Man I just want to thank you for staying serious with this and respecting the music. Most 'reaction' channels end up over acting and making goofy ass faces and talking over most of the songs. I can tell you are actually absorbing the songs. Much love my man.
I really appreciate Plini and his songwriting ability in the instrumental prog scene. Not that it’s not great, but I tend to get tired of the shredding over the djenty rhythms. Plini writes interesting rhythms, riffs, licks with such great feeling.
Really love your interpretation of this song following a sunrise and sunset, I think this song does a great job painting vibrant colours with the music, Plini really is a true artist
Troy Wright is the drummer on this album, and does a fantastic job. I'd be interested to hear your take on his part. It follows the rhythm guitar to a T.. which in most cases wouldn't be too flashy, but Plini's rhythm parts are complex enough to allow for a lot of creativity on Troy's end. This album is one of my all time favorite drum compositions; Troy really locks in with the rest of the band , as you indicated. But he also lets loose and does everything with his own flourish. Great review!
Highly recommend Selenium Forest if you're going to do Plini again. In my opinion, far better than Electric Sunrise (which, by all means, is great), and probably easier to analyze and learn from.
Thanks for reacting to this song! Love watching someone experience Plini for the first time! His music still gives me chills no matter how much I listen to it. Glad you liked it!
The "verses", after the first major music/sun outburst, is to me describing life growing, due to the life giving rays from the sun. It shows what happens down in the brown dirt, tiny plants peeking, reaching upwards.
You definitely made me appreciate taking form & analysis, and music history from college. This brought back so many memories and was a great reaction/analysis of this amazing song bro.
Very cool to see you finally check out Plini, my fav has always been Selenium Forest. I'd also like to throw in the band Artificial Language. Have a more Arch Echo vibe to them, but I think you'd enjoy it.
Hey, love your interpretation of how the song title relates to the textures of the song. Enjoyed the song for a long time but I wasnt able to see it that way and yet how you interpreted it perfectly fits! Thank you!
You most definitely need to check out 'Selenium Forest' next, by far one of Plini's finest songs! Plini, Sithu Aye, Widek, & Gru are my top 4 Solo artists in the current wave of modern-day Prog music (although Gru hasn't released any new music outside of guest solos on all of Widek's albums in years). Chon are also amazing artists & it's been cool seeing their style evolve throughout the years. Looking forward to seeing what your thoughts are on them.
@@Isaiah_McIntosh I love Destiny Potato/Sordid Pink & David's Bilo albums. I've seen him live with Yvette Young, Nick Johnston & Plini a couple years back, great show. Also Jakub's 'Wishful Lotus Proof' album is 🔥 Majin is my fave track of his 👌🏾

