    In my personal point of view, I strongly believe Scrooge's encounter with his former fiancee had the greatest impact on his emotional well being. The sudden change from his previous more reserved actions such as "muttering" and "his lips trembling" contradict with his further actions where he "forcefully pressed down the ghost" in attempt to "hide the light" . His fierce and aggressive actions allows the reader to visualize the great impact it had on him. A memory that Scrooge so deeply wished to be forgotten about was brought up and he did not appreciate it. Furthermore, the conversation between Belle and her husband regarding how "lonely" Scrooge looked, heightened the tension felt by Scrooge. Only at this moment was Scrooge able to realize the consequences of his previous actions and how he had missed out on things that he was supposed to experience. Lastly, I feel as his all the thing he witnessed through the Ghost of Christmas Past were slowly causing all his emotions to bottle up and this was his last straw.

    Personally, I believe that his encounter with Belle had the most impact on Scrooge as when comparing his response to his other visits in which he he is more sentimental in his reactions, when seeing his past love, it is as if he is instantaneously reminded of what he had lost and what he could have had if only he wasn't so blinded by his 'tree' of greed. Furthermore, he is more violent in both his demeanour and his actions, 'show me no more!' and his attempt to 'hide the light' of his past. As a result, this argues that Belle was a life-changing individual in his life because it causes him to reflect his current character, especially his unhealthy traits such as his desire for wealth which is essentially the whole purpose of his journey to being redeemed. It also solidifies the idea that Scrooge is trying to protect himself from 'humankind' as he doesn't appreciate the reminders of these relationships, heavily linking back to the famous quotation describing Scrooge as an 'oyster' as this shell is perhaps a weapon and a shield from society. Scrooge may believe that by ignoring the people around him and not associating or investing his time in relationships he is preventing futute harm and this idea of abandonment which is seen in his past relations. Additionally, his constant dismissal and commands to the ghost to hide this memory also proves how Scrooge unerstands that he is at fault for who he is a person in the present and that he regrets his choices from the past so much, that he has buried them in his mind in hopes that buy concealing them, it will be as if they never existed. So in some ways, it is understandable that he is acting so rashly and abruptly as he must have really loved Belle in this time of his life yet is want for material gain as punctured his heart and therefore, left him incapable to love or form relationships in the fear that he will make another mistake. :)

      What a beautifully expressed - and incredibly insightful - piece of analysis. I particularly like your mention of his heart being punctured at the end; that was wonderfully put 😊

      My friend, this is a heartbreaking comment to read and I hope you are okay! I'm sure that as long as you are a nice and decent person, you'll find your people eventually, whether that's somewhere later in your educational journey (college, sixth form, uni, apprenticeships, etc), in the workplace, or in a hobby group of some kind. Please don't lose faith! 😊

    around 5:40 what does "one dimensional" mean? ive heard it in other acc videos and i think also to describe Bob Cratchit as a dimensional character (take that with a grain of salt - quite a few months ago before mocks) but i dont understand what it means

    • @DystopiaJunkie
      @DystopiaJunkie  Рік тому +1

      So one dimensional can mean simple or straightforward. At the start of ACC, Scrooge is just grumpy and we have no explanation for why he is that way: he is grumpy because he is grumpy. When we see that Scrooge has had a sad childhood, we are given a possible explanation for his adult behaviour (Scrooge is a miserable adult because he had a miserable childhood). In providing this possible explanation, his adulthood grumpiness is more rounded out and developed, and he is made to look like a complex human being, rather than an undeveloped character. Hope that helps? One dimensional = underdevelopment and no explanation for how a character is, whereas multidimensional = more rounded out like a real person.
