    ARTHUR - Many historians now believe that the name Arthur derives from Arcturus or (Arturus or Artur meaning Bear-like). The person likely to be Arthur could have been a Romano-British Warrior known as Ambrosius Aurelianus who most likely used the symbol of a 'Bear' on his warriors shields and war-banners. This could be the reason why soldiers from 'Arturs' forces (with the Bear symbols) were recorded fighting battles in different parts of the country simultaneously. Ambrosius Aurelianus is also mentioned as being at the famous battle against the Saxons at Mons Badonicus (Baden Hill) and an 'Arthur' or 'Artur' (Bear-like) character may have also been there - could have been the same person or at least his 'Artur' warriors?
    Not sure whether this may be true or not, but it does sound logical and sensible, especially as names can get lost in translation and over time become blurred.

    • @alexander-mauricemillamlae4567
      @alexander-mauricemillamlae4567 2 роки тому +3

      I'm pretty sure Lucius Artorius Castus, prefect of the VI. Legion, is considered the most likely candidate for the original basis of King Arthur. The only things that don't quite fit the "Artorius" hypothesis is that Arthur's legend takes place in the early dark ages, around a century or two after Lucius was recorded to have been stationed with the Legion in Britain.
      Also one more thing I'd like to mention: keep in mind that humans have always loved stories, wether or not they have a historical basis. Some may or may not even have been turned into entire religions. Our love of sci-fi and fantasy novels provides proof of that. For all we know, some roman author might have written the story of King Arthur (let's call this hypothetical novel ARTORIUS - REX BRITANNIAE (I.e. Arthur - King of Britain)) as a futuristic, then-dystopian (sort of) novel for the upper classes across the empire and even the lower classes around italy/anatolia/Egypt to enjoy.

    • @jeffdingle9677
      @jeffdingle9677 2 роки тому +2

      @@alexander-mauricemillamlae4567 Agreed - he could also be a possible candidate for Arthur, as this Roman Officer 'Lucius Artorius Castus' may have indeed been the inspiration for the original legend of King Arthur, the so called military leader from Britannia, although he lived in the second century A.D. but may have been involved with the Saxon-Shore defence forts that were constructed in the 3rd Century in order to combat the Saxon raiders from Northern Europe . However the Battle of Mons Badonicus (Badon Hill) against the Saxons occurred around 500 AD (5th/6th Century) and 'Lucius Artorius Castus' may have died in Dalmatia (Croatia) centuries before.
      The mystery of Arthur surely remains a strange and enigmatic one, but whether true or false - it's still a great story...and a story it may well be......

    Yeah...regarding the claim that Shakespeare was the pen name of some aristocrat trying to have a secret side hustle, that theory is innately some elitist nonsense. His grammar school education was largely on par with what most people learn in AP high school classes or even when working towards a Bachelor's degree today, and the idea that a working class kid with extensive knowledge of folklore, Classical mythology and languages, and history (as it was taught at the time) couldn't have the imagination to write those plays is so snobby that the adherents better bring their noses down a bit before it rains and they drown. Also, we know Shakespeare collaborated on other plays--such as Two Noble Kinsman, itself inspired by a story from another massively popular English commoner, Geoffrey Chaucer (who had ripped it from a Greek myth)--and there are records of him being paid for his work.

      The closest England got to having a King Arthur was Prince Arthur, heir-apparent of Henry VII and brother of somewhat infamous Henry VIII who married late Prince Arthur's Widow, Catherine of Aragon, after he had died. He and Catherine had both gotten very ill, but while she recovered he passed some months before his 16th bday. Had he survived until 25 England might well have remained a Catholic country.

      @@godfreypigott I mean to be fair, most of English history of the past 2100odd years has been fairly well documented, minus about 200 years during some of the viking golden age (as vikings really liked to plunder monasteries, and at the time monasteries were filled roles of libraries, centers of learning and the likes). There have been several hypotheses where the original legend of King Arthur comes from, but most have been discredited. Lucius Artorius Castus, a roman military officer, a prefect, has been proposed as the basis (which doesn't seem too far fetched as Artorius is relatively close to Artur/Arthur), but there we run into the problem that most stories involving King Arthur supposedly occurred in the early dark ages after the Romans pulled out of Britain, I.e. 4th century ish, while Artorius was stationed there as part of the VI. Legion in the late 2nd/early 3rd century. And while you might write off the time difference as just terrible year-on-year timekeeping by someone down the pipe, the presence of at the very least the VI. Legion that he was attached to would surely have been noted, considering that roman soldiers at the time were fairly easily identifiable (There were several more legions in Britain at the time, most famously the IX., but only the VI. is relevant here rn as the obvious flaw in this theory).

    It's highly possible that Menes was simply the deified variant of Narmer. When we consider that Egyptian culture held the pharaoh as an incarnate deity, it would stand to reason that an individual so important that they united disparate kingdoms under their rule as a cohesive empire would rank a bit above rank and file pharaohs. They would possibly even inspire a post mortem continuation of their imperial cult, which likely would've fallen out of favor as the centuries passed by and the official pantheon evolved. Venerating the first pharaoh would likely also assist in the process of unifying the new state

    I was pleased to see you using an image of the John Henry statue in Talcott, W.V., not far from where I grew up. That statue has its own history - every few years, some locals get a wild hair up their ass and decide to take down the statue of their own volition. The reason why is rarely stated, though it could be rooted in racism. Sometimes W.V. man can be as looney as Florida Man.

    It seems odd that Shakespeare is on this list since, as said, most of the doubters aren't questioning whenever William was a real person... but that it wasn't him doing the writing for certain reasons, like him not being a noble and such.
    One I might have put on the list instead would have been Charlemagne due to all the stuff that was said about him pushes him dangerously close to a sort of mythical being... but again, that he existed isn't the thing, but that he might have the attributes of others moved to him.

    I think this falls under the same category as most of the Bible. Most notably, I question the existence of Moses and the Hebrew slaves thing including the plagues and their exodus into the desert. Many modern Egyptologists agree that Egypt's pyramids weren't built by slaves, but by a skilled and paid labor force of architects, artisans, and construction workers.

    In recent decades, the existence of several historical people, such as the Finnish war hero Simo Häyhä, has been questioned. The photographs and the death certificate of Häyhä from 2002 may be forged, according to some skeptic historians. None of them have ever met Häyhä and Häyhä's war deeds and life story are so exaggerated that young scholars suspect that he was possible myth and legend rather than a real person. However, there are still scholars who have met the living Simo Häyhä and are trying to keep the side of the dead veteran. But then when they are gone too, Häyhä will probably disappear from reality into the world of fiction.

    • @jkausti6737
      @jkausti6737 2 роки тому

      You do know that we actually not only have lots and lots of documentary evidence of the man (from his official service record to first hand accounts to his personal hand written war diary), but also have a filmed interview of Häyhä, right? Sure some conspiracy people might just claim that everything is forged, and the same people probably claim that Finland doesn't actually exist, but the actual existence of the man won't be challenged in any serious way as long as Finnish civilization stands.
