I think he felt that ever since he neared the castle land, Harker experienced some things he couldn’t explain. As a pragmatist and an ambitious professional, he was in denial of these happenstances, and chose to dismiss them for the sake of closing the deal.
Read the book before posting comments. Harker was shitting his pants the whole time. He was told not to go to the castle or Dracula's regions he soon understood why, and his journey within Transylvania before getting there was out of this world. The man long shat his pants. He already knew why his boy went insane. Fear kept him in line. Just read the book.
First time I watched this, I had no idea what I was going to see. Was just invited to go see a movie at the theater with friends. I couldn't have been more pleasantly surprised it was this movie.
I remember actually sitting down and watching this a good few years ago. I was incredibly impressed. I can only imagine how this was in theaters for people. Everything about the film would have been mesmerizing I bet.
at 2:35 when Dracula says " I am the last of my kind" and casts his shadow on the chair where Jonathan sits creeps me out every time since the first time I watched the movie.
The staff wears their hair up in buns & is salty af!! This dude got a sword pulled on him for laughing at his waiter's face mole. Yes it is a laughing matter. Where is my toast?!
@@pbxn-3rdx-85percent That could sell. Blood sausage & beer would be great. Of course, at Dracula's Diner, all the blood is kept in a Rubbermade trash barrel in the walk-in. Dracula just kills the health inspector every time they send one out. It pretty much goes like this with a few changes.
rendering them both inhuman was a mistake. It would have been better if we had a stronger contrast between these two. Jonathan Harker is not an emotionless person who does his job like a robot.
In those days it was quite common for someone to draw a weapon on you in an instance like that. It's a threat that means "if you continue this train of thought then I am going to duel and kill you or just simply kill you." Harkers laugh was interpreted as a derisive dismissal of Draculas story and ancestry by Dracula. Which in those days when talking to a noble would easily send them flying into a rage. In that moment Dracula could have injured and sent Harker packing to which nobody would bat an eye. Harker would simply be fired and the firm would send someone else. Blue bloods (a derogatory term for nobles or any royalty) were still a thing when this book takes place and the "nobility" still held a lot of power. What you see here looks out of place to us because now murder is illegal as well as duels and ideally nobody noble or otherwise is above the law. But back then it was pretty much the opposite. You could challenge someone to a duel back then and even potentially kill them as well(depending on where the duel takes place and when). People would see it as a matter of honor and pride. As opposed to nowadays where we see Draculas reaction as out of place and unproportional. Just some context as to why Harker didn't flip out at having a weapon drawn on him. Nobody except him would care and they would see it as his fault for insulting Dracula.
@@theredblurb132 I actually understood that Harker was smiling at the note that count's relationship with Christ was not so successful - it made me smile, too. That's why I didn't understand the count's reaction. Because it was count's choice to rebel against God...

Clearly, unequivocally THE best Dracula movie of all time. Oldmans portrayal was simply mesmerizing and how he didn’t win an Oscar, I’ll never understand. This is my favourite movie version of Dracula. It was the closest to the novel then (with a few liberties taken such as merging Vlad Tepes with Dracula and making it more of a love story between Mina and Dracula were welcome touches). Gary Oldman's performance, the train scene, the costumes, atmosphere, and practical effects make it a timeless classic. Francis Ford Coppola did a remarkable job. The Netflix live action series starring Claes Bang is also very good and worth your time.
Man this movie would of been PERFECT if they went with Johnny Depp as planned for the roll of Jonathan Harker. Liam Neeson auditioned as Van Helsing but Hopkins got first dibs which wasn't a bad thing he still did a great job.
Oh my God, can you imagine if Johnny Depp was in this instead of Reeves? This movie could've been an even bigger masterpiece. I wish to think that somewhere out there exists a universe where that did happen.
When Dracula mentions Attila, he really does mean Attila the Hun. In the book, if I remember right, Dracula claims to descend from Attila and I think it’s easy for people to miss this here if they don’t understand who Attila is or mishear Dracula. Just adds to Dracula’s own feelings of superiority.
@@anitakotevska9787 Yes, it is. A lot of the dialogue in this scene is taken directly from the book. In the book he tells Harker that his family has a right to be proud, and goes on to list all his warrior ancestors. Basically he's descended from every warrior tribe in Europe, from the Viking Berserkers, to the savage Magyars, to the Huns, including Attila, and Dracula brags about how intelligent and noble his Szkely ancestors were (Dracula's family name, pronounced sha-kye-ee) and how much the common people feared them. I mean, he's not wrong.
@@anitakotevska9787 And he definitely has a superiority complex - when Harker asks him why he purchased Carfax Abbey, he says that it was for it's chapel, as he is a nobleman and does not wish for his body to "lie among the common dead." (He's referring to his undead body, of course, but Harker doesn't know that) He also orders Harker to help him practice speaking English - when Harker says in astonishment that Dracula already speaks excellent English, Dracula replies that he wishes to be even more fluent in English than the English themselves, because he cannot bear the thought of anyone being better at something than he is. Vlad is really quite a snob and thinks very highly of himself.

