Great video Gerry I am coming home from Toronto in March and hiking up Benbulbin. It must have been majestic sleeping under the stars without the light pollution. Thanks Joe in Toronto
Cheers Joe👍 That sounds like something really cool to look forward to when you return home from Toronto👍 I love being able to look up at a sky filled with stars - something I think many of us have lost over the years - away from everything. It is just magical, as I hope your trip will be😊
Hi Gerry, thanks for this fantastic video of our beloved Benbulbin. We enjoyed the sounds of nature - no music, no talking - and your skilful view on details! Chris & Niko
Its Friday night and I'm chilling out watching this piece of class, Wish I was there now! You can always tell a video made by you mate, it carries your very own unique DNA just wonderful :) Tim
Good man Gerry this was a breath of fresh air for me here in Florida I will be home hopefully next summer and I need to do a bit of this I can't stay away from the old sod it has too strong a pull on me.thanks for this beautiful piece.really loved it.
gerry mcveigh is that walk you just done in that clip easy to follow.it was absolutely fabulous. I done most of Ireland on motorcycle and 4x4 and even done all it's inland waterways. I've walked along the canals and river barrow and some small walks up the Cooley mts. What you are doing here is the full package and I've always had a longing to do it proper so it's on my list when I get back.i checked out some of your other stuff to. Really enjoying it thanks again.
Derrick, sounds like you have done your fair share of exploring Ireland by different means with more to come :-) No tracks up there but no really difficult ground to cross so is just a matter of doing some planning - there are some really good guidebooks from Collins Press covering pretty much all of Ireland with walks of varying levels.
Some fabulous scenes Gerry as always. I like the way you start off with the small little creatures. Insects are all about us all of the time. What an escarpment. Where is that Gerry at 2.18? Looks like a land slide. Love that burner in the mine....you can imagine brews, warmth and tired and cold men there. Without doubt you had another cracking bivvy amid the awesome Irish landscape. Just the ticket - Wonderful. All the best my friend. Mark.
Cheers Mark, it is a beautiful area and tourists are drawn to the lough and waterfalls at the base of the escarpment leaving the high areas peaceful. The area is limestone so there are a number of fissures of various sizes and streams appear and disappear at will. The old mining works are something different and that old building with the burner has planks laid out and would be an interesting to stay for a night but this time it was better under the stars :-)
Hi Gerry.....I simply don't get the replies notified. It sounds and awesome area with so much going on. Just the kind of place I wouldn't like to leave. Have a great weekend my friend. All the best. Mark.
Cheers👍 I have looked for that track and can't find it. I did start at the carpark and forest track at roughly 757437 to get onto the plateau and then pretty much followed its edge to King's Mountain and Benbulben, with t detour to the old mining operations. The edge of the plateau can be followed on the northern side to Slievemore, (Benwiskin), Truskmore and Tievebaun before returning pretty much due south to the starting point. Hope this helps if you are planning a visit.
Great views, I have been trying to find the access route up to the mine for years. I know the access from near to the waterfall, but is there a closer one , near the water bottling plant., and is access a problem
Gordon, I have used the car park down from the waterfall next to the forest on a couple of occasions, it is a bit of a dander but worth it for the views. Not sure of other options, though possibly going straight up to where the pylons come down but as for access?? Cheers gerry.
Gerry, I've been admiring your videos for a the last couple of years, really impressed with the quality of the footage, obviously the spectacular view of Donegal help, however I was wondering what type of camera / video recorder you are using? Thanks in advance, and keep the video footage coming. Great job, Aidan
Cheers Aiden, the spectacular views of Donegal makes it pretty easy to capture most of the time. I have been using a Canon DSLR for a couple of years which is great for close up and zoom shots and captures 1080 video well. Cheers gerry :-)
Beautiful video! Looks like an awesome part of the country - I'm down the southern half myself, never been up that way but must do someday! Looks like ideal bivvy territory :P What was the video filmed on can I ask? :)
Cheers Paul, it is an awesome part of the country with plenty of scope for wild camping. I use a Canon 650D DSLR for the most part but am also trying to get used to the gopro, though not in love with it yet ;-)
Cheers, i have an old army bivy bag that i was given free and it does a great job in good weather - it can handle the odd shower. a heavy dew and a covering of frost. I would usually take the tent if there was going to be any significant rain in the forecast :-)
Do you maybe have a GPS track of this walk? Or even the positions of the old mine would help. And another question. How is the stream water in Ireland in general? Is filtering and/or boiling enough?
I have looked for a gps track of this walk but can't find one. If you check out kernowclimbers comment at mountainviews.ie/summit/282/ it gives a grid reference for the mine workings of 7312 4530. The old mine buildings are clearly shown on the 1:50000 Ordance Survey map at this location and her grid reference is for the main workings with the old miners hostel shown on the map to the south. She used the old mining road from Gleniff and had permission to do so (as i know there have been historic issues with access in this area). I approached from the Glencar side using the forestry track at 757 436 to access the hillside. High on the mountain usually pretty good. I have drank straight from the stream on a number of occasions, though usually i would use a water bottle with a filter or boil water for tea and cooking. This area is limestone and water can be difficult to find at height. Hope this helps :-)
Thank you. You should get some kind of touristic award! I am planning my trip to Ireland (this march) almost solely on your videos and GPS tracks on ViewRanger.

Fantastic Gerry. I did part of this route myself after reading your description of it on MV - brilliant area.
Cheers Adrian, it is a brilliant area and it was cool to go back again and capture some of it on film :-)

Hi would you be able to share an itinerary for this hike please? I am looking to do a wild camping of Benbulbin and I am open in the route and time.

What is the WiFi like up there? 4g any good ?
From memory I think it was fine :-)
