Hey Casey, this video popped up in my feed. I’m an entertainment attorney and I wanted to take the time to say that you did a good job of understanding the concepts, organizing it, using the correct vernacular and laying it out for people to understand. 👍🏻 ☺️
@@MusicMoneyMakeover For sure. I can see you have taken a great deal of time to study this subject matter and I appreciate the hard work you put into your platform. Let me know if you ever have any questions.
I'm not the biggest fan of his music but Russ is a shining example of an artist who built a huge catalogue he owned that got slept on for years. But now he's multi platinum and traveling the globe. No middlemen. No labels. Young artists should follow his example. He managed to remain independent, get richer than most label rappers, and make songs with legendary artists after getting the money to pay for features himself instead of with advances.
The route I went was actually trying to buy everything outright and buy exclusive beats through beat stars and just negotiate 100percent it helps if you know a person who records and mixes Then you can just pay for that
Actually you can read in the form, the employer becomes the author. If you get hired to do a job, you are not the owner of the work, and your employer becomes the author. As an analogy, think how a programmer that works for a bank writes code, but the code belongs to the bank. And the author is listed a Bank YNZ.
From what I’ve heard of masters, it’s very difficult for an artist to retain ownership of the master recordings if a record company is footing the bill for the studio time, producer, engineer, musicians, etc. It seems to me artists are better off if they can make money from some other venture, first, then pay the costs of production of their recorded works out of their own pocket. But, I know that’s easier said than done.
This was the most clear explanation of owning a created work I have found on youtube. It is a VERY complex business. I think that is by design to favor the business over the artist. I also think the digital age has helped the artist but they are still at the bottom and being stolen from. Streaming should pay more for starters.
From my understanding of the US copyright law (and our filings), transfer of ownership and work-for-hire are two separate things. For example, there's certain criteria under the ACT which qualifies a work to be work-for-hire, and in this case, a transfer agreement is not signed. You need to make this distinction clear.
I stumbled across your page and wow, it's all i've been asking for. It's so informative. Learn from R.K. my dude, his illiteracy cost him hundreds of millions of dollars. Although one might argue with how his reputation is getting trashed in this trial that his masters/publishing are pretty much worthless at this stage, unless he dies suspiciously.
Also, if your in school you can ask a professor to help you. They love giving advice and showing off their knowledge. Most importantly NEVER sign anything without a fiduciary to advise you. They are reasonably priced and are legally required to tell you the truth about a record contract before you sign.
With your understanding of the business and contracts, you would be a good person to do a corollary, on Prince’s famous vault, and the “talk” that he died intestate, and what we can expect in the future regarding his work.
Hello, very good info. I appreciate the video. I have 1 question: I am working out a deal with a label and have agreed on a % of payment that comes from any plays it ends up getting. They want to automate this payment, so how can I set up an account for those payments to come back to? Is there a special thing artists use for that or is it supposed to go back to my personal bank account? Or, is there another way or service for that that I am missing?

Finally yes it will become public domain if the copyrights are not renewed on time once they expire.
Yes I think it’d be on contract at time of signing who owns the music you make under this label & how it will be distributed (points, percentages & ownership) Some labels allow artist to retain ownership as long as you hold up your end of the deal or provide “x” amount of something. Whereas some labels will only give you a percentage (360 deals🤮)
I completely understand what you’re saying. Here’s my thing, I don’t want to own the producer’s intellectual property.
