To think how far this project has come and the amount of people worldwide who have the production basses. What an achievement!! Incredible stuff Scott!!
Look how far this beautiful bass has come since I drew it up in Illustrator all those months ago and plotted it out for you. Stunning craftsmanship and phenomenal all round nice guy! :)
The tone sweep and series/parallel switching make this thing exceptional. I played an EB3 for years and the other guys in the band hated it. Too muddy. This thing cuts right thru. Excellent design, pretty too!
Came to this video while on the hunt for short-scale bass info generally. Wow! Not only is that bass gorgeous to look at listen to, but you are doing a great demo there. Any cheeky Stanley Clarke riffs will always keep my attention. A luthier who can play like that? You are a gifted man indeed. Props.
Absolutely gorgeous.Sounds fantastic. If I were still gigging heavy and not the owner of 21 basses I'd be all over that beauty. As usual the playing is impeccable.
Another great clip. What I like is that there is little or no, look at me, no stupid long bass free styling or showing off as i call it. Started playing bass last year, had one full scale then went straight to S Scale, love them.
Lovely instrument, great sounds and a super-useful short scale. If I was still playing, this is THE bass I'd want, no question! I really hope you get these into mainstream production with someone who can give them the same quality look and performance! All the best!
+Mark Chippendale Hey Mark - thanks for the positive comments! Thankfully things have moved on and it's now in full production manufactured by Chowny Bass. Also there's a new Pro version on the way with a walnut top and similar hardware spec to this hand built one (sans the trem ).
I have 3 SWB standards, two from the early days and one from 2019 which is switchable active/passive. They're all really nice. Production shut down during covid, but now they're being made again in the UK. There are design mods, look forward to seeing what these are when the new basses hit the shops!
I just bought a mint swb-1 with the case £275 and i love it! i suffer from peripheral vision loss due to a stroke and i can't see the bottom end. this bass does the job thanks scott
Looks devilishly fun to play, beautiful design, love that first blend of P bass/Jazz tone.. I'm hearing Stingray, Thumb, Ricky, Alembic, Jazz and P out of that killer bass! How 'bout some picking tones?
Love the angled pickup to brighten the bass EA strings and warm up the gb strings. It is a beaduty. The tone is great to match your playing. The team sounds perfect.
Scott, every day you inspire me to keep trying. Man, I’d love to chat with you on Facebook Messenger. I’m looking to get a 30” scale bass and turn it into a piccolo bass.
Great work on designing this bass, Scott! I'm addicted to 32" basses now (I think yours is 30"?). As a designer the only thing that seems aesthetically out of place is the bridge. I know this is a bass trem bridge. . . but a nice clean high-mass bridge like a Hip Shot A Style Bass Bridge would not only sound great. . . it would be visually appealing as well. Thanks for the video! Ted
+Ted Townsend Cheers Ted for the comments! The new 'Standard' version does indeed have a straight ahead high-mass bridge.... ua-cam.com/video/icQIWwGdTEk/v-deo.html
Hi Scott, that's a beautiful sounding and looking bass. I bet if i gave you a stick and some fishing line you would make it sing. your an amazing bass player and a really down to earth guy. Thank you so much for taking the time to put up your fantastic vid's.
Hi Scott, I love your bass you really did a good job. I hope to be able to offer me one soon. I also love your opening and ending song. I’m learning to play bass, do you have this music that you play in score tablature, or do you plan to make it a tutorial like the one of Stomp soon? I really wish I could play it. Thanks again for everything you do, I follow you from France. I hope very soon.
Hi there! I was delighted with the bass....a real thing of beauty. Unfortunately there is no tab for this particular video,, sorry. I'm so very pleased you're enjoying my videos....if you become a member of my channel too, you will also get exclusive access to 'Member Only' perks, and it also helps to support my work here! 😀 Cheers, Scott.
all my long scale Basses are unused now ..I have two shortscale cheapie from squier and haven't used my fenders since... this is a move up... tasty... strange how after 40 years I discovered short scale and haven't looked back since...
Hi there! I designed the bass myself but it was hand built by local luthier, Brian Eastwood. It cost me around £2.5K in total but it's a STUNNING bass. Here's the link to Brian's FB page....facebook.com/brianeastwoodguitars. Cheers, Scott
Hey Scott, that's a really nice bass. Looks expensive. I was corrupted when I started playing into thinking short scale basses were for beginners and nothing but the best Fenders or Spectors would do. Why do you like short scales so much? I've always thought that common basses were all needlessly the same size which is a little too big. I really noticed this when I saw Scott Devine's Overwater jazz bass was about 3/4 size. I thought that was a great idea. The Gibson Eb's were always a little dull sounding. going to look into one of your short scales.
what gauge string do you use? I just got a squire jaguar ss that came with 40-95 strings and i'm wondering if I should go heavier. I'm used to 45-105 on my jazz bass. some people say going heavier on a short scale will sound to muddy. Would love to hear your thoughts.
drwinkle101 I like 'em! I've got a really nice/accurate copy made by Revelation at the mo' which is beautiful. I also used one of the Gibson SG basses with the Animals for a while last year - very nice bass too. For some of the stuff I do they don't have enough in the way of highs. I do love them for what they do though. I'd love to try one of the 70's Eb-3 with the neck pickup in a more P-bass position. But then I guess you'd lose that classic EB-0/3 tone....
Hi there - thanks for your comment!! :-) I've just put a link to Brian Eastwood's Facebook page in the video description. If you hop over there you can send him a message for a quote :-)
Really nice bass and playing. Must be cool to have your dream bass build. One question: did you have to put the pickups into this angled position because of the tighter string spacing??
benchinho I paly short scale basses, and they tend to be nice and thick on the lower notes and thin on higher notes, and the G string can sound shrill. The angled p/ups here compensate for that tendency.
Wonderful. I'm considering an Ibanez Mikro (4 or 5 string) which has 22 frets and Fender Squier Jaguar 20 frets, both short scale, I've been playing for a year. Would you advise on how much we need those last few frets? I haven't really need them so far. But I'm starting out.
I'm an older player with arthritic hands. I've been performing for several years with a Mikro and I love it. My band is very happy with the sound. I play it through a 100 watt Fender Rumble and a Boss GT-B1 Multi effects pedal.
Love the bass. I'm curious about the angle. It would seem if you tilted treble side closer to bridge you'd get a nice emphasis on high end. Granted your way is bassier and may be best choice but I'm curious as to your thoughts on this! Love your playing!
+archivestereo DO you mean the angled pickups? If so my theory is that on most basses the G string is always a little thin sounding compared to the E string. In angling th pickups the way I have, the low notes remain mice and focused whilst the high strings gain a little depth.

