How about semi-fictional racing cars in racing games? Something like Mitsubishi FTO LM Race Car from Gran Turismo series or Seat Leon WTCC Extreme from GTR Evolution.

The engine sounds of the M3 GTR in NFS Most Wanted 05 and Carbon might be legendary but those sounds in GTR2 and Forza Motorsport 4 are definitely much more closer to the real sound of the raw, growling yet raspy European-Amercian sounding prototype V8. :p
Fun fact: the sound used for the car in MW2005 and Carbon is actually from a TVR Cerbera. In MW specifically, the filename of the sound is along the lines of tvr_cerb (can't remember the full specific name of the file).
@@WTFHAX93 you really should stop spreading beta information about the sound file for the gtr from mw 2005. Listen to the on board from the nugerbring and then listen to to gtr from mw again. The does gome from a charger like it would with the tvr. it comes from the racing spur gears. The gear teeth are pretty much slapping each other as they engage.
The original MW and carbon is the most unrealistic sounding. Sounds nothing like the real car and the only one that truly got close is the FH5 version. At least every other game (except the gran tourismo ones) sound like a V8.
Pretty cool how Most Wanted and Carbon are the most memorable sounds for this particular car, yet the sound itself wasn't even intended for the actual car, but rather the TVR Cerbera
GTR2's sound is definitely something here. I don't know how accurate it is. That's not my place to judge. But that raspiness and gear whine, wow. Still, I like GTR Evo's sound more than GTR2 (specially during downshifts). Probably less accurate, but personally it's more addicting.

I love how in FH5 you are Capable of customizing the sounds of each applicable car and engine and you can bring it quite close to the original sound, but in itself, it is the most iconic car in the world of racing.
It's interesting that a lot of games get the sound engine wrong because of the different E46 M3 versions. The "regular" M3 has a straight-six engine (S54B32), but the M3 GTR had a V8 instead (P60B40). To add up to the confusion, the V8 on the race version GTR had flat-plane design but the road version GTR instead had a cross-plane design.

How many years after the 2000 are you born? GT4 had poor engine sounds, period. Today I find people complaining why two Lambo v12s don't sound differently. No, nothing relevant is changed in technology, making car sounds requires renting cars that used to cost a lot also in 2004. Maybe what changed is the quality of UA-cam videos, us modders source from UA-cam for car sounds, but not the pro games developers. If you think mid 2000s were prehistoric, play GTR2, TDU, NFSU2, Forza 1-2 and NFS Prostreet and tell me if they sound bad
Fun fact the gear whine in the Transmission of the M3 GTR the developers of the NFS Most Wanted recorded the transmission gear whine sound of the car inside the car that why you hear the iconic whine because they recorded the sound of car outside on the side exhaust pipe it was plain you couldn't hear the iconic transmission whine outside so they added the inside recording and they turned it 80% volume up
The M3 GTR race car in Gran Turismo 4 is actually ridiculously easy to get. Just buy a used Audi S4 and complete that one European cup that I can’t pronounce. It’s only 3 races and they are very easy. Once you have your GTR Race Car, you can get the road car version by bringing the Race car to the one make M races.

Funny how the devs of most wanted decided to use a TVR cerbera for the replacement for the M3 GTR audio due to ether because the team ran out of time to record the M3. I wonder if what the car would sound if the recording team had enough time. 🤔
In NFS Carbon too, the exhaust sound is the same but it is added a new engine sound (from Jaguar XK) that NFS MW 2005 didn't have and only exhaust sounds.

GTR2 had sound shared with Ferrari 360, but tranny sound was specific (and also somehow unusable on other GTR2 cars) . In Race07 I think it is the engine sound of a GT3 BMW

That sound that you hear is from the transmission called "straight-cut gears." It is much different from Supercharger.
While the NFS is the most iconic version, IMO it isn't the most realistic sounding one. Especially after you hear the IRL sound
