My AA Yellow Vitesse hasn’t cost me a dime in the 3 years I’ve had it. I mean I haven’t started it in those 3 years so that may be why.
Nobody is ever ready for classic Range Rover ownership.
25 years old is considered "classic"?
Not even the classic Range Rovers are ready for themselves
@@CrackedCandybelieve the rule is 20years to qualify as classic
"You should know it exacts a terrible price." "I am prepared." "We all think that at first. We are all wrong."
@@CrackedCandy Generally yes. From both an insurance, registration, and importing perspective 25 years is a benchmark in many places have a car having status as a classic car.
On an engineering level, the typical car is only designed to be on the road for 10 years before end of life recycling.
my favorite thing to do is let vinwiki post for a couple months and build up videos, and then i go on a 2 or 3 hour(at least) binge! this is that time, thanks VinWiki!
Sounds like you're in for a good day then 😊
@@yes3858 heck yeah man!
Same here hahahaha
Haha likewise bro 😂

As a kid I heard a family friend who was a mechanic once say "Don't ever buy a car made in Britian or France unless you live in those countries at the time of ownership". Those words have always stuck with me....for good reason.
i hate french (cars)

I remember P38s costing a bloody fortune to run when they were less than 5 years old. Colour me surprised they never got better as they got older.
Boy do I sympathize with this situation and the mind set to own a luxury SUV. My 2005 LX470 just turned 410,000 miles and the orignal alternator just went out...how horrible. Two calipers and one u joint its entire past history of replaced parts. Fluid changes and regular maintenance are a constant chore (every 5,000 mile). It constantly get me where i needed in comfort and luxury. I love it even though its a pain.
No you bought a Range Rover, the "mechanical asshole" of vehicles. They are the Dominatrix of the automotive world and it will make sure you learn a lesson. I never feel bad for people that buy any Rovers.
Well said, lol
I love your answer 😂
Land Rovers can take you into the wilderness. Land Cruisers will bring you home.
At its next oil change my 2004 GX470 will have done 400k.....when I see these, x5s, Mercs, I actually laugh. To be fair, I've just had to replace the oem center exhaust section, sucks to live in the rust belt....
Think positively. You won’t have to change that alternator again til 820,000 miles. 😂
Pray your starter doesn’t go out. It’s in the worst place imaginable.
My P38 felt like it ALWAYS had issues and I was always working on it, but it has to be one of the best cars I ever owned. I regret selling it all the time. Even in a small SUV compared to modern SUVs, those massive windows make you feel like you’re on top of everything. Such an underrated car - even with allll those reliability issues
Is that the Layer Cake range rover ?
I'm British 🇬🇧 so can attest that we always replace our P38's engine and body at least twice every 5 years !! 😳🤷♂️😆
I think the Layer Cake one is the Borego edition, I could be wrong though I have not seen the movie in a while. Borego edition is pretty rare, only 100 made.
@@oficina_moomooI think it was closer to 500 I had a list on Vin wiki
@@porsche928s4 I just took a look and looks like 250 Vitess which is what the guy in the video has. Gems Engine I think 1997. Then there were only 100 Borego which were final edition in 2002 and Motronic (Bosh) Engine
What kills the engines? I would have thought the old Rover V8 would be pretty reliable.
@@mattagnew206 head gaskets usually
Anyone who still buys a Range Rover after Doug's video series is a masochist !
Why, why, why, would you keep replacing the same terrible engine when you could LS Swap it ??
Or just get a Lexus LX......jeeeez
Esp knowing the rover 4.0 and 4.6 is based off a gm block! Ls is the only way to go in these.
Best thing you can do is put an LS in it and a tremec drivetrain. And then you're reliability will go through the roof at least moving under its own power, the rest of it will fall apart though.
Would have been a better use of that 5 figure repair bill
naw that's not true
@@Nyx_88888 What?
Just about impossible to keep the bcem operating without the gems ecm happy. Almost impossible to engine swap these trucks.
@@me6067when did anyone talk about a truck?
Those are awesome. A friend of mine had one exactly like that in Des Moines, IA years back. A group of us ended up owning P38s. I loved mine, sold it running/driving with 204k miles with a working air suspension (previous owner actually rebuilt it instead of swapping to coils).
Ah yes Land Rover reliability. I came for entertainment purposes. On a related note, one of my favorite cars I have owned turned out to be a money pit as well. Yes, I enjoyed every second.
