Taking My Wife Sailing For The first Time.. But First, Lets Fix The Boat Ready For Adventures

  • Twahn (My wife) is pretty keen on the sail boat so we found some time to get out on the water and raise the mainsail for the first time. Has been a busy week, working hard to get the sail boat up to spec and ready for some ocean adventures. New oversized anchor, fixed solar and a little fridge were ticked off the list. Just need the tender and we're ready... until the next thing breaks... Cough, Topping Lift & Outhaul😅

Pro tip: If drilling into the boat, you should be drilling a larger hole than needed, fill it with thickened epoxy, then redrilling it to the correct size. This prevents moisture from reaching the core of the boat and rotting the boat from the inside out. You now have holes where water will not only sit from the anchor, but from water rolling over the bow. Not too late to pull it off and make the correction.

Also keep the old anchor, add new rope with eyelet, very handy in bad weather to deploy 2 anchors 45 degrees apart from the bow, or as a stern anchor in various scenarios, in a river channel etc.

The next step on your new anchor setup is a snubber. Basically it takes the load off the roller and onto your large Sampson post just behind your furler. There are phone apps that will also monitor your drift via GPS and sound an alarm if you start dragging anchor while you sleep.

The only issue I can see with the swivel in that spot is if it gets snagged in the hawse pipe or on a deck fitting when you deploy the anchor. You definitely want to mouse the swivel with stainless wire too. This stops it from accidentally coming undone cause you don’t want to lose that sweet anchor. It is a sweet little boat. Can’t wait to see some big adventures in it.

    • @wesleycarlson3749

The biggest loss when losing an anchor is not the anchor itself, but the boat which will probably be sent on a reef while the crew sleeps.

Having bought and repaired an old sailing dinghy this year I thought I could give u a few pointers to help get this beautiful boat sailing smoother. 1) Replace important ropes with new ones. Old ropes tend to get less flexible and smooth with the years and salt water therefore replacing the mainsail halyard, the vang and any other ones u think aren't very smooth with new ones will make it a lot better. New ropes are lower friction and much more reliable so I would recommend them. 2) Old boats need a lot of WD-40, especially in rollers in the mast and boom, it will help a lot with making everything smoother. The last thing you want is a pulley or roller getting stuck in strong winds. Finally as others have said make sure you wire that shackle. Can't wait to see your adventures with the boat.

  • @nigelha3699

i would respectfully suggest you both do an RYA course or two on sailing, day skipper and even coastal qualifications. It would make a world of difference to confidence and most importantly give the wife the knowledge to get you home if something happened to you. This is so important for safety. I'm a power boater [have RYA Coastal Skipper and yacht master coastal classroom ] but as my wife won't really learn how to even drive the boat, it makes it almost impossible for me to leave PPB in Vic, as it would be irresponsible to put her in the position of danger if i got incapacitated.

To make raising and lowering the sails easier, I highly recommend installing some "lazy jacks". This was one of the first things I did on my '72 Cal 27 T2. You can basically just release the main halyard and the sail *almost* folds itself on the boom. I'd do that when soloing or during rough seas, and just neaten up the folds when I was back at dock (or anchor). It's an easy one day project.

Mousing them is using some decent fine stainless twitch wire, through the hole of the shackle pin, around the shackle leg and back through the pin's eye.( can use good cord, but stanless wire. will last longer. . this will stop them working loose.. All your shackles, not just the ones on your anchor rope and anchor. .Cleavis pins also if they feel loose.. .. be safe , be well.. nice little boat you have :)

So good! That anchor is perfect, bigger the better! I highly highly recommend going for an overnighter by yourself first before taking the missus! On a sailboat there are so many noises at night like the halyards rattling against the mast, the helm squeaking etc etc and if you pick a bad anchorage with a cross swell it’s like hell. Got to make sure it’s as idilic as possible when the misso comes along cos you want that pen and boat to last! Unless your misso is a unit and could sleep through an earthquake.

Hi mate, liquid electrical tape is your friend for your wiring connections. I use 3 coatings with heat shrink. The last layer I leave tacky so when I heat the heat shrink the liquid electrical tape squeezes out each end. This will give you an absolute water proof connection. I have used it on my yak sounder installs for years and still good. Also some zip ties on those anchor/chain shackles would be a good investment. Cheers, BobbyB

I so hope you had fun, messing about in boats is all about the fun. The more confident you BOTH become, the more fun it is. Twahn practice bringing her in yourself and take turns doing ALL the different tasks. I sailed mostly solo, but some of the happiest boats I saw were the ones where both people knew how to do all the things and then they decided which ones they actually wanted to do and what worked for them. Knowledge & practice wins over fear & nervousness every time. Not understanding what is happening is a recipe no one wants to eat.