It's really like one dude with a touring band. He's phenomenal live. His band played as the backing band for like three different artists without stopping it was quite impressive.
Plini is like more of a composer whereas Chon is just an amazingly chill math rock group. His more recent Sunhead EP is really great as well and has more jazz elements in it. The entire album is pretty short and worth a listen. Thanks for listening to all these great bands its really rare someone gives a cool and informed opinion about a lot of these bands. You NEED to check out Jakub Zyteki's most recent album tbh. It's incredible and so tasteful.
The intro of the song is in 13/8, nice reaction btw Plini appears to pay a lot of attention to dynamics on his earlier stuff and layering on his more recent stuff
Hi Brian. Still hoping you can react to “Xanadu” by Rush, the live version off of “Exit... Stage Left”, performed in 1981. The studio version was recorded on their “A Farewell to Kings” album in 1977, but the live version is magnitudes better.
Omar Alvarado I think a classic prog week would be cool! For me, my fiancé introduced me to Pink Floyd and I REALLY started listening to them. Following them, the Beatles, Queen, rush, genesis, yes, then some more prog Metal- dream theater, symphony x, porcupine tree, opeth, riverside, and now some more modern people- has been really cool. It’s fun to hear influences all the way back and how people are using musical ideas from the 60-70’s up to today.
I did that one but it was blocked on UA-cam. You can find it on my Google Drive though drive.google.com/open?id=1LqPyV7tijYyqbnkfMzExYJ43zLS8bML1 And if you want to send me a comment on it you could hit me up on Twitter (@CritReactions) or just comment on any of my videos here.
i’m about to binge watch this guy’s whole channel! i LOVE prog but don’t really understand a lot of theory or like, composition behind music. i don’t even know the proper terms i’m looking for haha. but i’m hoping to understand more about how people count time (like how tf do you figure out 13/8??) or know when a song is in drop e just by listening.
Make sure to have a solid grasp of the basics of theory before getting into more complex stuff like odd time signatures and the like. A good understanding of instrumentation and the role each instrument plays in a piece is also really useful when you really want to understand what is going on. Some songwriting knowledge would also go a long way. Good luck!
@@zauls. I appreciate the reply, thank you!! I used to have a stronger musical foundation, but kind of lost it over the years as I moved away from the arts and got more into science. Do you have any channel recommendations where I can learn the basics? Or websites, podcasts, anything?
Lizzie Turbett I don’t know if you’re still interested in this, and this may not be the answer you’re looking for but my advise would be to just find more artists that make you want to listen to their music, not just hear it. The band that did that for me was TesseracT, and since I discovered them several years ago my fundamental understanding of music has been broadened tremendously. I don’t know many channels that purely delve into theory that wouldn’t personally bore me to tears, but because I’ve listened to a broader range of music very intently I can usually figure out what any song is doing and why it works. Hope that helps? 😅
13/8 , when I learned it with some college buddies and I found it was more fitting to think of it as 12/8 (or triplet feel 4/4) with an extra 8th note.
My favorite song from them your lucky i bet you feel like where have i been all this time with beautiful music like this not in my ear lol consider yourself lucky most people dont branch out with listening to different types of beautiful music cheers mate i like what you are doing here.
You should absolutely check out David Maxim Micic. I would imagine as a composer some of his stuff would really appeal to you - a lot of his music is very theatrical and grandiose, and his layering/subtleties have always been a personal favorite. It’s hard to pick only one song of his to recommend but I would say “Where Is Now?” encompasses what I just described best.
Man. I’m glad you enjoyed it. Try some Dirty Loops if you want. They’re killer musicians. I mean really really good. Dirty Loops - Next To You or Rock You. Very high musicianship.
Very interesting, thank you. I think, it could be interesting for you to watch "Auktyon, Medeski, Ribot - "Devushki Poyut". Live in St.Petersburg" video. It's not metal and is more experimental and jazz-rocky than progressive, but it's really interesting. And such names as Medeski, Ribot and Volkov make it even more interesting. And it's a very rare recommendation :)
If u read this, pls do Fit for an autopsy: fear tommorow or napalm dreams, both are amazing songs, they are a deathcore band with great songs and lyrics.
I agree on selenium. I think people just feel it's too minimalist and when Brian does videos there's an emphasis on getting him to do the most technical tracks
Check out Sithu Aye (pronounced "C2-A"). I'd suggest the entire Set Course For Andromeda double lp but for time sake i'll stick to recommending the titular song. A lot of musical storytelling involved.
I believe drums on that record were programmed, so at least technique-wise there's nothing too impressive there, very standard stuff. But it serves the song well
I checked out Language I, which was apparently a mistake that I didn't listen to the second half. I really should remedy that one of these days. ua-cam.com/video/5kTdhK8AV4g/v-deo.html
From my counting the intro is in 13/8 (at least initially) with a 3/3/3/3/1 split inside that measure
Yeah I've got the tabs from sheet happens and it's 13/8 at the beginning and end.
123 123 123 1234 :)
I think I read somewhere that it's split as 123 123 123 12 12
Yep
Rick Beato actually talks about this song in one of his videos

This album and The Shape of Color were the soundtrack to my life for a solid year lol.
Hardest of sames.
Same.. just nonstop on for my senior year of college
Glad to see such a large amount of requests for Plini, he seems to be getting bigger which I can't be any more happy for him, fantastic musician
If isn't Chon should be Cascade or Selenium Forest by Plini, lovely!
I really appreciate Plini and his songwriting ability in the instrumental prog scene. Not that it’s not great, but I tend to get tired of the shredding over the djenty rhythms.
Plini writes interesting rhythms, riffs, licks with such great feeling.
I agree. Of all the popular artists in this genre, Plini has the most memorable melodies and riffs imo.

Selenium Forest is probably my favorite work from Plini to date! Just wonderful music
Selenium forest is fucking awesome, but I think Salt + Charcoal captures Plini's energy better
Thanks for reacting to this song! Love watching someone experience Plini for the first time! His music still gives me chills no matter how much I listen to it. Glad you liked it!
I love the observations about literally following the sunrise/sunset as an interpretive model for the piece. Adds another layer for me.
The "verses", after the first major music/sun outburst, is to me describing life growing, due to the life giving rays from the sun. It shows what happens down in the brown dirt, tiny plants peeking, reaching upwards.
The song is in 13/8 time signature. It took me also sometime to understand the count of the beat.
Plini will have to be on the docket when there's another revisiting bands week.
We should do a Plini week!