Jack Black definitely knew what he was getting into but still learned his lesson the hard way 😵
Lmao 😂
Reliability of the pre Bosch P38 4.6 is non existent. Then along came Bosch and remained non existent.
Clattery engine, noisy compressor, self oiling valley gaskets and nocturnal self lowering suspension...for 10 years but I loved my 2002 as well. 😢
Fantastic looking SUV! Such a shame that there’s no reasonable way to own one at this point.
As a BMW owner, this makes me feel slightly better about my decisions
The yellow P38 look really really good! Having owned a later p38, I do miss ownership… 😢
Nothing says, "I have more money than sense" then driving a Land Rover.
i used to have a 2002 LR Discovery II and it got *6 miles to the gallon* then blew the head gasket while it was warming up in my driveway
Long live the L322 Autobiography.
"The ability to drive them anywhere and get there comfortably."
Riiiiight.
I remember our neighbors buying a p38 in the late 1990's, it drove about two weeks before being permanently disabled 😂
Had this same exact make model color back in the early 2000s. My older brother surprisingly found the red 1 before that..this was hands down the worst headache I've ever owned. Comingclose to the dreadful bmw 745 some years later .constant coolant issues. 2 replaced transmissions..but it stood out and I loved this thing to death
My former boss and now customer drives JLR cars. Yes, they are crap, but comfortable and safe as hell. He clocks up quite a few miles, yes, he replaced a couple transmissions and engines in his cars, but he survived two horrible crashes in them virtually unscathed. One was a totally freak accident when a flash flood swiped the highway clean, his Jag SUV flipped several times, he and his then 3 year old son were pulled out of the wreck in the very last moment before it got washed away into deeper water. Not even a scratch. Second one was a head on collision with a driver who fell asleep at the wheel, same thing, walked away from the crash. He does replace them with a new one as soon as the bumper-to-bumper dealer warranty ends though, he fears post-warranty ownership of them...
I worked at a larger multibrand dealership and we literally just stopped selling Range Rovers, they had so many problems the dealer would lose thousands on them coming back under warranty. When one was traded in we didnt even look at it, just went straight to auction.
There are stories like these about P38s but then there is also stories of people with 300 and even 400k miles on them. Some going on 250-300 on original not rebuilt engine and plenty with 150- 200k. These are super cool, great 90s styling and unlike the classics, super comfortable inside and it does not RUST like all other land rover models. LR built this car right after the classics suffered from crippling rust. But not going to lie there is a lot of gremlins and they are usually all electric problems. However when sorted, they are actually pretty good cars. A lot of stuff can be fixed at home and its not very expensive. However yes if you take it to a Land Rover mechanic you are going to cry. The air suspension fails a lot but its not a complicated fix, parts are cheap and works great.
Also this yellow one is a Gems which is the first version of the p38s, it has EVEN more electrical gremils than the later models which are Bosh, the Bosh models 99-2002 are way more reliable with less electric issues so that is what I would buy (what am I saying, I have one lol, 2002 4.6 HSE with 171k miles and its running well, for now :), it drives like a tractor but I love it, I dunno what it is about it but its great).
well you see there is 2 types of ppl and thats ppl who owned a Range Rover and talked honestly about the pile of junk they owned hoping to warn other ppl to not waste their money then there is ppl who currently own it and will lie their pants off just to sell it... its not that they're dishonest ppl but its either they lie or they lose their house with all the debt they're in....
thanks to Doug we now know that you NEVER buy one without a bumper to bumper warranty, you do have a bumper to bumper warranty right???
I have a Diesel with 440K kms and a 4.6 with 290k kms. Once you figure out the regular issues these are great cars.
It gets more and more reliable, as more money I put in 😂
Maybe if you replace all the land rover range rover parts with something else.
The layer cake range Rover, i remember when this thing was for sale also looking for a bright yellow range Rover p38
This reminds me of the wrap-up video Doug DeMuro did detailing all the repairs covered by the bumper-to-bumper on the Rover he bought from CarMax. 😅
Purdey edition was the ‘best’ edition of the 38. We had one as a family car back in the early noughties I think
Two transmissions, two engines and rust… utterly insane for a vehicle of that cost back then
There is no such thing as a cheap range rover. The key to keeping a Range Rover on the road is keeping up with all the maintenance. Also, P38's have been notorious, as the least reliable Range Rover ever made. I have a SC L322 from 2012 and I still dump money into it. The only positives are that if you can keep from paying dealer prices, you can find every part used for cheap, so if you are thinking about buying a used Range Rover, then find yourself a mechanic you trust or get good at turning wrenches.
