Thank you. I needed this video. I live in WKY and have been seeing this plant I had no idea what it was. Used an app and it identified it as ginseng. I’m older but have an 11yo grandson with me that I always try to find ways to keep him off computer. He loves out door things so we want to learn all we can.
Could you guess about what the weight of that ginseng you washed off would be at the beggining of the video once it dried? I'm wondering what a pound of dried sang looks like and can't find a photo anywhere, thanks.
Good video Billy. I haven't dug any to sell for years. When I was younger me and my brothers used to dig it. Thinking about diggin' a little this year. Appreciate your time.
Great video Mr.Taylor. I have a question . You said not to wash all the dirt off about 10 times if your gonna sell it wet , but you never said why ? I'm sitting here thinking it's already going to cost against you it being wet and then you got some dirt still left on roots to work against you ? Idk , why leave some dirt ?
Videos 6 years old so not sure if you actively view new comments. Im a ky man with acess to droves of old ginseng that im just realizing is a good commodity during its legal season. Love your info and im fully ready to invest my efforts. But my question is how do i go about finding permitted dealers to sellto?
Hey Ol' Billy. Glad to see ya. Wishing there was good shang to hunt up here in Wisconsin. Unfortunately, greed has caused some to rape the land. Every year, Wisconsin Wild Shang is being depleted. Guys hike in, camp out, use GPS, pick and plunder, load up and get picked up on the side of a road. Really sad.
James Watson i have i left it for three seasons it never changed ,figured lets take a look . over 70 sections on the neck long fat single root i was amazed
My granny taught me how to spot a real old plant that has come up as a small top. You gotta look for those longer, more narrow, darker green leaves. And the stem will be thick as a pencil right at the base, then thin out. It hasn't failed me save for just a couple two or three times. Good luck, and god bless. ~t
Mr Taylor. I have a question. Do you have a minimum for how much you want brought at a time? Also, i have some older roots that have dried out, and dried out dirty... Is there any way to clean a dirty dry root? Or is it not worth bothering with
great information .. was just wondering how much weight is lost by the drying process ... say you start with 4 lbs fresh/wet how much would you expect it to weigh dried?
update ** heard from a different video the average to expect is around 1 pound dried from 3 pounds fresh .. if that is the case someone might be better off just selling it wet, less time invested, less chance of damaged or lost roots. i would just sell it wet and if i wanted some for myself and family then i would dry it.
Jennie on average 3 lbs fresh to one lb dried. It can be less or more in ratio according to the over all size of the roots being dried. For example if you had 2.5 ounces of roots green that all weighed 1 ounce or more per root then you may dry out at 2.5 or 2.7 to one lb dry and so forth, but the general and best over all average is to figure 3 - 1 my best
I like that one billy it answers alot of my own questions that i had for dryin ginseng. My names jr ive been tryin to find ginseng the past couple of years not had any luck yet but I'll keep tryin. Cause when i do now i got a better idea how im gonna dry it. Thanks Billy

glad to see you back on UA-cam Billy.

Also how would a beef jerky dryer work for drying ginsing? You know them round stackable white trays with the built in fan on the bottom
The heat and air flow is to intense and it over drys as well as cost you valuable weight

Hey Billy! Haven’t you ever dug an old root that only grew a two prong plant?
