I don't hear half swing in western music so this was hard to understand, until I heard African music. There it is very prominent, and kind of magical how it comes together. Some musicians play in triplets, some play straight, some in between and they all meet on the downbeat, it gives a flowing sense to the rhythm.

What an awesome lesson! Thanks Stephen. Stevie's current drummer, Stanley, did an amazing hour long Drumeo appearance and then did a mini-lesson breaking down 'Superstition' - both are available on youtube.

So like the swing knob on Caustic, you can set it anwhere in between. Thanks for the tips. Mostly I'm guitar and piano. With drums, I've dabbled all my life but finally focusing. Your channel helps a lot. 👍

Misery Signals - Controller album is full of these feels.
Not exactly 'dancy' but a good example of more fluent, less rigid playing when in alternate time signatures

Hey Stephen, thank you! Nice video of a more advanced topic, I like the Logic examples to illustrate what straight, swung and in between can look like. Whilst working on complete lock-in with my limbs, I’ve also started added these swung and half-swung notes, mostly for blues songs. But recently I thought to try them on some rock songs too, exactly for the reason that I want more people to dance. :-) I also like the Dilla style stuff ie other time stretching displacements of mostly the hi hat whilst keeping kick and snare straight - of course only if someone else in the band also does this otherwise it just sounds weird.

Interesting examination of the degrees of swing-feel using a computer (none of which actually sounded right to me though!). On Tuesday (first gig for years) I had to play Jerry Butler's Thank You Early Bird and Aaron Neville's The Greatest Love. Not my favourites necessarily but good and differing examples.

    Interesting nuances.
When listening to the 10 or so mp3 tracks you linked, I thought there must be an error in the uploads-- except for the tempo changes, they seemed to all sound exactly the same. Likely my ears at fault, the hat subtleties are pretty much indiscernable.
But after watching n listening to the whole lesson, it all came together.
    Thank you👍

I was just blessed with a Ludwig drum set base 2 times on top floor Tom snare.
No symbols, no hat. Have a seat, everything is PDP.

Well done, Stephen. These things don’t get enough attention. ‚I wish‘ by Stevie Wonder is a very good shout, I had a lot of fun covering that one a while ago. The hihat pattern feels almost straight to me too. Almost, but not completely ;)

Two other examples come to mind: “What’Chu Gonna Do When She Says Goodbye” by Pablo Cruz, and “Sowing the Seeds of Love” by Tears For Fears.

I hear drum notes/beats “phonetically” as in there is an actual sentence being spoke as I play….This has helped when trying to explain a certain feel or drum fill without being able to do proper notation etc….
“Blappitz da bresh beppy” or “focks da flock flocka” 😛