YOU SHOULD HAVE BOUGHT THE BUMPER TO BUMPER WARRANTY
Our 4.0V8 Range Rover P38 does 24 mpg and has been very reliable for the last several years!
Lose the key and you lose the car 🤣🤣🤣
Les at Classic Rides North Wales can make you a spare fob key. It’s the Disco II style with the fob in the head but it works perfectly. My ‘01 came with just one key when I bought it and I had Les make me two spares immediately.
Learned the hard way about the immobilizer on my P38 in a back alley. Took about a month to finally solve the lock code and get her back on the road - a disconnected driver door lock didn’t make it any easier. I feel like anyone that has owned a classic Range has sooo many stories, good and bad🤣
Have keys cut for the egnition and keep the immobilizer tucked into the trim by the keyhole/near the reader.
I have a P38 2.5 BMW motor in it. But had to laugh, i had all the issues you had. Even locked me out and had to send my BECM to Ian at WeRP38s in Wales. He did a great job. Heater matrix o rings failed on. Awful job and the blend motors went too. Under going air suspension issues as we speak. The car is such a likable car and gets you hooked but not sure why!
Hope is a hell of a drug.
P.S. Tile, AirTag, any and all gps trackers need to be attached to that key! Haha
thats an insanely good idea!! Nice! Well....not all of them. Just maybe the airtag haha
This guy's definition of reliable is very forgiving.
Needs the Doug DeMuro carmax bumper to bumper warranty
My parents had a British Racing Green 1998 model year (10/97 build) P38 4.6 HSE in 2003-2004 and it had 136,000km (84,000mi). Lovely to ride in and look at but that car was unfortunately a total disaster. Cracked engine block where it needed a new engine due to incorrect heat treating when it was originally produced in October 1997 (I wonder if this one had a similar issue early on), various issues with the brakes, air-conditioning, electrics and it leaked oil everywhere for every day we had it. The only thing that didn’t fail on ours was the air suspension amazingly enough. We only had it for 9 months. It got traded to a new Toyota Landcruiser 4.7. 19 years later, still going strong.
Clearfield, PA is not just outside of Pittsburgh. 😂
After my 3 l322s adventure i can confidently say the the repairs will never end
I daily a 1990 Classic with a 5 speed conversion. Had an L322 before that nothing will ever make you a more skilled wrench then Rover ownership.
When I got remote starter in my car, they used the chip of my key and placed inside an adapter inside the car.
Could something similar solve his problem?
I guess if you lose that one key you'd just have to rip the whole powertrain out and throw an LS in there
Maybe you should throw cash out the window while your driving it also
🤠 even the news one are holding true to the classics 🍋
My neighbor on the south shore had one. Wonder if this is the one?
Layer Cake movie had this car on the dvd cover ❤
"welcome to the layer cake, son."
Work on an old porsche and you'll be amazed at the engineering and precision that went into building them...work on an old range rover and you'll be amazed at the amount of alcohol that must have been consumed on the production line
My buddy had that ranger rover in law school. It was so cool. He got rid of it because it had so many issues. He owned it for 2 hears and drove it for 3 months continuously.
I have one with a 3.0d M57 and its great!
There gotts be someone that can clone that key or figure out how to replace the immobilizer to something newer so you can make it push to start or just a newer ignition.
Good morning Vinwiki!!
And I thought constantly replacing 4L60e's in my '98 Suburban was expensive.
After 2 transmissions, I finally manual swapped it for less than the cost of having the 4l60e rebuilt again (The trans was out of warrenty at this point.)
Would you all be interested in a story about how a fire fighters 2 near death encounters in 8 years of being in fire service was just on the truck getting to and from a call?
Clearfield is big woods country ha,flay between Pittsburgh and Buffalo. 3 hours from each.
And that's why we own Series 1 Discos. 205k miles and still driven weekly.
I think he saw Layer Cake before deciding to buy that Range Rover
I would safety wire that key into the ignition switch and call it good
Clearfield PA hahaha. I find it fascinating that a 1 of 250 range rover was, of all places in Clearfield FUCKING Pennsylvania.
