    Chelsea, I think that is a great idea. Pilots can actually do a ton of work on their plane, but most pilots really don’t want to go down that route. It saves me tons of money and I know more about my airplane. I wish the FAA would expand the things a pilot can do. I do think it would be great if there was and ownership/maintenance module you could take with your VFR or IFR training. I would pay for a module like that, especially a make/model specific module. (SR22, please). It’s much better than piecing it together from UA-cam or MX manuals.

    I agree with you Chelsea, as an Air Force avionics technician I became a much better technician when I got my pilots license. And I believe all pilots should spend time learning maintenance.

    Working on my A&P right now. Would prefer to be in GA because of the community and the people you meet. Not much of that with the airlines anymore sadly.

    Excellent episode Dan, Christy, Josh and Chelsea. I agree whole heartedly about the editing of videos. I would also love to be an A&P, but I can't justify that amount of money and time while being the soul provider for my family. If I ever am lucky enough to own my own aircraft, I would gladly do what maintenance is permitted. I hope we as a community and industry can find a solution to the A&P shortage. Congratulations, Josh, for 80991 being on display at the Garmin booth. Everyone keep up the excellent work. Have a safe and wonderful time at OSH. Safe skies my friends 🇺🇸🛩️

    i know what you mean. the LSA side of things is having the same issue with LSRM etc as well so i'm contemplating going up north for a few weeks to do the LSRM course next year. Also, you might want to try and find Rachel from Rachels jewlery .. she has an awesome story to tell about how she started a business to pay for her bushcat which is right by the entrance to oshkosh... it's the bright pink one.

    I went to college for aircraft maintenance in Canada.... But I graduated just after 9/11; that combined with being poor at making connections with people and not being able to move out of my city, I couldn't find work. Now at 40, I'll have to not only retrain, but deal with a significant pay cut I wouldn't be able to sustain living on my own. Similar happened with my pilot license....I just can't break into aviation and have all but given up. Cost of entry is high which makes it hard for many to access

    Man, Chelsea made a damn good point about A&Ps buy and large being picked up by these Commercial level entities rather than going down to GA maintenance. I saw this a lot in my time as a helicopter mechanic in the military. Guys and Gals would get out, get their A&P, and then run to Bell, Sikorsky, Lockheed, Boeing, what have you where they knew they would make some damn good money as a subject matter expert. That's not the path I took, I got out and went to work for a local shop that works an exclusively GA fleet. It is rough and it can feel really shitty at times, and it certainly isn't where an A&P is going to make the big bucks, but this is the root of all aviation. Without these GA Jacks of all Frames, I feel that not only GA but aviation as a whole is going to suffer because of it.

    A lot of high schools have STEM aviation programs. More need to add Aviation Maintenance programs to their local or county Vocational/Technical schools. Schools of Westfield MA did it and there is one in Farmingdale NY. These schools are graduating students that are ready to take their general and airframe test and then they finish up their power plant locally. We need to add more mechanics to the industry and Highschool is the place to get it started. The kids love it! My daughter is in the Westfield MA program.

    Well I was just in Duluth/ Superior/ WI where it was 75 degrees!! Which I could have come that way.. Maybe there will be an Oshkosh in Wichita one day the heart of Avaition.. Or better yet, Taking Off sponsor a new "Fun under the clouds - Wichita"
    Wow - Josh really added to the humor!! I wish his videos were more this type of talk over the narration.
    A relative if mine is a mechanic for SW.. Close to retiring - I'm betting he will retire and go into GA as he does already some moonlighting but in a cooler climate.

    I was chatting with my A&P a few years ago and he was telling me about getting his lawn mower fixed because he didn’t have time to deal with it and the mower repairman charged more per hour than he did. I can’t imagine all that training and especially the liability then make less than a mower repairman.

    With the MOSAIC changes many more GA aircraft may fall into Light Sport, enabling the LS Repairman changes to allow lower time mechanics to do GA repairs. Thoughts?

    • @oneninerniner3427
      @oneninerniner3427 Рік тому

      Hmm, not if it's a certified aircraft I believe. Light sport or not it's still a certified aircraft, right? I mean so an a & p still needs to sign off on it, correct? It would need to be changed to experimental category as I understood it?

    Speaking of the GA maintenance crisis, I heard Jack Pelton talking about the recent MOSAIC NPRM. The one thing he said that he would like to see added to it is the ability for owners of eligible certified aircraft to trade in their standard airworthiness certificates for a special Light Sport certificate. This would allow Light Sport Repairmen to work on the airplanes. Right now a Light Sport Repairman certificate takes about 3 weeks.
