    Brocchinia reducta is a carnivorous bromeliad native to the Guyana Highlands of South America. There was some debate as to whether B. reducta should be considered carnivorous until 2005 when the plant was found to produce an enzyme aiding in the digestion of prey. B. reducta lures prey with its sweet smell. Once prey has found its way onto the plant, the waxy coating on the leaves crumbles sending the bugs tumbling into the pool of water or “tank” at the center of the plant. Here, digestion begins via enzyme and bacterial breakdown while small hairs called trichomes at the bottom of the tank absorb the available nutrients. From Curious Plant

    nice video.I have a B.reducta, too. I grow it like my sundews, very wet, very sunny. In summer it grew very good and now it is quite large (repot it if necessary). You should also wet the plants from top sometimes because they catch the flies there and absorb some nutrients ;)

      I have a couple of thoughts on this. First thought is that I feel very good about promoting California Carnivores. I have no problem speaking about them and referring people to their business. They are an incredible group of people running a truly amazing nursery. They have a goal and mission that is incredibly similar to mine, which is to grow the carnivorous plant hobby and create awareness about these incredible plants. If you follow them on social media, you can see all the incredible things they have been doing recently with conservation around carnivorous plants. I honestly just can't think of anything negative about promoting California Carnivores. My other thought is that, yes, I do speak about California Carnivores in this video, but the majority of the video is about the plants, not the nursery. We spend most of the time talking about each individual plant and not where they arrived from. Probably only 2 or 3 minutes of this entire video is actually dedicated to talking about California Carnivores. But, like always, I appreciate your opinion and thank you for the comment!

      I can assure you that I am still passionate about my plants. I have partnered with California Carnivores and I do get a small kick back when people purchase plants from them using my code. The amount of money I get from this channel is negligible and not even close to justifiable given the amount of time I spend on making this channel work. I have a full time job, I'm married and have 3 kids. One kid is a Sr in high school and my other two kids play travel sports. I don't have time to maintain and run a carnivorous plant UA-cam channel. But... I figure it out. I can promise you, the money is not what's keeping me around. Not even close. My passion for this channel and my plants is the only thing keeping me going. If I wasn't passionate about my channel and plants, in no world would it be worth the amount of time it takes away from my day to day life and my family. I run this channel because I love it. I try really hard to produce as much content as I can. One of my biggest goals with my content is to continue to reach a bigger audience and share carnivorous plants with more and more people. Sometimes you have to answer to the algorithm a bit in order to reach those bigger audiences.

    Does it actually take two days?

    • @CarnivorousPlantsHub
      @CarnivorousPlantsHub  Рік тому

      The shipping? If so, I obviously can't guarantee it will always only take two days. That seems to be the typical time it takes for me to get mail from them. Local post offices are all going to be different. I will say though, I had one venus flytrap from a different seller take 11 days to get to me. (USPS fault, not seller) and it was in rough shape but lived! So even if it takes 4 or 5 days, in most cases the plants will be okay as long as care after opening is on point!

      I've had the opportunity to speak and network with the folks over at California Carnivores. When it comes to carnivorous plants our vision is really similar. We really want to bring carnivorous plants to a bigger audience and broaden the hobby. I feel nothing but proud about my partnership with California Carnivores. Reading the book "Savage Garden" was one of my early intros to learning about carnivorous plants. Move forward several years, I still consume their content and learn from them daily. It's not 100% just about the plants, it's also about the people. I want to make sure that any nursery that I partner with share a similar vision as me. I have nothing against Sarracenia Northwest, I've actually learned a lot from them over the years too! If you want to buy plants from them, I 100% encourage that! And that goes for anyone! My true goal here is to expand the carnivorous plant universe and help people grow their plants.

    • @CarnivorousPlantsHub
      @CarnivorousPlantsHub  Рік тому

      I think questioning ones integrity because they partner with a plant nursery feels pretty harsh. The goal of my videos is the same as it always has been, to help people learn and care for their carnivorous plants. I'm not getting rich off this channel, as a matter of fact, this channel consumes more of my time than a second job would. I do this because I love it. I get a small kick back when people purchase plants using my code from California Carnivores. I have a full time job, a wife and 3 kids. My oldest is a Sr in high school getting ready to go to college. I have a Freshman and a 9 year old who both play travel sports. The amount of money I make from this channel doesn't even come close to justifying the amount of time that I spend on it. People really have no idea how time consuming it is to shoot, edit and produce this content. On top of content just maintaining a large carnivorous plant collection becomes it's own part time job. I actually lose sleep at night thinking about my plants. This is a hobby of passion. If I was not passionate about carnivorous plants, I wouldn't be doing this. The time it takes out of my life and away from my family and kids wouldn't be justifiable for the money I make out of it. The only way to justify it in my eyes is that I love my plants and this channel. I apologize that you see my partnership with California Carnivores as some kind of hit to my integrity. I'm proud of my partnership as I have a shared vision as their nursery.