Jonathan is acting so "calm" cause of the things he has seen before he entered the castle. I believe he was in shock when Dracula came at him like that and didn't want to piss him off more or show his true emotions. We have to acknowledge that Jonathan was fearless in the movie.
4:46 I actually always cry when seeing this moment from Gary Oldman you can really feel his heartbreak and part of me feels a deep down inside, he knew he had made a mistake, renouncing, God, and part of him still loved him as I feel Elizabetha would have wanted him to remain by gods side defending the church.

Interesting interpretation, but I think you may be injecting your own faith into Dracula's perspective. Although Dracula is clearly unhappy with his cursed and eternal un-life, I would agree that he does carry a lot of regret - not for his own decision, but for the circumstances. The important thing to remember is that Dracula did not renounce God because his wife died. He renounced God because suicide is a big sin in Christianity, and since that's how Elizabeta died - she was sent to Hell.
I love this movie, I think the colors were beautiful, and the entire aura of it was very dreamlike. I also found surprising how much I actually kind of sided with Dracula, although I wish Jonathan wasn’t as involved in this.
Dracula and Harker scenes always gave me goosebumps I just thought it was a matter of time before he would jump at him and drain him dry Harker would only be lucky at night and day cause Dracula sleeps his protectors likely would bury him alive

Anyone with common sense will turn back and run the moment they set eye on the count.. This scene is hilarious to me.
He was terrified just trying not to show it as later scenes reveal
I think he felt that ever since he neared the castle land, Harker experienced some things he couldn’t explain. As a pragmatist and an ambitious professional, he was in denial of these happenstances, and chose to dismiss them for the sake of closing the deal.
Read the book before posting comments. Harker was shitting his pants the whole time.
He was told not to go to the castle or Dracula's regions he soon understood why, and his journey
within Transylvania before getting there was out of this world. The man long shat his pants. He already knew
why his boy went insane. Fear kept him in line. Just read the book.

God Gary Oldman blows me away every time!! He’s so damn good!!

I love how he's still chewing on the chicken while having a sword waved at him 🤣
🤣
at 2:35 when Dracula says " I am the last of my kind" and casts his shadow on the chair where Jonathan sits creeps me out every time since the first time I watched the movie.
I always suspected that Keanu Reeves was a foreigner. It's nice to hear him in his natural, native British accent.
His American accent in his other movies was spot on.

Keanu tripping for going inside when Dracula answering the door like he gonna have him for Dessert .. no way buddy
That portrayal is terrifying. Yet, Keanu's character doesn't seem put off. I'd be running for the hills after that first sword incident.
rendering them both inhuman was a mistake. It would have been better if we had a stronger contrast between these two. Jonathan Harker is not an emotionless person who does his job like a robot.
Keanus character is "Totally" oblivious
In those days it was quite common for someone to draw a weapon on you in an instance like that. It's a threat that means "if you continue this train of thought then I am going to duel and kill you or just simply kill you."
Harkers laugh was interpreted as a derisive dismissal of Draculas story and ancestry by Dracula.

1:40 Gary Oldman isn't acting. He just had enough of Keanu Reeves' (let's be honest) atrocious "English" accent and decided murder was the only solution. And Coppola is behind the camera pleading with him to calm down.
Keanu's acting in this movie is horrifying.
@@rafrosenberg5408 Yes, but it really doesn't matter all that much. Oldman's brilliant Dracula is completely lethal, feral, obsessed and batshit. Harker is a pawn in a much larger game, to which he is oblivious. All an actor has to do in this part is to keep breathing, say his lines, and hit his marks, like George Kittridge in "The Philadelphia Story" and Edgar Linton in "Wuthering Heights."