I saw the photos of this bass on Brian Eastwood's FB page and noticed that there are 3 battery bays on the back. Is it vital for there to be 3 batteries for this setup as it would seem a single battery is sufficient. Thanks!

you could build one. I built an acoustic one out of those toy guitars you find at Walmart XD I just added bass strings and widened the bridge holes to accommodate bass strings XD (me and my cheap ways)
Sterling by Music Man Sting Ray Short Scale Bass is the cheaper version of the American made Ernie Ball. 30" scale one passive pickup with a selector switch for two double and one single wiring of the pickups on both basses. . . . . Great !!
Hi Scott, I got real excited when I found your video here in my search for a good short scale four string bass. I, like you, have been searching for an affordable Alembic type quality short scale. But, I got disappointed when you showed the back and it was a bolt on. Why not a neck thru since you had a guy building it for you? Would you and your builder consider a neck thru to sell? Can you get back to me on this neck thru topic? Thanks, Gary
Hi Gary! I prefer bolt-on neck construction as I find it punchier in the low-end. I've found most neck-through basses I've owned to be a bit thin sounding. Brian could certainly build a neck though design for you. I've just put a link to his facebook page so you could send him a message if you like :-) Hope that helps Gary. Cheers, Scott.
Scott Whitley Thanx Scott for the quick reply. I think you might be right now that I think back on the times I have played and owned both styles. I get hung on always hearing the neck thru has a lot more sustain. What do you think? Or, is it more about having a high mass bridge and maybe even a brass nut, too? I used always get brass nuts installed at with my local music store repair guy. It did make a brighter sound.Mostly Precision basses. This was back in the 70's.
Yeah - the neck through theory is it's all one piece of wood vibrating with nothing to brake it up. The brass nut thing works to a degree but only in open positions. As soon as you fret a note the nut has no effect. A good solid bridge DOES make a difference though. To my ears it tightens the sound and can help with sustain too. It's a funny thing the whole bass-sustain discussion to me really though. What I mean is, how many songs do us bass players play where we need notes to sustain for a long time lol? Seriously though, the SWB-1 has plenty of sustain with the bolt on neck :-)
Scott Whitley Sorry for all the separate replies, :-) Do you know the width at the nut? Is it 1 and 1/.2" (I hope) ? I like Ibanez basses for their slim and thin on their necks. Is the neck you have here using a C shape or a more flatter shape? Thanx for your time helping me here. Gary
I LOVE basses ,so I usually think every bass I see as awesome even the cheap ones,I'm not a huge fan of short scale,as I get older and my playing gets more into the playing aspects by the books so to speak, less towards the jamming out Like a rockstar with the latest gear, I'm warming up to short scale, that said this bass is sic,,as my teenage daughter and her friends say this bass is "Lit", which means extremely awesome in teenager...how do I get one
Hi Aaron and thanks for your comment!! Love that it's 'lit' lol! :-) They are available worldwide through Chowny Bass. Here's the link to the website, Aaron - chownybass.com/product/swb-1-scott-whitley-signature/
Scott Whitley It really is a beauty, Brian set up my Wal back in the 70s, he's a true craftsman. I've got a 105 flatwound E on my short scale Bronco, but it just doesn't feel (or sound) tight enough for me. BTW - I'm still playing the Farida JB-6 you recommended :)
No doubt one of the best sounding short scale Basses I’ve ever heard. It’s beautiful too, hope you enjoy it!
Thank you!

