The problem for me in this excerpt was no credit at all was given to her jumps! Just politics was a reason for her success- no talent was involved!! Like she didn't do anything and not just was beneath their definition of beautiful skater! Her jumps were amazing and she could have good vehicles for her talent!!
I think Frank is just stating his opinion. Clearly, he comes from a school of thought that values line and polish. To him, Irina was never a beautiful/polished skater, so the idea that her presentation was ever comparable to (or better than) Michelle's in the judges' eyes was mindboggling to him. The better skater was clear. Some will agree with that sentiment, some won't, but I think Frank's opinion is a valid one, and certainly one shared by many skating fans (myself, Jenny and Dave) included.
Again, they agreed that Irina was not a beautiful skater. That is not necessarily reflective of her technical skills. Kinda like how there are two marks even today for those two components, no?
But what about the only reason she had success was politics and not her jumps?!? Can't give her any credit for her jumps? Poor Kwan held back by judges because of Russian politics!
Sorry, but not really. I know many people who just didn't like Irina's skating, US or not. Just as many hated Michelle. It happens because they're popular. It's just their opinion and they're allowed.
Yes, we need the part 2.
June 9, 2024. R.I.P. Frank Carroll.
Thank you, I always wondered how Oriana git away with her mediocre programs
The hating on Russia and Russians is just going to be overwhelming. Sure the us had no politics right!?? Slutskaya was enormously talented!!!
