A year of PT with little improvement and no one was checking to make sure I wasn't engaging the SCMs during my exercises. This is the first time I've felt the deep flexors turn on. Thanks.

This is an excellent tip for those of us who have issues with our head held too far forward for extended periods of time.

I get a lot of tightness in my throat and either side of neck (like spasms) even in my mouth and down sides of throat and neck. Would this help? I also get nausea and dizziness from back of neck...

Love the video! Any advice on how to implement this into a more functional task?

You could do these when driving, sitting at a computer and even watching a movie. Very healthy exercise to do.

Quick question. Do I just do the chin tuck when lying or I should lift my head during the chin tuck too?

    Hi Paul!
I really need to do this exercise as I have forward head posture, but when I do, it aggravates a nerve root that sends a sharp pain above my scapula and on the forearm flexors. Like it’s catching on the foremen as I’m straightening my neck, and tuck my chin. I have chronic C6 C7 cervical radiculopathy for about 19 months. Herniated discs and osteophytes. Is it still safe to try and do it? Thanks!

First, try decreasing the amount you move your neck, just a little movement is enough to activate the deep neck flexors. If that is still aggravating, try this. Sit with good posture. Look to your right with your eyes and think about turning your head, but DONT TURN YOUR HEAD. Hold this for 3-5 seconds. Repeat same thing to the left. This will activate the same muscles

Hey! Thanks for this video. I noticed it's very hard for me to activate it without activating the SCM. Only way I could do it was by lifting my body (so the head is a bit more tilted down) and also by raising the larynx and hyoid bone (by pressing the tongue against the roof of the mouth). Wondering if this sounds understandable and if it's a valid approach. How often would you recommend for anyone to practice this exercise in order to get it strenghtened? 4 times a day? The more the better? Thank you!!

All sounds good and 4 times a day is adequate

I had this problem but currently have been doing exactly what he says for a while now and my neck feels better. Because of my posture of the shoulders rolling in could it be possible I tore my infraspinatus and supraspinatus overtime? The reason I ask is because I'm having surgery on the right shoulder and the left shoulder hurts just as much and I'm assuming it's the same problem. When you have both shoulders going bad like this could it be years of poor posture?

Poor posture can contribute to it but probably not cause it to tear completely

@@OrthoEvalPal can degenerative joint disease and degenerative disc disease cause this to happen? Just trying to figure out how this happened. I did not have an accident so I'm really stumped as to why both shoulders are bad. My fear is that they'll go into repair the tear and find out that my whole tissue is worn due to degenerative issues that cannot be repaired. I did fall forward and caught myself with my hands this summer but I did not hurt myself. My shoulders have been like this for a couple of years now and I have lost all the muscles underneath my arms. Advice to what may have caused this is much appreciated