Beautiful bass, Scott - congratulations! And beautiful playing.

Great sound...love it.

I would love to have a bass like that...
Nice looking and sounding bass
I missed the part on why the pickups are on an angle ?? Why?
Daniel Irvine if you play on the higher frets it gives you more clarity i think

No - roundwound. :-)
excellent !! sounds really fucking good!!

That's what I'm talking about. The only improvements I can think of are NT & larger HBers.

what's the price of this bass ?? .. any real link ?? .. thanx ..

damn wish that finish you have there was available, that's beautiful
Well you can have the exact same bass for 2k+ and a few months of wait. Clearly over my price range.
🙂
How much for your signature bro?
Hey Scott, that's a really nice bass. Looks expensive. I was corrupted when I started playing into thinking short scale basses were for beginners and nothing but the best Fenders or Spectors would do. Why do you like short scales so much? what gauge string do you use? I just got a squire jaguar ss that came with 40-95 strings and i'm wondering if I should go heavier. I'm used to 45-105 on my jazz bass. some people say going heavier on a short scale will sound to muddy. Would love to hear your thoughts.
45-105 will work just fine on a short, Jake. :)
Thanks!
What do you think of the classic Gibson Eb-3 Scott? Some call it the best short scale ever. Just interested in your take on it....
drwinkle101 I like 'em! I've got a really nice/accurate copy made by Revelation at the mo' which is beautiful. I also used one of the Gibson SG basses with the Animals for a while last year - very nice bass too.

Hi there - thanks for your comment!! :-)
I've just put a link to Brian Eastwood's Facebook page in the video description.

The angled p/ups here compensate for that tendency.
benchinho Thanks!!! In answer to your question - exactly what drwinkle101 said... :-)
How much do these Basses weigh on average?
what amplifier do you use?
Cool tone, cool playing ;)
Thanks JackalRoses!
Does the standard version has same kind of Alembic vibe?
Hey Scott... A little off topic here. Just curious.. What drum machine are you using??
Hi Jerson - It's the drum machine built into my Korg Pandora PX4D.
Wonderful. I'm considering an Ibanez Mikro (4 or 5 string) which has 22 frets and Fender Squier Jaguar 20 frets, both short scale, I've been playing for a year. Would you advise on how much we need those last few frets? I haven't really need them so far. But I'm starting out.
JD Arctic take a look at the Ibanez SRMD mezzo. It’s a medium 32” scale version of an SR300...
I'm an older player with arthritic hands. I've been performing for several years with a Mikro and I love it. My band is very happy with the sound. I play it through a 100 watt Fender Rumble and a Boss GT-B1 Multi effects pedal.
Is this actually available to purchase anywhere?
It is yes - either send Brian a message via his Facebook page here - facebook.com/brianeastwoodguitars or call him on 01706 874549
I've been thinking in getting a short scale bass because recently I've been wanting lower tension on the strings.
Hi Tony, did you get one? Cheers, Scott.
@@ScottWhitley Hey Scott! No I haven't, lost my job because of COVID so it's been put on hold. Still on the list though.
@@tonybp so sorry to hear that Tony.....the last couple of years has been extremely difficult for so many people, hasn't it? Take care! Cheers, Scott.

