These are such great songs. They sound a lot like the music of the post-Diana Ross Supremes. Led by the wonderful Jean Terrell, the group sang a lot of songs with this sound in 1970-72.
Very "Supremes"-like sound to it. You can tell there was a large influence from the 1960s MoTown Girls sound. I'm sure to leading edge music afficionados this was "old stuff" but to other people and their kids it was probably comforting. I can't believe this was ALMOST 50 years ago! 1970-1971. This is ironically one of the few decent H-B animated shows of its time. They did a VERY GOOD job of adapting Dan DeCarlo's style to animation. Hanna-Barbara Studios really fell into a creative rut with constant sequels and reimagined version of Scooby Doo and The Flintstones through the 1970s. It was NOT a good time for H-B in retrospect.
Patrice Holloway was really the main lead singer on most of their songs ("Valerie"). Catherine Dougherty ("Josie") and Cheryl Ladd ("Melody") each got some of their own as well.
Every time I hear this, I'm sad, that a terrific talented artist Ms Patrice Holloway's passed away At the same time, I'm ecstatic with the joy- her (beautifully sung!) lead, hearing thisPERFECT piece of early 70s pop, sung by Patrice et al.
It was Patrice Holloway singing lead 9 out of 10 times. Thank God Dan Janssen stuck to his guns after Hanna Barbera tried to make her character white... The soul-tinged bubblegum was crucial for this to work. I always pray music today may swing back to this era when songs had a melody and were memorable.
The Archies came first, then Scooby Doo and then Josie. There was an episode of The New Scoobby Doo Movies where Josie and the Pussycats had a guest appearance.
@crispycritterz Ah, so now you notice. Yeah I've always liked the animations in the intro. The drumming was always my favorite. I wonder if we'll ever see the stock footage they traced over.
This cartoon was made AT THE SAME TIME, BY THE SAME PEOPLE (Hanna-Barbera) AND ARE OWNED BY THE SAME IP OWNERS (Archie Publications) as the original Archie cartoon. Oh, and they used most of the same voice actors, such as Shaggy (the late Casey Kasem).
@crispycritterz Wow you're so old! Are you an admirer of animation or just making a comment on this show? I'm curious to know what you think of today's shows vs what you grew up with.
@PropellerBusted I've been into animations every since I can remember. Today's shows are just mass produced garbage. The only ones that are any good is some of the Nick stuff that's largely done in traditional animation (Especially Avatar and a few more of that generation, Fairly Odd Parents, etc.) is pretty well done. Most of their CG stuff is just horrible. CN is pretty bad with nearly everything made in-house. Adventure Time is funny, and well animated, but it's just a copy of Regular Show.

That's correct. Before she was an Angel, she was a singing Pussycat. I believe Cheryl sung lead on the song, "Inside, Outside, Upside Down".
While only a few seconds of this song appeared on the show, this to me was probably their best song.

But it's Josie shown singing in the rotoscoped playing sequence. Kinda racist since the black girl actually singing is shown only doing tambourine.
Excellent work!!
JOSIE AND THE PUSSYCATS 1970-2020 50TH GOLDEN YEARS OF CARTOON MEMORY

Wait, so Shaggy, Fred, and Veronica all got jobs on this show, too? :D

sweeet.
Yeah I love Josie & the pussycats Melody Valentine & Josie Mccoy & Valerie Brown
They made Josie and the Pussycats movie.
@PropellerBusted Nope. Some of the sequences in the opening as well.
0:28
@crispycritterz That's the ONLY sequence that looks rotoscoped to you?
2:02 to 2:10 that sequence looks rotoscoped.
Fuck it! We don't need a bass player. Let's just go with tambourines instead!
The funny thing is, they do have a nice bass line still :D

I hated the black hair one always trying to sabotage things