The theater I went to when I saw the Devil's Advocate, people were crying along with him when Charlize Theron died. There was total silence when he started screaming in that scene.
If some crazy old man goes nuts and swings a sword around, the real-estate deal is off and I am out of there!
It was not his decision he was jusr there to sign a deal. And besides where to run to? He's in a castle on a top of the mountain.
insert Hanna-Barbera cartoons sound effect.
Keanu wasn't fazed there. Being a real estate agent he's seen plenty of loonies in his time. Never batted an eye and kept his professionalism.
If the comission is good enough, I might take my chances
The luckiest is the man who walks on this earth is the one who finds true love.
I came for these lines.
At first I thought "When was there a diner in Dracula's castle?"
I like to picture the Count rushing around the kitchen to cook this meal just before Jonathan arrives, like Robin Williams in Mrs. Doubtfire.
Gary Oldman terrific as the Count.

Dracula has a sense of humor when he says of good taste.
I can't watch this scene anymore without laughing at those agonizing screams and thinking they are actually the film crew members' reactions to Keanu's acting.
The ambient sound add a lot to this movie especially the women's voices. It's like you are surrounded by ghosts through the movie when Dracula is in a scene.

He should have won the oscar.

I meant Gary oldman but yeah Keanu all day as well.
Gary Oldman kicks ass as Dracul. With a coorectly castes Jonathan these scenes could have been truly epic.
I remember when the first time I watched this movie, that "shadow" really creeps me out !
And it still does every time I see this Scene
Finally just saw this for the first time. Don’t know why bust this welcome/intro scene made me emotional. Probably also because I have been musing on ‘vampiric standoffs’ for the past two weeks. The invitation and entry, after the gathering of his shadow behind him, one of the best scenes ever. It was so respectfully done, sacred to the text and to the ritual of it all.
Clearly, unequivocally THE best Dracula movie of all time. Oldmans portrayal was simply mesmerizing and how he didn’t win an Oscar, I’ll never understand. The performances of all the other actors, were also spectacular. All of their efforts... painstakingly mentored, massaged, blended together and directed by the genius that is Francis Ford Coppola.
What a masterpiece!

I've always appreciated Max Schrek's (Willem Dafoe's) take on this scene in the film 'Shadow of the Vampire.' He say's something like "It makes me sad. Imagine having to remember dining etiquette and social niceties after you have been in the wild for hundreds of years. What to wear. How to act. How to prepare and cook a meal. A creature powerful beyond imagining demoted to 'Guest Host.'" (shakes his head) So sad. ~Good stuff.

Gary Oldman's acting is phenomenal
When Dracula mentions Attila, he really does mean Attila the Hun. In the book, if I remember right, Dracula claims to descend from Attila and I think it’s easy for people to miss this here if they don’t understand who Attila is or mishear Dracula. Just adds to Dracula’s own feelings of superiority.
is that true? that he descends from Attila?
@@anitakotevska9787 Yes, it is. A lot of the dialogue in this scene is taken directly from the book. In the book he tells Harker that his family has a right to be proud, and goes on to list all his warrior ancestors. Basically he's descended from every warrior tribe in Europe, from the Viking Berserkers, to the savage Magyars, to the Huns, including Attila, and Dracula brags about how intelligent and noble his Szkely ancestors were (Dracula's family name, pronounced sha-kye-ee) and how much the common people feared them. I mean, he's not wrong.
@@chooseyourpoison5105 wow i didn't know that
@@anitakotevska9787 And he definitely has a superiority complex - when Harker asks him why he purchased Carfax Abbey, he says that it was for it's chapel, as he is a nobleman and does not wish for his body to "lie among the common dead." (He's referring to his undead body, of course, but Harker doesn't know that) He also orders Harker to help him practice speaking English - when Harker says in astonishment that Dracula already speaks excellent English, Dracula replies that he wishes to be even more fluent in English than the English themselves, because he cannot bear the thought of anyone being better at something than he is.

That outburst would have walked me out ASAP!! Most unusual indeed!
