own material, producing ALL of their own material, and performing ALL of their own material, then they get a bigger piece of the initial pie. But if labels are paying for that big name producer and big name music video director and the big name lyricists and ghostwriters, etc. then you as the artist are paying for that also.
If the artist is writing ALL of their own material, producing ALL of their own material, and performing ALL of their own material then why sign with a Record Label?
@@ericdavidwallacebecause the label focuses on the marketing aspects of things, not directly the music part. for the most part, a new and upcoming artist is not going to be able to cover touring, copywright issues, and profit from different ways of their music being used (i.e different streaming platforms). this is where the label comes in and deals with it at the EXPENSE of the artist giving a percentage of their royalties. the more money the artist makes, the less the label takes and the more each party benefits.

WHERE NOW, DOES THE MONEY ORIGINATE FROM, ORIGINATE FROM, ORIGINATE FROM -- did I say "originate from"? -- I'LL SAY IT AGAIN! NOWADAYS, IN TODAY'S RECORD INDUSTRY, WHERE DOES THE MONEY ORIGINATE FROM?!!!
Thank you for your feed back, record companies are way more complicated than your talking about. There is nothing simple about a record company....Not here to debate, that is my comment.
How about a non profit record label where everyone involved gets paid for their contribution including the CEO of the label except no profit is taken for the label itself? That way we can all get rich together instead of the company or corporation sucking it all in. That's the direction we need to go in...
Thank you for sharing and teaching us information about record labels, because of you I now have a little context about them. Thank you bro, learn everyday! Little by little... 😎👌
No matter how you get around it you still need a record label, unless you’re super rich you’re not going to beat the machine and the corporate giants: even if you can maintain a buzz and go viral independently it would be wise to still sign with a major label, because you can use your buzz to negotiate a nice deal in your favor, at that point you will most likely be in a bidding war where you can navigate the ship and control a cruise a little better. The hotter you are the better the treatment you’re gonna get. Unless you sitting on millions I would recommend signing with a label, just get an experience lawyer to review the contract before you sign anything
so a record label distributes, promotes and sells your music (and bunch of other stuff to), keeps a certain percentage of the revenue for themselves and gives the rest of it to the producer, right?
Thats what your team do, if you are a pro artist you have your own team before going to a record label, they are in charge of promoting your next album. The label just give you money so you can pay for studio time, shoot videos, pay your people and traveling. Source: T-Pain
Record labels have made a lot of artists stars, but the cost to the artist is ridiculous! We need to go back to the old, old days when wealthy aristocrats and socialites became patrons to musical artists and voluntarily financed the artists early careers purely out of love for the art. But, unfortunately, the socialites and aristocrats we have today seem only to be interested in promoting themselves as personalities in reality shows, ,clothing and cosmetic lines, and social media and such. EVERYBODY wants to be a star!
I have a question would they give you all the money then tell you what to pay them or will they just take. There percentage before they give you the check
Hi, thanks for all the information. This was helpful. I'm an unsigned Artist and I'm faced with a situation where a label is keen to work with me, but not really sure if their terms are fair or not - 1) 50/50 profit sharing 2) I need to pay for the recordings 3) Marketing costs to be borne by the label And obviously there's no guarantee that it'll be successful, which is understandable. Any suggestions/advice will be highly appreciated. Cheers.
I got a Question ⁉️ does a record labels request money from a new artist to sign a contract ... for an example they ask a new artist for $350 to $400 to get the contract drawn up so they can arrange the signature ...
10-20% of their money? Is that not a steal? Edit: I'm so confused it says they pay for everything but then you pay it all back? So a record label is like a loan? So a record label for music is like a student loan for education? Is a record label needed for the artists that get big? Or do they usually have one? Just wondering
Yes a record deal that you get from a record label is in fact a high interest loan. So when an artist seeks out a deal that has more traction and has done more ground work he/she can get, in a more simple phrase, a lower interest rate. If you want to go mainstream and not viral you will need a record label because they hold the keys to everything!

So it's a 80/20 split in favor of the record label, with all costs for producing is for the artist to pay from that 20%. Omg. Thanks for the info. Artists should really find creative ways around this daylight robbery, the split should really be the other way around, because as an artist, I should get to choose who I want to give the 20% to. Someone started the reverse business model and the rest (most times Artists themselves) jumped onto the wagon to do the exact same rip off on new Artists. Thanks for your explanations on this.