Been there, done that, it bites (Classics, P38, L322s, and L405), but Range Rovers are still something unique one has to experience to understand. $1000/month is not uncommon for any generation Range Rover, so buyers beware.
Can confirm
I don't even see Range Rovers in the hood. An old S-Class or 7-Series seems to be as much unreliability as hood drivers will accept.
LEGO recently released a Land Rover model kit and there is a joke going around that the LEGO kit will probably spend less time in bits than the real thing...
I have a neighbor with a p38 and man if you look at weird something will break.
goodness gracious. thats like personal light aircraft level of operational cost x)
so basically the dude just said lets have a "rarer than a gt3rs" as my daily commuter
I would keep the key hid in the car and have a dead man switch so it couldn’t be stolen.
Should have kept the GT3
The thing with JLR cars that many people aren't ready for is the inside repair costs. You expect things to go wrong, but you don't expect Bentley-level prices to fix them.
I hope I can put it on the black card one day 😅
He should of just put a chevy ls engine in it.
Just get the chip in the existing key cloned… worked fine in my 96 honda
When he said caahr I knew it was a homie
The layer cake Range Rover. I loved my old p38 sadly new front bearings and a. Transfer case beat me. The key to the becsm. Is to disconnect the aerial on the rear window.
The Layer Cake/Kick Ass car😃
"Clearfield, just outside of Pittsburgh"... Yeah... It's only a 3 hour drive if you take the fast route. Did you hit up Denny's Beer Barrel and Pub? Try out one of their stupidly large burgers? If you ever go there, try the normal burgers and hope someone else will try the challenge burger... Their normal ones are fantastic.
Range Rovers are like the least reliable cars ever and people always seem shocked when they're pieces of crap
True words my friend! Some of my customers are Range/Land Rover drivers and I really can say, those cars are crap. Its just marketing and status…but hey, at least I get money when I repair them 😂
Getting rid of the impossibly reliable Porsche for the Range Rover was the absolute correct decision.
Did he say he got rid of it
Kappa
Didn't realize Jack Black finally shaved and is into cars as well. On a serious note, I thought I was ready for an RRC ownership after having owned one land rover. I wasn't.
My dad owns a 99 p38 for 13 years he replaced every thing
If you look up "Genius" in the dictionary you definitely won't see this guy's picture.
had a 97 hse for about a year. worst mistake of my life. was always something and God forbid if the battery went dead. then it would turn into a brick. can't even get it into neutral to push it if the battery is dead. don't even ask how i found that one out. i mean i can see owning one if i had enough money to own a football team, but im just a blue collar guy forget about it. ended up buying a ,v8 awd, 98 mountaineer for 1200 bucks. i might have put 600 bucks in it over the last 5 years.
I listen to this interview and can’t help but think, “I should buy one of these.” I bet I’m not the only one.
Nice sponsor plug at the end, sounds like you're talking through a pillow Ed....
On VinWiki today, Jack Blacks son.
Anyone watching this channel would build an engine in a hotel room. We all drive some sort of garbage that needs a new drivetrain, or we all spend way too much money on that garbage!
Layer cake yellow 😂 if you know, you know.
Getting anywhere reliably and comfortably can be done in a Lexus ffs, people buy them cuz they get successfully marketed too and like the look/image of the damn things lol
Isn’t that Land Rover the same as Dennis from It’s always Sunny in Philadelphia?
Ed……is that an old Rolls Royce you’re driving at the end????!!! That’s a TERRIBLE financial decision. I love it!! 😂😂
I was pondering which classic too, but not familiar with interior roof lines of classic european cars.
@@russelljacob7955 The C-pillar mirrors are a dead giveaway.
An old School Shad.
P38s are my favourite!
Good story but the Vitesse was certainly not the most desirable P38. Everyone liked the later production 2002 models with the newer 4.6, especially the borrego edition, Callaway, Holland & Holland, or Overfinch.
Ok, so 1k a month for 25 years is 300k. Plus 100k depreciation 400k. Just why?
Because it is yellow
Exactly
Because of status and marketing fucked brains 😂
Getting a strange urge to watch Layer Cake
really not that bad by range rover standards
Your idea of a low key reliable car was an old yellow rover? 😂
