Boy do I sympathize with this situation and the mind set to own a luxury SUV. My 2005 LX470 just turned 410,000 miles and the orignal alternator just went out...how horrible. Two calipers and one u joint its entire past history of replaced parts. Fluid changes and regular maintenance are a constant chore (every 5,000 mile). It constantly get me where i needed in comfort and luxury. I love it even though its a pain.

My former boss and now customer drives JLR cars. Yes, they are crap, but comfortable and safe as hell. He clocks up quite a few miles, yes, he replaced a couple transmissions and engines in his cars, but he survived two horrible crashes in them virtually unscathed. One was a totally freak accident when a flash flood swiped the highway clean, his Jag SUV flipped several times, he and his then 3 year old son were pulled out of the wreck in the very last moment before it got washed away into deeper water. Not even a scratch. Second one was a head on collision with a driver who fell asleep at the wheel, same thing, walked away from the crash. He does replace them with a new one as soon as the bumper-to-bumper dealer warranty ends though, he fears post-warranty ownership of them...

There are stories like these about P38s but then there is also stories of people with 300 and even 400k miles on them. Some going on 250-300 on original not rebuilt engine and plenty with 150- 200k. These are super cool, great 90s styling and unlike the classics, super comfortable inside and it does not RUST like all other land rover models. LR built this car right after the classics suffered from crippling rust. But not going to lie there is a lot of gremlins and they are usually all electric problems. However when sorted, they are actually pretty good cars. A lot of stuff can be fixed at home and its not very expensive. However yes if you take it to a Land Rover mechanic you are going to cry. The air suspension fails a lot but its not a complicated fix, parts are cheap and works great.
Also this yellow one is a Gems which is the first version of the p38s, it has EVEN more electrical gremils than the later models which are Bosh, the Bosh models 99-2002 are way more reliable with less electric issues so that is what I would buy (what am I saying, I have one lol, 2002 4.6 HSE with 171k miles and its running well, for now :), it drives like a tractor but I love it, I dunno what it is about it but its great).

There is no such thing as a cheap range rover. The key to keeping a Range Rover on the road is keeping up with all the maintenance. Also, P38's have been notorious, as the least reliable Range Rover ever made. I have a SC L322 from 2012 and I still dump money into it. The only positives are that if you can keep from paying dealer prices, you can find every part used for cheap, so if you are thinking about buying a used Range Rover, then find yourself a mechanic you trust or get good at turning wrenches.

Lovely to ride in and look at but that car was unfortunately a total disaster. Cracked engine block where it needed a new engine due to incorrect heat treating when it was originally produced in October 1997 (I wonder if this one had a similar issue early on), various issues with the brakes, air-conditioning, electrics and it leaked oil everywhere for every day we had it. The only thing that didn’t fail on ours was the air suspension amazingly enough. We only had it for 9 months. It got traded to a new Toyota Landcruiser 4.7. 19 years later, still going strong.

The thing with JLR cars that many people aren't ready for is the inside repair costs. You expect things to go wrong, but you don't expect Bentley-level prices to fix them.

"Clearfield, just outside of Pittsburgh"... Yeah... It's only a 3 hour drive if you take the fast route. Did you hit up Denny's Beer Barrel and Pub? Try out one of their stupidly large burgers? If you ever go there, try the normal burgers and hope someone else will try the challenge burger... Their normal ones are fantastic.

had a 97 hse for about a year. worst mistake of my life. was always something and God forbid if the battery went dead. then it would turn into a brick. can't even get it into neutral to push it if the battery is dead. don't even ask how i found that one out. i mean i can see owning one if i had enough money to own a football team, but im just a blue collar guy forget about it. ended up buying a ,v8 awd, 98 mountaineer for 1200 bucks. i might have put 600 bucks in it over the last 5 years.
