  • Welcome to the twentieth video in my "'A Christmas Carol' GCSE English Literature Revision" series! In this video, I focus on the theme of family and how Dickens uses it in his story.
    In order to focus on the theme of family in Dickens's classic Christmas tale, I first provide some super essential information about the importance of family in the Victorian era, look at and analyse LOADS of quotations, and then also provide a summary, bonus question, additional ideas, and links to further videos to watch and websites to read in my bibliography! You'll definitely want a pen and paper for this video, as there's loads of useful ideas that will help you with your revision.

    Do you reckon you could talk about the father, son and Holy Spirit as part of the family theme? Each of the ghosts represents one, and they each come together to right the wrongs of societal injustice (personified by scrooge)- it kind of shows how family is always stronger than materialism?

    • @DystopiaJunkie
      @DystopiaJunkie  2 роки тому +2

      Woah 🤯 That's an insane, outside-of-the-box interpretation of the theme, and I love it! I would just add in a caveat in your writing would say that that is a metaphorical or symbolic family, if that makes sense?

    I do AQA English lit, would it be possible if i could share my exam ''essay'' with you and get some feedback and tips on how to get a grade 9 in lit in general because i used to be really good at this, the COVID hit and suddenly i ''lost'' my skills ::(

    • @DystopiaJunkie
      @DystopiaJunkie  3 роки тому +5

      Hi Lilian - sorry for the slow reply, it's been a busy week! I'm afraid I won't be able to look over an essay for you (if I do it for you, there's potentially 4000+ other pieces of work I'd have to look at, which just isn't possible 😂), but what I will suggest is:
      1 - If you really have lost your skills (temporarily!), have a look at older work you've done vs more recent work. What are you doing differently? Is it in structure, expression, clarity of ideas? Some self reflection might be really beneficial 😊
      2 - Do you use analytical and evaluative verbs in your writing? Consciously thinking about verb use in your writing is something that can help reach grade 9! I've got a video on verb choice if that helps 😊
      3 - Believe! The beauty of English is that there are very few wrong answers. As long as you back your ideas up with evidence and explain your ideas, it's difficult for people to tell you you're wrong!

    Yeah, I am still on this lol. But I got a question, at around 17:00 you said that the upper classes and lower classes shared a similarity of loving and close families. However, in the context, you said that middle and upper-class parents tend to distance themselves from family because of business and money?

    • @DystopiaJunkie
      @DystopiaJunkie  3 роки тому +4

      Hello! Apologies for the confusion. It is true that family was valued strongly across all social classes in Victorian England (so what I said at around 17 mins), so there's the common thread they share. However, their reasons for placing value in families would differ. For the lower class, there's strength in numbers: a larger family means more emotional support and more potential earning power. For wealthier families, a close family is important because it would mean an easier home life (e.g. less drama and arguments at home = more peaceful household = a greater respite from the working world), and could also mean stronger business ties in the future (e.g. a good relationship with one's son might mean a strong business partner later in life; a good relationship with one's daughter might mean a stronger business connection with whichever family she is married into). Furthermore, whereas wealthy parents might be a bit more distant from their children (with regards to the amount of time they spend with them and how involved they are in raising them (fathers busy with their businesses, for instance)) they still saw it as important that when they DID spend time with each other, their children were well-behaved, respectful, etc.
      Does that clear it up? Family was important to everyone (especially because of Queen Victoria's influence), but their reasons for this differed. Strong familial relationships were important, but poorer families had to demonstrate them far more frequently (especially when we consider that smaller houses + not affording nannies = spending a lot of time with each other!) than the richer families did.

    • @DystopiaJunkie
      @DystopiaJunkie  3 роки тому +2

      So long story short, the middle and upper class readership might see close poor families and think 'oh they're like us', whilst overlooking that close poor families were caused by necessity, whereas close wealthy families were more of an added bonus.

    • @hamzhehe5062
      @hamzhehe5062 3 роки тому +2

      @@DystopiaJunkie Yes that clears it up. Wealthy families were close just as poor families. However poor families spent more time together and were larger whilst wealthier families were more smaller and spent less time together due to business affairs the parents have. Thanks for replying quickly. Also, I hope you don’t stop making these videos because despite the fact you’re not getting many views there’s immense value for us as viewers as not only are we getting top of the mark analysis and context in a high quality presentation. We also get the added benefit of less people knowing these ideas and analysis. So please carry on, it’s worth it in the long run 🙏