Hi Scott, I'm a New Zealand based guitar designer and am building a 30 inch scale bass hoping to replicate your exact electronics. I saw the photos of this bass on Brian Eastwood's FB page and noticed that there are 3 battery bays on the back. Is it vital for there to be 3 batteries for this setup as it would seem a single battery is sufficient. Thanks!
Hi David. One 9v will do the trick, but for the EMGs two is better imho (18v). It allows more headroom, but also gives a thicker tone to my ears. The third battery is for powering fingerboard LED markers, which I have still yet to have installed lol.
hope that helps, David,
Scott.
Thanks Scott, appreciate your reply. It was that mysterious 3rd battery bay that was throwing me, wondering if I should go 18v now. Cheers!
what you trhink about warwick rockbass corvette basic (shortscale)?
Pretty cool - probably one of the best 'off the peg' shorties!
The top strings sound so rich and twangy but the low strings have no body. What guage strings were on this? Sounds like you need a heavier E.
👍
Hi Scott what is the name of the bridge?
Hi - it's a Kahler 7410 Bass Tremolo bridge.
I want one !!!!
you could build one. I built an acoustic one out of those toy guitars you find at Walmart XD I just added bass strings and widened the bridge holes to accommodate bass strings XD (me and my cheap ways)
wow man. nice bass
Thanks!
Sterling by Music Man Sting Ray Short Scale Bass is the cheaper version of the American made Ernie Ball. 30" scale one passive pickup with a selector switch for two double and one single wiring of the pickups on both basses. . . . . Great !!
Cool!
can you buy it in US?
Great playing and lovely drop dead gorgeous looking and sounding bass, love it.
9thaspect9 Thank you!! :-)
now thats nice!
Daniel DeMayo Thanks Daniel!
Do you use rotosound funkmaster strings here?
I like to use Rotosound Funkmaster strings on long scale basses but I use 35-100s on short scale basses. Cheers, Scott.
very nice bass, what's the string spacing on it,thank you
Hi Cem! String spacing is adjustable but I have it set at around 17mm.
How do you keep the gold hardware from fading??
It does fade a little (which I don't mind). :-)
how much for that bass
I've just put a link to his facebook page so you could send him a message if you like :-)
Hope that helps Gary.
Cheers,
Scott.
Scott Whitley
I forgot to ask, why did you have the two pickups slanted back towards the bridge on the low string side?
Yeah - the neck through theory is it's all one piece of wood vibrating with nothing to brake it up. The brass nut thing works to a degree but only in open positions. As soon as you fret a note the nut has no effect. A good solid bridge DOES make a difference though. To my ears it tightens the sound and can help with sustain too.
It's a funny thing the whole bass-sustain discussion to me really though. What I mean is, how many songs do us bass players play where we need notes to sustain for a long time lol?
Seriously though, the SWB-1 has plenty of sustain with the bolt on neck :-)
Scott Whitley
Sorry for all the separate replies, :-) Do you know the width at the nut? Is it 1 and 1/.2" (I hope) ? I like Ibanez basses for their slim and thin on their necks. Is the neck you have here using a C shape or a more flatter shape? Thanx for your time helping me here.
Gary
What about the strings tension ? Is it similar to a 34" ?
Hi Pascal! Yes - string tension is comparable to long scale. The trick is to use a slightly heavier gauge on short scale than you would on long.
Cool !

Also the 'pro' version is available here - chownybass.com/product/swb-pro/
Beautiful looking and sounding bass. I can't get on with short scale because the E string always feels too floppy.
Cheers!
It really doesn't feel floppy on this one. I'm using a hybrid string set gauges 40-100 which is slightly heavier towards the E string.
I use TI jazz flats, the least amount of tension bass strings made and on a short scale Hofner and it sure doesn't feel floppy too me. :-)
